As per IMDb site, the earliest film with the title ‘Laila Majnu’ was released in 1922 followed by another film with the same title in 1927. After the advent of talkies, ‘Laila Majnu’ was released in 1931 (I & II), 1945, 1953 and 1976. There were films with the title ‘Laila Majnu’ made in Telugu and Malayalam as well which were released in 1949 and 1962 respectively. Today I am presenting a song in the qawwali format from the film LAILA MAJNU (1945). An abridged version of the film with lots of cuts is available on YT.
‘Laila Majnu’(1945) was produced under the banner of Hind Pictures and directed by Nazir and Nayyar. The star cast included Nazir, Swarnlata, Khalil, K N Singh, Gope, Anita Sharma, Rajarani, Maqbool etc. There were 11 songs in the film penned by Tanveer Naqvi and set to music by Rafique Ghazanvi and Pt. Gobindram. The song I am presenting here has a very familiar starting line ‘tera jalwa jisne dekha’ sung by S D Batish, Mohammed Rafi and chorus. The song was set to music by Gobindram. I guess that S D Batish is giving playback for two actors whom I am not able to recognise.
The highlight of this song is that a bearded Rafi is seen singing for himself in this film. The second and the last time he sang on himself was a part of the song wo apni yaad dilaane ko in the film ‘Jugnu’ (1947).
The audio clip gives the full song while two partial video clips give part of the different stanzas of the song. But there is no change in lyrics.
With this song, ‘Laila Majnu’ (1945) makes its maiden appearance in the blog.
I am aware of three films that were released in 1945 which had songs in qawwali format – ‘Zeenat’, ‘Village Girl’ and ‘Laila Majnu’. The qawwali from ‘Zeenat’ is regarded as the first all female qawwali of Hindi films. I am not sure which was the first qawwali song in Hindi film.

Lyrics(on the basis of audio clip)
tera jalwa jisne dekha
tera jalwa jisne dekha
haan
tera jalwa jisne dekha
wo deewaana ho gaya
deewaana ho gaya
wo begaana ho gaya
haan deewaana ho gaya
wo begaana ho gaya
tera jalwa jisne dekha
tera jalwa jisne dekha
haan
tera jalwa jisne dekha
wo deewaana ho gaya
chala hoon aaj ye saugaat le
unki mehfil mein
jalan seene mein
ashq aankhon mein
khoon e aarzoo dil mein
aaa aaa aaa
wo parde hi mein rehte
aur mujhe deedaar ho jaata
agar hote meri aankhon ke parde
unke mehmil mein
yeh parda bhi uthh jata
aur koi dekh na paata
haan
yeh parda bhi uthh jaata
aur koi dekh na paata
kis mast nazar ne dekha
kis mast nazar ne dekha
haan
kis mast nazar ne dekha
main mastaana ho gaya
mastaana ho gaya
main begaana ho gaya
haan
mastaana ho gaya
main begaana ho gaya
tera jalwa jisne dekha
tera jalwa jisne dekha
haan
tera jalwa jisne dekha
wo deewaana ho gaya
nazar aankhon ko ab
uske siwaa kuchh bhi nahin aata
mujhe kya ho gaya hai
kaash koi mujhko samjhaata
meri aankhon mein ab to
ek hi tasweer phirti hai
meri aankhon mein ab to
ek hi tasweer phirti hai
tasawwur bas usi tasweer ko hai saamne laata
wo aise dil mein samaaye
meri sab duniya pe chhaaye
haan
wo aise dil mein samaaye
meri sab duniya pe chhaaye
aabaad meri nazron mein
aabaad meri nazron mein
haan
aabaad meri nazron mein
har veeraana ho gaya
veeraana ho gaya
main begaana ho gaya
haan
veeraana ho gaya
main begaana ho gaya
tera jalwa jisne dekha
tera jalwa jisne dekha
haan
tera jalwa jisne dekha
wo deewaana ho gaya

Apart from ‘Laila Majnu’ and ‘ Jugnu’ , Rafi Sahab is also seen singing for himself in this famous song from ‘ Shaheed ‘ (1948) . In the third part of the song at 6.00 onwards, he is flag bearer :
Nahm ji and Sadanand ji,
As far as I know, Rafi saab is seen in the songs of these films-
1. Laila majnu-45
2. Shahjehan-46
3. Jugnu-47
4. Samaj ko badal dalo-47 and
5. Shaheed-48

Sir,
Thanks for the above info. I knew about the first three songs. I had seen ‘shaheed ‘ a few days before this post came along. It seems the video of ‘Samaaj ko badal daalo ‘ song is not available.
