“Namastey London” (2007) is a 19 year old film produced and directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. It starred Rishi Kapoor, Nina Wadia, Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Upen Patel, Javed Sheikh and Clive Standen. Riteish Deshmukh had a cameo appearance. It had music by Himesh Reshammiya and lyrics were by Javed Akhtar. The songs were in the voices of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Krishna Beuraa, Sunidhi Chauhan, Zubeen Garg, Akriti Kakkar, Alisha Chinai, Jayesh Gandhi & Himesh Reshmmiya.
The list of playback singers for the movie has a name – RDB. I learnt (as I sat to write this post) that RDB stands for Rhythm, Dhol, Bass.
RDB is a band, initially formed in 1997, by three British Indian brothers Kuldeep, Surjeet, and Manjeet Singh Pal. The band’s style blends western genres with traditional Punjabi beats and vocals. They specialise in Bhangra, Hip-Hop and Bollywood genres. After the death of the oldest brother Kuldeep & Manjeet branching off to start a solo career, RDB has continued with Surjeet. They essentially have their origin in Bradford, Yorkshire England.
Zubeen Garg is another name on the list of playback singers about whom I googled.
Zubeen was born on 18 November 1972, into an Assamese Brahmin family in Tura, Meghalaya. His father was a magistrate, and is also known as a lyricist and poet under the pen name Kapil Thakur. Zubeen started to sing from the age of three. His first guru was his mother from whom he learnt to sing and he learnt playing the tabla from Pandit Robin Banerjee for 11 years. Guru Ramani Rai introduced him to Assamese folk music. Garg had been composing songs since his school days. He began singing for Hindi films sometime in mid-1990s. His biggest breakthrough in Bollywood came in the movie ‘Gangster’ where he sang the song “Ya Ali”. The song won him the best playback singer Global Indian Film Awards (GIFA) in 2006. I found it interesting that his first name was chosen in homage to Zubin Mehta, the Indian conductor of Western Classical music & Philharmonic Orchestras. His given last name was initially “Borthakur” but later instead of continuing with it, he chose “Garg”, the title of his Brahmin gotra. On 19 September 2025, Garg died in Singapore, at the age of 52. He died while swimming in a sea without a life jacket, off the coast of Saint John’s Island.
There is one more singer in the list of playback singers- Jayesh Gandhi.
Google Gemini tells me that he is a vocalist, lead guitarist best known for his works in Indian rock & Hindi playback singing. He worked extensively as a primary music assistant to Himesh Reshmmiya. His popular Hindi film songs (that I have heard are) title track of ‘Apne’, ‘Just Chill’ from ‘Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya’, ‘Ishq ki gali’ from ‘Milenge Milenge”.
Krishna Beuraa is another new name (for me) in the list of playback singers. He is basically from Cuttack Odisha and has sung in many Indian language films. He is known for his hit songs “Maula Mere” from the film ‘Chak De! India’, “Main Jahan Rahoon” from the film ‘Namastey London’, “Rabba” (Musafir) and “Soniyo from the Heart” (Raaz-2). He can sing in 22 languages including his mother tongue Odia.
“Namastey London” was a film that followed the time tested formula of ‘Indian culture best Western culture evil’. There is a dialogue in the film between Rishi Kapoor and Akshay Kumar, which has Akshay questioning the mentality of the expatriate Indians, of wanting the best western education for their children; western lifestyles for the families. But when it comes to looking for a bride or groom it always has to be someone from their country, caste, community etc.
The film doesn’t openly claim to be inspired by Manoj Kumar’s ‘Purab Aur Paschim’ though there were a lot of similarities between the two films. We had Katrina Kaif playing Jazz (Jasmeet) who is born & brought up in London to Rishi Kapoor (Manmohan Malhotra) & Nina Wadia (Bebo Malhotra). Jazz is friendly with a Pakistani cab driver’s son Imran (Upen Patel). He advises Jazz that she can circumvent an unwanted marriage in India by just going ahead with the rituals but not registering the marriage in India, that type of unregistered marriage is not valid in London. So, once she decides to get married to her English boyfriend (Clive Standen) she just needs to go about the wedding formalities as accepted by British Laws.
Jazz successfully cons her father into believing that she has agreed to marry his friends’ son Arjun Singh (Akshay Kumar). She insists that the marriage should be registered in London. This has Arjun Singh traveling to UK with Manmohan & family. On landing in London, Jazz breaks the secret that she is going ahead & marrying Clive. The rest of the film shows us how Arjun Singh copes with the situation and the film ends with Jazz realizing that she has fallen in love with her Indian husband & runs away with him from the church at the time of her wedding to Clive.

Today we are having one more song from the film on the occasion of Akshay Kumar’s birthday. He turns 59. He was born Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia to a father who was in the Indian Army. He lived & grew up in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk. The family later moved to Mumbai, where Akshay completed his education. He had his training in Martial Arts in Thailand and on returning to Mumbai started training and coaching youngsters. His journey to filmdom was through modelling, working as a background dancer and in uncredited roles as in ‘Aaj’ a Mahesh Bhatt film. He is known for executing his on stunts in action scenes. He is also good in emotional & comedy scenes, without making them look like overacting. He has acted in many multi-starrer films where Paresh Rawal, Suniel Shetty, Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Bobby Deol, Shahrukh Khan, Govinda, Vinod Khanna, Sharughan Sinha etc etc have been his co-actors. He is a two-time National award winner in the best actor category. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009.
The trigger for me choosing a song from “Namastey London’ is my daughter. I asked her for a song for today, and promptly she reminded me that I like the songs from this film. The second trigger for choosing this particular film is that my daughter has recently shifted to London for further studies. Hence I am choosing a song that shows the sights and locales of England & London in particular.
