Continuing with Lata Mangeshkar songs, I found another song from an all time classic music score. This time it is the lone song remaining to be posted from the musical block buster ‘Shree 420′ (1955).
I was looking for a song composed by Shankar Jaikishan from the 50’s to post because IMHO the 50’s music of Shankar-Jaikishan was a lot better qualitatively and also had more variety than the 60’s. They had a lot more competetion during the 50’s, and were still keen on achieving the top slot as composers. And Lata Mangeshkar was their main female singer through 50’s. I thought I should find an outstanding song of Lata Mangeshkar. Looking in the list of songs moviewise, I came across ‘Shree 420′ surprisingly not in red. Even than I was not expecting that only one song will be remaining and that also a Lata song with chorus. So I found a song with the fifties flavour and with all the hallmarks of a Shankar-Jaikishan song. And a fresh one at that, because this is an unheard song for me.
As in the case of “Paying Guest’ song, this song also appears to be a song removed from the movie going by the description given with the youtube link. Only audio link is available and there is no way of corroborating this information, as I do not have access to HFGK. The lyricist is Shailendra.
There are only eight songs in this film, including a riddle song, a rainy romantic song, a group folksy song, a solo folk song, a chaplinesque song, a sad song and a vampish club song. Not lacking in variety at all. It is said that Shankar-Jaikishan kept their best tunes and compositions for R.K. Films. There may be some truth in this, and also that there are hundreds of unused song compositions/tunes composed by the duo, which are in possession of R. K. Films still.
All said and done, if I were among the living in 1955, had seen this movie and someone gave me a choice of taking home any one song in this melodious score of ‘Shree 420’, I would have chosen, this one .

Wonder, How I missed this beautiful song as I do not recollect its sequence in the film seen decades ago nor do I remember having heard it too often. Be that as it may, I have immensely liked it.

Thank you very much for posting this rare song.
Though I had heard it I earlier, I do not remember when did I listen to it last.
I entirely agree with your statement.
IMHO, the best period of Hindi Film music was the decade of 50s.
All the topmost music directors, Anil Da, Sachin Da, C. Ramchandra, SJ, Roshan, Madan Mohan, OP Nayyar, Vasant Desai, Chitragupta, SN Tripathi, Hemant Kumar, Khayyam & Jaidev, to name just a few, were at their peak creativity, and of course, they had all the best singers available to them: Lata, Rafi, Talat, Geeta, Mukesh, Asha, Kishore, Manna Dey, Hemant Da, Shamshad Begum, etc.
Indeed what an assembly! It was the Golden Age of Melody in Hindi films. Period!
BTW, I didn’t get the connection of the song with ‘ Paying Guest’.

The article is written by nahm. She is referring to the last song in this series, which was from “Paying Guest”. That song, as well as the song under discussion were songs excluded from their respective movies.

If you are watchful you will observe that background scores of RK movies composed by SJ had tunes which were used for songs of RK films in near future. eg I distinctly remember jaane kaha gaye wo din tune in maybe Jis Desh….or earlier films. There are many such examples

The tunes that played in the background music of R. K. films were used in songs of future films. I am aware of this , as we saw the older films already familiar with the hits songs of the newer films. I have not seen ‘Barsaat’, but ‘chori chori’ ‘Shri 420’ ‘Awaara’ had such background tunes.

With due respect, songs onwards 70s are available on 937 Radio & TV channels. (or even more)
Please let us, (may be a minority,) enjoy few blogs that cater to old and really sweet and sensible songs.
