This article is the 9600th song post in the blog.

chanchal mann, kaahe dharke
ruk ja ruk ja
o zaraa tham jaa
tham jaa

Ah yes, one can sense the feeling. The grand milestone seems just around the corner and we have 9600 on the scoreboard today. And so I caution my heart to not be impatient. The rolling pace continues to be consistent, but somehow it seems that the 10 thousand mark is approaching at a faster velocity. Just another three century milestones away now. Just about 9 more weeks or so to go.

Welcome all readers and friends to the 9600th song on this blog. The musical bandwagon is taking on the appearance of a juggernaut. What with probably the most unique in form and content, and the single largest organized collection of Hindi film songs that is available anywhere on the net, this blog is slowly becoming a tour de force in the online music repositories. And with passage of time, I reckon, this blog will turn into a major reference site for the lovers of music, as well as for researchers and writers. The reason I say it is because of the exemplary amount of effort the entire team puts in to verify and validate the information before posting, as well as the level of coordination and exchange of information that happens between the team members thru comments and emails. With the powerhouse encyclopedia that we have in Arun ji on the team, the endeavor of the team is to ensure correctness of data. If there is doubt, then it is so stated, but rarely a post will carry an unconfirmed data claim that is erroneous. (Well, yes, it happens sometimes, but through team work, the correction is almost always made, and made quickly).

We all, as contributors know that there is a lot of hard work and effort that goes into building a write up. There is so much time that goes into locating songs and related materials, the writing of the post, transcribing the lyrics, sometimes translating them also – all of us who contribute the articles, know the effort. And then, beyond that, it is the work and effort that one single person puts in countless hours to review and verify songs, content, lyrics, the physically create the post on the blog, and then manually update all the tables. Day in and day out, this time consuming routine is followed.

And so, it is for good reason that we call this blog – “A Labour of Love”.

The century markers are a great stimulant. After having worked through ninety nine new additions, getting to the new 100th addition is time for celebration. It is like working the week, and then getting home on Friday evening (or Saturday, as the case may be), knowing that a good week’s worth of work is done, and now there is some time to relax. Aah yes, I know what you will say. The celebration part, the sigh of accomplishment on closing a week – the analogy works well to this point. But then, wake up the next morning, and Atul ji is already there with the next song. No time for a Sunday 😀 :D. And that is what is the consummate accomplishment of this blog – truly a blog of the internet age. Available 24×7, updated 24×7, communications and responses 24×7. No way any other web site or a similar effort will ever be able to hold a candle to this blog.

It is commendations to all on the team, and especially to Atul ji – Raanchiwaala Gaanewaala.

And so. Coming to the 9600th stop and the celebration to go along with. Ah yes, you know it. Another milestone coming up with the century marker. I am sure some of us do follow the artists’ scorecard on the Stats Page. There it is easy to keep track and know which artist is nearing a celebration write up.

Today, we are celebrating a multi century milestone, in fact the 1600th song of this peerless and most prolific diva of the Hindi film song – Asha Bhonsle. Asha ji breaches the 1600 songs marker today. With an active career that spans more than sixty five years now, and continuing to be active, she is the most likely candidate for top scorer with number of songs to her credit. But let’s leave that enumeration to time.

A career that started in 1948, it was really on a very slow track for the first few years and that is in comparison to the other lead singers of that era. When Asha ji made her debut in 1948, the shake up in the industry on account of the partition of the country had already happened. A new crop of young voices had already made their entry. When she sang her first song for Hindi films, the leading voices were those of her elder sister Lata, Geeta Roy and Shamshad Begum. For a number of years she was confined to B/C grade films. In the years from 1948 to 1955, the records show that she sang approximately 800 songs in Hindi films. The number does not sound too bad, but for the association to the grade of films and the lack of opportunity to make an impact. Of this period, many of her songs belonging to obscure films are unheard or untraceable.

