The tapestry of the fables of love is never compete without the legendary saga of the flame and the moth – much better represented in the Urdu zubaan as Shama aur Parwaana. Somehow, the English equivalents of some of the more profound words and concepts in Hindi and Urdu, simply do not carry the same weight and substance. The English equivalents are a poor excuse to express that which is alien to that language. Shama and Parwaana are an example of such translation dilemmas. There seems to be no adequately authoritative word in the English language to convey the same sentiments in totality.
Anyways, let us keep the translation issues aside for this song. Continuing with the series of discovering Mukesh, and charting the course of his career in the early years. ‘Pardesi Mehmaan’ is a film from 1948. Produced under the famous Ranjit Movietone banner, the film is directed by Aspi. The film has eleven songs, all written by Pt Indra, and the music comes from the mind of Hansraj Behl. The list of actors includes Husn Banu, Kamal Kapoor, Rajrani, Ghulam Mohammad, Sheikh Hasan, Afgan Sandow, Abdul Rehman, Azeem, Bipin Gupta, Kaizer.
Now this song has a claim to fame, in terms of a rare and unique combination of singers. It is a duet of the voices of Husn Banu and Mukesh. And from all the search that I could make in the Geet Kosh and the Mukesh Geet Kosh, this appears to be the only duet of these two singers.
The verses of this song talk about a back and forth conversation between the Shama and the Parwaana, with both trying to impress the other to learn –from the other. To learn what it is about the truth of love, and the true spirit of burning in love. The discernment of this relationship between the Shama and the Parwaana has consumed many a poets and philosophers over centuries since the human mind started to perceive the concept of love, and the concept of being consumed by its fires. The symbolism of love that is represented by this pair of lovers, has been written about, again and again, in so many forms and with so many interpretations, and still the mind of the poet does not rest. The poetry of the sub continent and of the middle eastern cultures abounds with poems and tales about the love of these two.
In this particular song, both the Shama and the Parwaana are trying to challenge the other, with the profundity of their own perception and vision of love. Listen to this beautiful piece of poetry that has been strung together with the rhythm and notes with a fairly fast pace. One can make out the influence of the Punjabi folk as the melody plays out. And be it so, for Hansraj Behl’s music is verily influenced by his roots in Punjab.
Listen and enjoy, this rare and unique combination of voices, the only one such duet in the annals of Hindi film music.
