This is the 11th song in the series ” VINTAGE KISHORE “. It is from the film Hamari Shaan-51,. It is a duet of Kishore and Shamshad Begum. Lyricist is Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Music Director is Chitragupt.

” Gayi Raat, aayi Prabhat, hum Nidra se jaage”…The recording for this song was going on in the Recording room of Bombay Talkies. This was a song from Film ‘ Janmabhoomi ‘-1936, under the music direction of Saraswati Devi. The singer was the film’s Hero-Ashok kumar, and one of the voices in the Chorus was that of Kishore Kumar, his brother. This was a novel experience for Kishore.

ABHAS KUMAR KUNJILAL GANGOPADHYAYA aka Kishore Kumar was born on 4th August 1929 at Khandwa,MP. His love for singing and mimicry was known from childhood. His grasping power was enormous but he was a little haughty in nature.

Later he came to Bombay, stayed with brother Ashok kumar and used to visit Bombay Talkies at will, anytime. He had made up his mind to enter the film line and do something phenomenal. His brother, Ashok kumar, however not in this favour, so there was no encouragement from him.

Kishore wanted to become a singer, but circumstances and the industry forced him to become a Comedy Hero, who sang his own songs and occasionally give playback to Dev Anand, whenever Dada Burman desired. All this made him very melancholy about it. He always felt that lot of injustice was being perpetrated to him. Additionally, he faced some situations where he was not paid fully or in time. This made him insecure. He thought that if he behaved strangely, probably the industry will stop forcing him to act. All these sentiments and mixed feelings made him sour about his career, films and life.

This led to Kishore acting strangely and unusual that he became famous as a very stingy and eccentric person. When he stayed at Warden Road, he put a Board on his door- ” Beware of Kishore “. When a producer came to make him payments, after receiving the money, Kishore took his hand and bit him. Over and above this, he asked the shocked man if he has seen the Board put on the door ? On his Khandawa Bungalow, he had put a board- ” Mental Hospital ” ! He had given names to each tree in his Bungalow premises. He would talk to the Trees addressing them by names, for a long time.

His strange behaviour was not limited to only outsiders, he would do the same with his relatives and close friends too. here is what Preeti Ganguly, Ashok kumar’s daughter said about him in one interview-

” His eccentric ways weren’t just for outsiders. If others complained that they weren’t allowed past his gate, his behaviour was not any different with us. He’d do it with us too. There were times when he would himself invite our family over for lunch, we’d go up all the way to Juhu and end up waiting at the gate. There, right within our view, Kishore Kaka would ask his man to tell us he wasn’t in, if he wasn’t in the mood to receive us. Mummy would get irritated, then hand over what she had carried for him, and say to the man, “I’ve brought him some of his favourite food. The least he can do is eat it.” And we’d all have to return without getting past those doors.

We had a house in Bangalore, a huge sprawling one on an acre of land near the army establishment. It had always been drilled into our young minds that the land was once a burial ground. We went there for our holidays once. Amit must’ve been about 5 years old. While I was between three and four. The place was spooky, the atmosphere eerie – and we were very scared. So much so, that we would accompany each other to the bathroom too. And Kaka would insist on telling us a story – a ghost story, at the dead of night. He’d take us to a certain room from where you could see willow trees swaying outside in the wind. Kaka would insist that we sit with our back to the window and we’d obediently do that. Then he would point to a tree under which a Colonel had supposedly committed suicide and start narrating a spooky tale. That wasn’t all. He would deliberately provide eerie sound effects to go with that story: tan tan, thak thak thak. And he’d even jump at us suddenly. All this was most nerve-racking – Amit and I would literally be quaking with fear. If we turned our heads to look at the trees, he’d say,”Peechhe se haath aaya”, and then add “Colonel abhi nahi aayegaa, baad mein aayegaa.” Which made it worse. There was one particular story (one of the many cooked up by Kaka) called The Golden Hand, which was the worst. Whenever I heard that one, I wet my pants. Literally. (preeti Ganguly) ”
Pritish Nandy was his very good friend, but he was warned by Kishore that pritish will not….1) ask any money loan from kishore, 2) expect any food or meals from Kishore during his visit and 3) will not borrow his Horror film cassettes. (Kishore kumar and Pritish were both lovers of Horror films and Kishore had a very large collection of these film cassettes.)

