‘Raeeszaada’ (1976) was produced by V L Khare and was directed by Raja Thakur, The cast included Vikram and Zarina Wahab in lead roles supported by Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Rakesh Roshan, Kunwar Ajit (Ajit Singh Deol), Bhushan Tiwari, Pratima Devi, Vijay Khare, Randhir, Mushtaq Merchant, Master Kiran, Helen, Baldev Khosa (guest appearance), Sanjana (guest appearance) etc. I do not remember to have heard this film though I was aware of ‘Raeeszaada’ (1990).

During the making of the film, director, Raja Thakur passed away. Desh Gautam stepped in to complete the film.

Rajaram Dattatreya Thakur, widely known in the film industry as Raja Thakur (23/11/1923 – 28/07/1975) was a well-respected producer, director and editor in Marathi films. He was born in Phonda in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra. Not much is known about his family background and the education.

Raja Thakur started his filmy career as assistant to Master Vinayak and later to Raja Paranjape. He debuted as director for Marathi film, ‘Bolavita Dhani’ (1953). He directed about 20 films in Marathi, 2 in Hindi and an English film, ‘Birbal My Brother’ (1973). His box office hit Marathi film, ‘Mumbai Cha Jaawai’ (1970) was made in Hindi as ‘Piya Ka Ghar’ (1972) by Basu Chatterjee. His first recognition as a director came when his film, ‘Mee Tulas Tujhya Angani (1955) won the President’s Silver Medal for the Best Feature Film in 2nd National Film Award. He followed it with his film, ‘Rangalya Ratree Ashya’ (1962) which won President’s Silver Medal for the best feature film at 10th National Film Award. His Marathi film, ‘Ektee’ (1968) won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi. He also won three consecutive Maharashtra State Film Awards for Best Film from 1970 to 1972. I had watched a few of his Marathi films in which he tackled the socially relevant issues with a touch of subtle comedy.

With ‘Zakhmee’ (1975) Raja Thakur made his entry as a director in Hindi film. This was followed by ‘Raeeszaada’ (1976). Unfortunately, he was not alive when both these Hindi films got released. He passed away on the day his first Hindi film, ‘Zakhmee’ (1975) was released.

Coming back to the film, ‘Raeeszaada’ (1976), the story of the film is as under:

Seth Shiv Narayan (Dr Shriram Lagoo) is a wealthy businessman who is at logger head with his only son, Rajesh (Vikram) because his son distastes his father’s one point programme of making more money and his oft repeated taunts that Rajesh’s identity is only because his father is a rich businessman. Rajesh wants to live his life on his own terms. He leaves his father’s house and takes shelter in Julie’s (Zarina Wahab) hut who had saved him from the goons of her locality. Julie runs an illicit liquor bar in her hut for survival which is located in a hutment dwellers’ colony known as Neecha Nagar. Rajesh now works for her.

Seth Shiv Narayan is over-confident that after few days, his son would return home after struggling for survival. But Rajesh does not turn up nor his whereabout is known to him. Through one of the taxi drivers, Kalicharan (Mushtaq Merchant), he learns that Rajesh is working in a liquor bar. It is very insulting for Seth Shiv Narayan. Kalicharan covertly arranges a meeting of Rajesh with his father who offers to send him to Paris for higher studies. Rajesh walks off after declining his father’s offer. To force Rajesh to return home, Seth Shiv Narayan arranges a police raid on Julie’s illicit liquor bar. Julie gets arrested and is imprisoned for 3 months. Rajesh knows who was behind this raid. He visits his father to tell him that he has severed all relations with him.

Rajesh is now left like an orphan who does not know how to manage his survival. Fortunately, his neighbours help him with food and works as a delivery man. Seth Shiv Narayan decides to take the entire hutment dweller’s Neecha Nagar land on lease which belongs to municipality for setting up a 5-star hotel. When the news goes to the hutments dwellers, the local corporator, Kishanchand (Baldev Khosa) assures the hutment dwellers that he would oppose the sale of land on lease. Seth Shiv Narayan tries to take Kishanchand to his side by offering a good amount to vote for the lease sale in the municipal corporation’s meeting but he declines by saying that as long as he is alive, he would fight on behalf of the hutment dwellers. After few days, Kishanchand is found murdered.