Then in 1956 a change happened. Came the time for the film ‘Hum Sab Chor Hain’. Under the direction of OP Nayyar, the songs of this film made a splash and her popularity graph started to rise. The year 1957 brought the film ‘Naya Daur’, and the sound of “Uden Jab Jab Zulfen Teri” served as a catapult effect to the rising graph and then there was no looking back. The song and the popularity steadily rising.

She has in her repertoire an extra flavor that is not very well done with most other singers. Shamshad Begum maybe, but still, Asha ji’s rendering of the naughty and ‘chulbule’ songs is a class in itself. Her voice became the signature sound of the likes of Helen and Bela Bose, and now the popularity of songs transcended even the grade categorization. A little less than a decade after ‘Naya Daur’ came another eruption. The year is 1966, the music director is Pancham (RD Burman), and the director is Vijay Anand. The songs of ‘Teesri Manzil’ made such an impact that the echoes have been resounding for decades.

And yet, her career has such surprising twists and turns that actually leaves one breathless. After all the fantastic sounds of Helen’s cabarets, suddenly 1981 happens. And with it happen Khayyaam and ‘Umraao Jaan’. The rendering of Shaharyaar’s ghazals set a benchmark that for one, is of a most fabulous standard, and two, coming from Asha ji, left everyone surprised.

But then, she was not yet done. Fast forward to a decade and a half later. The melody is left far behind, even the thumping discos are history. The sounds are even more new and the music director is AR Rahman. The leading lady is Urmila Matondkar. Born in 1974, she is all of 21 years old when she played the lead role in this film. What took everybody’s breath away was the sound of “Ho Jaa Rangeela Re” – rendered by Asha ji, riding the strongest popularity waves at the age of 62. This must be a fantastic record that needs to be examined. (I think the closest we can get is her elder sister Lata ji, who was also active in that decade and sang for a completely fresh crop of leading ladies).

It is almost a phenomena – Asha ji and her singing across sixty five sweet and musical years. I had mentioned earlier about the 800 odd songs that she sang during the period from 1948 to 1955. My claim is that all those songs are worth exploring for. Maybe obscure and forgotten films, but the songs – they must be heard.

And so is the song for this post. A very obscure and forgotten film. But la la, what lovely songs and lovely rendering by Asha ji. The film is ‘Akela’ from 1963. So unknown that not a single song is available online yet. Music comes from the fingers of N Dutta, and the songs are written by Rajendra Krishan. The film has six songs. All of them sung by Asha ji. Obscure banner – Filmdom, with director’s name given simply as JB. The list of actors is well known though – Balraj Sahni, Sulochana, Lalita Pawar, Dhumal, Sadhana Chaudhary, Maruti, Daisy, Honey, Murad amongst others.

When Atul ji and I talked about this post and the milestone for Asha ji, I had suggested doing a song from this film. I had selected one song, but then I made a switch at the last moment, and am presenting a different song from the same film. The reason for that switch – well another post in very near future should clarify.

Regardless, a fabulous song that used to be heard quite a bit on the radio in the 1960s. As the song starts, the lead in music will give you the sudden flavor of the 1960s dance music. And with Asha ji’s voice picking up the words, it is such a delightful treat. It is gems like these that need to be revived in the memory of the listeners.

So a very happy 9600th to all friends, and a very auspicious 1600th for Asha ji. Both counters galloping along, and more to come from where we have been before. 🙂 Enjoy.

The song was very very famous.
Asha is unmatchable, unequalled, unrivalled, unparagoned, unparalleled and peerless. Asha’s 12,000 songs to Lata 7,000 says it all. The oft repeated refrain that Asha did not get good songs; she sang more of cabere variety, low budgeted films etc does not hold water. Assuming that 5000 songs to be scum she has still 7,000 songs as pure gems; a Lata-like figure. Mind you this achievement inspite of Lata discouraging her and other limiting factors. 12,00 itself make her better than Lata albeit slightly.
What to say about 9.6k. The Juggernaut trudges nay gallops on.
