Daya kar hey girdhar gopal

Posted on: May 5, 2013

Today (5 may 2013) is the seventh death anniversary of Naushad (25 december 1919- 5 may 2006). He was one of the earliest pioneers of Hindi movie music who helped shape the destiny of Hindi movie music and determined the course that this new music form would take.

In the earlier days of Hindi movie music, ordinary people did not feel any attachment with the Hindi movie music because that music was mostly based on classical music. It was in 1940s that first Ghulam Haider and then Naushad began to composed music based on folk music. Ghulam Haider’s composed Punjabi folk music based songs “Khazanchi”(1941) and “Khandaan”(1942) that took the Hindi music world by storm. soon thereafter, Naushad composed music based on the fusic music of UP. His movie “Ratan”(1944) turned out to be a definitive movie in this regard as it paved the way of folk music based movie music in a big way. Other music directors too realised that the route to winning over the common men’s heart musically was through folk music rather than through classical music, and the rest was history.

It is not that Naushad and others regarded their music as mutually exclusive from classical music. On the other hand, most songs composed had the foundation of classical songs underneath them. In fact most Hinsi movie songs can be described as semi classical songs.

On occasions when situation so demanded, Naushad would reach out and request classical music ustaads to sing for his songs as well. He got Ustad Amir Khan and D V Paluskar to sing in “Baiju Bawra” (1952) and Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan in Mughal-e-Azam (1960). Listening to these songs sung by doyens of Hindustani classical music is a pleasure for common music lovers because this may perhaps be the only time they are likely to exposed to these masters.

On the occasion of the seventh death anniversary of Naushad, here is a song sung by Ustad Amir Khan. This song is from “Shabaab” (1954). The song is written by Shakeel Badayuni.

Only the audio of this song is available and so it is difficult to say how and on whom this song is picturised. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.
PS-The video of the song is also available and I have provided this link as well. It is seen that the song gets played in the background as titles appear on the screen in the beginning of the movie.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

Let me also join you in paying my respects to Naushad on his 7th death anniversary. Hearing this rare Bhajan after a long time. Thank you.

This song based on Raag Multani was the title song of this movie. This song was not picturised on anybody in particular. In the background we could see a bearded singer, plucking on the strings of his Tanpura, rendering this song. After this the movie starts with maid informing the king about the birth of Raaj Kumari.