During the drive to collect funds from the hutment dwellers to fight the case against the lease sale of Neecha Nagar land, Rajesh becomes popular among them but none of them has any idea as to who he is because ever since he was found unconscious by Julie after a fight with goons, he has given the impression to all that he has lost his memories.

Three months have passed and Julie is released from the prison. When she returns to her hut she is pleasantly surprised that her hut has been renovated and now it has been converted into a beer bar by Rajesh. The local goon, Baasu (Bhushan Tiwari), who has been the regular visitor to Julie’s bar has an eye on her. He tries to create a rift between her and Rajesh by saying that he would desert her when he gets a better opportunity but his attempts fail.

The story takes a dramatic turn when Jitesh (Rakesh Roshan) from Kolkata visits Seth Shiv Narayan and introduces himself as his illegitimate son from his illicit relation with a woman while he was in Kolkata. His mother has passed away and she has revealed him about this illicit relation at the time of her death. He produces the proof by way of their old photos. Seth Shiv Prasad is happy that in the absence of his son Rajesh, he has now Jitesh who can take care of his business interest. He accepts Jitesh in his family and asks him to stay in his house but as his nephew. He gives him the assignment of clearing the hutment dwellers from Neecha Nagar.

Jitesh visits Neecha Nagar for the first time and meets the locals in Julie’s Beer Bar. With his frequent visits, he develops a good relationship with them including with Julie. A misunderstanding develops between Rajesh and Julie as he sees complete change in Julie’s behaviour after she has met Jitesh. Now he does not find any difference between his wealthy father and Julie as far as the attraction of money is concerned. It is at this stage, Jitesh reveals his identity as his step brother who has come to Mumbai to take a revenge against his father for neglecting his mother. Now all three are united in their efforts to save the Neecha Nagar.

When all attempts to clear the hutments from Neecha Nagar fail, Seth Shiv Narayan organises setting on fire of all the hutments through the local goon, Baasu. Jitesh assures the hutment dwellers that he would finance to reconstruct their houses. When nothing is working , Shiv Narayan decides to stand for the municipal election. The hutment dwellers of Neecha Nagar put Rajesh as their candidate against Seth Shiv Narayan. When his persuasion to withdraw from election with huge money offer fails, Seth Shiv Narayan once again entrust the job of kidnapping Julie so that Rajesh is forced to withdraw from the election. Both Rajesh and Jitesh warn their father that tomorrow at the election rally, he would get exposed.

At the election rally, Shiv Narayan is exposed by Jitesh when their true identity is revealed as the sons of Shiv Narayan. Rajesh also exposes his father that it was at the instance of his father that Kishanchand was murdered and Kalicharan went missing. It was his father who paid Baasu to set the hutments in Neecha Nagar on fire. After hearing these allegations, the crowd get very much agitated. They march to Seth Shiv Narayan’s house and he was about to be lynched when Rajesh reach the place on time and placates the crowd from lynching his father. Jitesh joins him after freeing Julie from the kidnapper and points out to his father that today Seth Shiv Narayan is saved because crowd identifies him as the father of Rajesh and not vice-a-versa. A police team arrives and arrests Seth Shiv Narayan on charge of murder of Corporator, Kishanchand.

The film had four songs written by Tajdar Taj which were set to music by Ravindra Jain. I present the first song, ‘jiskaa mann ho prem kaa darpan’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle who sings for Vikram and Zarina Wahab, respectively.

The context of the song is that after the release from the prison, Julie (Zarina Wahab) return to her hut which has been renovated by Rajesh (Vikram) to give her a surprise. However, one of her regular visitors to the liquor bar (Bhushan Tiwari) tries to create a rift between them by saying that Rajesh, now her boyfriend would desert her one day as she is not aware of his background. At this juncture, Rajesh comes and Julie asks him point blank whether he has any intention of deserting her. Rajesh replies that he has no intention of leaving her as long as he is alive. But jokingly, he says that if she wants to leave him than it is a different matter. At this juncture, their ‘nok-jhonk’ songs starts.
