Today’s song is from the movie ‘Five Rifles-1974’. I had presented a song from this movie on the blog long time back.

This is a special movie from my childhood days for people of my age group. I was just above six years old when this movie was released. I must have watched this movie with my parents or elders in the family.

The two things that stayed in my mind from this movie were monkeys with rifles and the iconic qawwaalee in the mesmerizing voice of Aziz Nazan. I also recall reading about this film that look-alikes of Rajesh Khanna and Shashi Kapoor were used in this film.

‘5 Rifles-1974’ (पांच रायफल) as the movies Censor Certificate mention it or (५ रायफलें’) as the movies titles mention it, was produced, directed and written by I.S. Johar. It was a Shanker B.C. presentation for Delux Productions (India).

In my earlier posts I had also mentioned this – (the movie has an ‘U’ certificate, still its online version requires a confirmation of age 😊 I don’t know why? anyway I had to watch only the title credits 😊 for information). I am not aware if this restriction still applies there.

The cast of this movie ‘Five Rifles-1974’ included Ambika Johar, Rakesh Khanna, Shahi Kapoor, Anil Johar, Kamal Kapoor, Veena, Sapru, Satyadip, Murad, Keti Irani, Keshto Mukherjee, I.S. Johar, Ravi, Ram Avtar, Chanda, Qamar Sarhadi, Nazeer Kashmiri, Kedar Sehgal, Bairam, Bali Jajani, Omi, and Master Anu. It was passed by Censor on 09.08.1974. Editing for this movie was done by M.S. Shinde. D.R. Thakkar and Faruk Kaiser were the associate directors of this movie. Darius Gotla was the Executive Producer of this movie, whereas Seeroo Daryanani was the associate producer.

This movie had six songs, including the famous qawwaalee which has been posted here. The qawwaalee was written by Nazaan Sholapuri while Aziz Nazaan was the composer and the singer. Out of the other five songs four were written by Rajendra Krishna and one by Indeevar. Music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

The movie titles under singers mention the name of Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar only.
HFGK Vol V mentions the following songs in the ‘list of songs of this movie’;

1) Wo kya cheez hai maharaj… duniya ke banaane waale ne (Kishore Kumar)
2) Pyaar ke patang ki dor jiske haath hai (Kishore Kumar, chorus)
3) Jab se sarkaar ne nashaabandi tod di (Kishore Kumar, chorus)
4) Teraa husn Allaah Allaah teraa roop Raam Raam (Kishore Kumar)
5) Malmal mein badan mora chamke (Asha Bhonsle)

For the ‘famous qawwaalee ‘jhoom baraabar jhoom sharaabi’ included in this movie Geet Kosh carries this note;

• One popular qawwaalee ‘Jhoom baraabar jhoom sharaabi (Singer-Composer: Aziz Nazan/Lyricist – Nazan Sholapuri) was picturized on Ambika Johar in the movie.

In his write-up presenting the above qawwaalee song Atul ji has already mentioned the following-

In reality, this qawwaalee was not created for this movie. This qawwaalee was created by Aziz Nazaan for his mushairas. He was the singer as well as the music director of this qawwaalee.

However, after going through details of this movie mentioned in HFGK Vol-V, I was curious to know where the credit for this qawwaalee have been mentioned in the titles of this movie. It appears under the ‘assistants’ section – for ‘music assistants’ – mentioning Babla as ‘assistant’ and Parte as ‘arranger’, Conducted by Frank Fernand, followed by the mention that ‘jhoom baraabar jhoom’ by ‘Courtesy the Gramophone Co. India Ltd and Aziz Nazan, lyrics Nazan Sholapuri’, Ironically the film today is recalled for this famous qawwaalee while its other songs have been relegated to obscurity.

This Qawwaalee was also the only song from this movie to make it to the Annual List of Binaca Geetmala. It was in 33rd position in 1974 and in 9th in 1975.

Today I am presenting the fourth song from this movie which is again in the voice of Kishore Kumar. On screen it is lip synced by Rakesh Khanna who is also trying to ape the mannerisms of the Late Superstar Rajesh Khanna. In the picturisation we also see the heroine (Ambika Johar, I hope I am correct), skiiing in snow clad mountains. There are many other skiirs who join in lip sycing in the chorus. In addition there are the customary mysterious people keeping close eye on the hero and heroine.

Let us now enjoy this song of seventies which is penned by Rajinder Krishan and composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.