Film Hamaari Shaan-1951 was a Deepak Pictures, Bombay presentation, produced by Nanabhai Bhatt, who was prolific in producing/directing film and producing children. He had directed more that 100 films, starting with Muqabala-1942 and he had 9 children-5 daughters and 4 sons, from one legal wife and from Shirin Mohammed Ali. Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt are her sons.

The film was directed by the elder brother of Nanabhai Bhatt- Balwant Bhatt. He was born at Porbandar,Gujarat 0n 13-1-1909. Balwant started his career by assisting Naval Gandhi in 1930-31 and then N.B.Vakil at Sagar Studios in 1932. He turned Director with the advent of Talkie films and joined Prakash Pictures with Actress-1934. His first film was Chalta purja-1932 and the last one was Nagin aur Sapera-1966. He directed 34 films, mostly stunt and C grade films. He directed some Gujarati films like Sansar Leela, Seth Sagsha, Diwadandi, Snehlata etc. He was the producer of Dillagi-1942, Gunehgar, Alif Laila etc. Diwadandi-1950 became famous for its song-” Taari aankhni afini”, sung by Dilip Dholakia with music by Ajit Merchant. His film Mordhwaj-52 was the Debut film for Music Director Narayan Dutt. Balwant Bhatt died on 7-2-1965,at Bombay.

Film Hamaari Shaan-51 had 8 songs which included 2 duets of Kishore kumar. One duet is already posted in this Blog. Here is the other duet-this is sung by Kishore kumar and Shamshad Begum. Lyricist is Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Music Director is Chitragupta.

So let us enjoy this song that expresses the feelings of a desi girl and a videshi boy who are in love. Chitragupta himself had composed another song of this genre some two decades later which went Jodi hamaari jamega kaise jaani(Aulaad)(1968).

Lyrics(Provided by Nitin Shah)

hey
aayi bahaar hai
ham bekaraar hain
kaisa museebat hai baap re
bulbul hai bolta
jiya hai dolta
aise mein kar le milaap re
baap re
aayi bahaar hai
ham bekaraar hain
kaisa museebat hai baap re
bulbul hai bolta
jiya hai dolta
aise mein kar le milaap re

dekho ji dekho
hamse na karna
angreji mein prem
na karna angreji mein prem
ham to nahin hain git pit git pit
karne waali mem
o git pit karne waali mem
bharat ki naari hoon
memo se pyari hoon
zulfen to meri naap re

baap re
bulbul hai bolta
jiya hai dolta
aise mein karle milaap re
aayi bahaar hai
ham bekaraar hain
kaisa museebat hai baap re

lambi lambi ye zulfen kataa ke
gore gaalon pe laali maaro
phir naazuk naazuk honthon se
haan pyaare pyaare tum pukaro
dil mera kho gaya
mujhko to ho gaya
teri mohabbat ka taap re
baap re
bulbul hai bolta
jiya hai dolta
aise mein kar le milaap re
aayi bahaar hai
ham bekaraar hain
kaisa museebat hai baap re

kyun aisi baaten karte ho saajan
jinse ham sharmaawen
ho saajan
jinse ham sharmaawen
dil ki dhak dhak badhti hi jaaye
naina jhuk jhuk jaayen
ho sajan
naina jhuk jhuk jaayen
hamko sataao na
jiya jalaao na
hamse hoga na ye paap re

baap re
bulbul hai bolta
jiya hai dolta
aise mein kar le milaap re
baap re

SJ was not very much for Kishore’s voice. Many a times he employed Manna Dey twice in Karodpati songs and Rafi couple of times.
As far as I remember Kishore sang sargam only once for payalwali dekna in Ek Raaz. I always wonder if he can yodel why can’t he sing sargam; may be short of riyaaz.
