This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

“BACHELOR MOTHER”-39 was a popular Hollywood film directed by Garson Kanim, with Ginger Rogers and David Niven in the lead. It was the story of a single girl, who finds an abandoned child and raises it. She is stamped as unwed mother and many hilarious situations are created with her lover.

This film was copied by Kishore Sahu, who produced and directed it under the banner of Acharya Art Productions. He was the Hero and the Heroine was Pratima Dasgupta. The film was ” Kunwara Baap “-42. The theme was reversed here and the rich bachelor boy finds a child left in his car. Not finding its parents he decides to keep the child, which causes misunderstandings with his lover etc etc.

The noted Hindi Novelist Amritlal Nagar (famous for his novels-Boond aur Sagar and Shatranj ke Mohre etc) wrote the dialogues and lyrics of this film. He also acted in the film. Nagar had earlier written for films Sangam-41 and Kisi se na kehna-42. Later he also wrote for Raja-43.

This film had become very popular.

Later on many films in many languages were made on this theme. Even Hollywood made a remake called ” Bundle of Joy-56″ with Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Murphy in the lead.

In Madras the AVM supremo saw these two films and decided to make a Tamil film ” VAZHKAI “.

He got his cast ready except the Heroine. He wanted a fresh face, preferably a debutant. Anyway, a young Telugu actress PANDHARI BAI was selected, but it was found that she could not speak Tamil fluently.

M V Raman, AVM’s Director suggested a name of a young Dancer, who was the daughter of actress Vasundhara Devi and M D Ramaswami- VYJAYANTIMALA.

She was called and a contract for 3 years was signed with her.

When VAZHKAI was being made AVM supremo saw an Hindi film Khidki-1942 with C Ramchandra’s music. He liked it so much that as many as three songs from Khidki were copied and used in VAZHKAI by Sudarshanam, the music director.

VAZHKAI was released in 1949 and it was a super duper hit. AVM made a Telugu Remake- JEEVITHAM-50. This too was a Hit.

Then AVM decided it was time to invade the Hindi films and a film called BAHAR was made in 1951 with Vyjayantimala and Karan Dewan. he was considered a lucky star in those days. This film also became a hit.

Encouraged by the success in three languages one after another, AVM made yet another film LADKI in 1953, as a remake of Tamil and Telugu films. All these were also Hit.

By this time Vyjyanti Mala’s contract with AVM was over and she became a freelancer. Her maternal Grand Mother Yaduguri Devi handled V Mala’s affairs now.

BAHAR-1951 was AVM film from Madras. Directed by M V Raman and music by S D Burman, the songs were written by Rajindra Krishan- a southern favourite.

The cast was Karan Dewan, Vyjayantimala ,Pran, Omprakash, Padmini, Lalitha,Narmada Shanker etc.

There were 9 songs in this film. 8 songs afrom this movie have already been already posted. today we will see the last remaining song from the movie.

Bahar is the story of a beautiful girl Lata (Vyjyanti Mala), who is a very modern and educated girl. She is constantly pursued by the Villain-Shekhar (Pran). Shekhar has run away from his village where he has duped an innocent girl after making her pregnant. The simple Village girl Malati (Padmini) comes in search of her lover as she has delivered his child. Not finding him, she leaves this child in the house of Kumar (Karan Dewan) a successful, rich bachelor boy, who is in love with Lata.

Kumar is surprised to see the child. He searches for its parents and not finding anyone, decides to raise the child himself. Seeing her lover Kumar playing with a child in his house, Lata misunderstands him and there is a fight.

In the end all misunderstandings are clarified, Lata and Kumar unite and even Shekhar repents and accepts the child and also Malati for a happy ending.

All the 9 songs of this film were very popular, but the most popular was a 2 version song of Kishore and Shamshad- Huzur aapka, kasoor aapka, mera naam lijiye na mere baap ka.

Here is this nice dance song from “Bahaar” (1951) which is sung by Shamshad Begam and the dance is performed by Vyjyanti Mala.
