Greetings and best wishes to all, for the festival of Baisakhi today.

Today’s celebrations are happening across the country, called by different names and have different cultural legends behind them. But for all, this is the celebration, or let’s say, another celebration of a new year cycle. Today is the Sankrant (or the first day) of the month of Vaishaakh as per the calculations of the solar calendar. On the Gregorian (or the Western) Calendar, this day falls on the 13th of April. Once after every 36 years, it will fall on the 14th April (to make an adjustment for the minute variations in the cycles of revolution of earth around the Sun).

The origins of this festival are steeped in antiquity of our culture and history. But the interesting thing is that one finds this festival being celebrated across the country, albeit with different names. In Bengal and in Tripura, it is called ‘Naba Barsha’ and alternatively ‘Pohelo Boishakh’. In Assam, it is called ‘Rongali Bihu’. In Kerala it called ‘Vishu’. In Kashmir, it is celebrated as ‘Navreh’, the new year day. In Orrisa (Odisha) it is celebrated as Pana Sankranti or Maha Vishnu Sankranti. It is celebrated as ‘Bikhauti’ in the hill areas of Uttrakhand. And in Sri Lanka, this is celebrated as ‘Aluth Avurudda’, the new year day.

For the Sikhs and Punjabis, this is a major festival, although as per the Sikh Nanakshahi Calendar, today is not the beginning of the new year for them. (The new year as per the Sikh Nanakshahi Calendar falls on the Sankrant (or the first day) of the month of Chaitra (Chet), which falls on March 13th). In north India this day is very significant for many reasons.

In 1567, Guru Amar Das ji, the third Guru in the Sikh tradition, institutionalized today’s day as a special day for all the congregation to gather and receive the blessings of the Guru. So in that sense, this day is very important in Sikh tradition for honoring the Guru. And then, later in the year 1699, Guru Gobind Singh ji, the tenth Guru in the Sikh tradition, chose this day to be the auspicious foundation of the Khalsa Panth. (You can read more details about this in the write up for the song “Mittar Pyaare Nu” .

This day is also very important for the Arya Samaj followers. It was on this day in 1875, that Swami Dayanand Saraswati ji laid the foundations of the Arya Samaj.

And one more very significant event is attached to this day from Buddhist history. The ascetic Sidhartha, attained Enlightenment after 49 days of meditation under the renowned Bodhi Tree (in Bodh Gaya), on this day.

From a rural perspective, it is the celebration of the completion of harvest season for the farmers. And this day is celebrated as a thanksgiving to God, for having once again provided a rich harvest of wheat, which is the primary crop that is harvested at this time of the year.

Most celebrations for this day across the country are very colorful. People wear new clothes, and special dishes will be prepared. In Kerala, the families, especially the children will prepare interesting displays called ‘Vishu Kaani’, of flowers, grains, fruits, cloth, money and precious jewel, and view it in the early morning, as a blessings of happiness and prosperity for the upcoming new year. In all parts of the country, the festival is accompanied with music and dance.

And in Punjab, this special festival is one of the most colorful, and full of fun and music and dancing. The traditional call for this festival in Punjab is “aa vey jatta, aayee vaisaakhi” – ‘come my friends, the festival of Baisaakhi is here’. (‘jatt’ is a word for a Punjabi male person). This day is a day reserved for ‘bhangra’ and ‘gidda’, the traditional dances of Punjab. Across the land, in every town and village, there are such dance celebrations being held today.

There are some songs for this festival in Hindi films also. As I was preparing the write up on Kedar Sharma which was posted )here yesterday, I came across this wonderful song from the 1947 film ‘Duniya Ek Saraai’. I was familiar with this song from the Geet Kosh browsing, but it was only yesterday that I located the audio of this song and listened to it for the first time. And since then, I have heard it over and over so many times. A song that blends in the bhangra music of Punjab, and on screen I am sure it must have been accompanied by a dance performance.

And the other special thing about this song is that the primary singing voice is of Mohammed Hussain Farooqui. A voice that was endorsed by KL Saigal Sb himself. Mohammed Farooqui, talented singer from Jhunjhunu Rajasthan, stayed in the industry all of four years, and recorded songs for maybe just over a dozen films, from 1947 to 1950. In 1950, he returned to his native place, on account of the deteriorating health of his father, and then never returned to Bombay. He spent the rest of his life as a mission to help the poor. He passed away in 1990.

The 1947 film ‘Duniya Ek Saraai’ is produced under the banner of Ranjeet Movietone. The cast of actors in this film include Jagirdaar, Begum Para, Altaf, Rajendra, Meena Kumari, Shanta Kumari, Nazeerbai, Kesar Bai, Pt Iqbal and Kuma (Jr.) etc. The film is directed by Kedar Sharma, who has also written all the nine song in this film. The music compositions are by HansRaj Behl, and as this song shows – a music that is heavily influenced by the music of Punjab.

Enjoy is this wonderful bhangra song, relish the beat and the pace of it, as it goes from normal to fast to very fast, then suddenly dropping back to normal. And envision the turbaned young men, dancing to this rhythm.

“Aa Ve Jatta, Aayee Vaisaakhi”.
