30th march 2014 is the 14th death anniversary of prolific writer/lyricist Anand Bakshi. So I started on my research as to which songs I can send to Atul to post on this day. And I had actually zeroed in on a song for which there is a long standing demand from PCji in the farmaish section of ASAD. But I will not mention it here and save it up for a future occasion because I found another “Oh My God! What a rare find” song when I was shuffling through the pages of myswar.com.
Actually when I read the heading/title of the song I thought there must be some mistake by the uploader as according to me that particular song belonged to the 1981 movie ”Umrao Jaan”. Here I must admit that only during all this surfing of web sites I discovered that the said song was written by Amir Khusrow. So then I thought that Anand Bakshi must have written some version of it. But it turns out that what Bakshisaab has written is entirely different from the Khusrow one. Then before deciding to send it to Atul I did the last mandatory check to see if it was already there on ASAD. And what do I see? This title has appeared twice on ASAD and not once from the movie/s that I have mentioned….. The 1948 movie Heer Ranjha and the 1968 Nadirshah.
So now what to make of this particular line of thought that our writers have. All these songs highlight the same thought of a girl being given a send off after marriage. All the writers are male…. Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote for Nadirshah. Does that mean that the male writers actually care for the feelings of women? WOW! To that. But then if we see our filmdom, majority of our writers are male and the songs they write are all dedicated to the female of the species be it describing beauty, or agony of the ladies in question. What say? Lets say Hail! The Male of bollywood!!!!
So now coming back to the man in question. He was all of 26 when a song written by him was recorded for the 1958 movie “Bhala Adami”. And then there was a deluge. He worked with almost all the music directors of his time. The last movie in which his songs were there was the 2008 Ajay Devgan- Sunjay Dutt- Manisha Koirala starrer “Mehbooba” ; six years after his death. Isn’t that something to judge the person’s young –at heart outlook?
So this particular song is from the 1977 movie “Aadha Din Aadhi Raat” which had Vinod Khanna, Shabana Azmi, Asha Parekh, Prem Chopra, Keshto Mukherjee, Jala Agha etc. The story of this revenge movie is (mind it I haven’t seen the movie I picked up the synopsis from youtube which gave a link to the movie itself)—–
Gopal’s (Vinod Khanna) life is haunted by the tragedies of his past, in which his elder sister Sita and his younger brother Jagan were abducted by goons and his mother died of shock. He grows up under the wings of a poor yet humble, Kedar Miya, who wishes Gopal to become a doctor. While studying medicine, Gopal crosses paths with rich and arrogant, Radha (Shabana Azmi) and after several clashes Radha falls in love with Gopal. But plauged by his past and hellbent on revenge, Gopal has no place for love. He is in desperate search to locate the goons and find his family. Gopal encounters Gulshan (Prem Chopra), one of the abductors and from thereon begins a tale of sordid vengence.
The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle for the music of Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Lyrics
Aaa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
kaahe ko byaahi bides
kaahe ko byaahi bides re baabul
kaahe ko byaahi bides
aisi na thhi morey mayke ki galiyaan
aisi na thhi
aisi na thhi morey mayke ki galiyaan
jaisa piya ji ka des re baabul
kaahe ko byaahi bides
o o
kaahe ko byaahi bides re baabul
kaahe ko byaahi ee bides
pad gaye komal pairon mein chhaaley
o o
pad gaye komal pairon mein chhaaley
lag gaye honthhon pe chup ke taaley
laakhon aane jaane waale
ek ke haath
bheja na mere bhaiya ne sandes re baabul
kaahe ko byaahi bides
o o o
kaahe ko byaahi bides re baabul
kaahe ko byaahi bides
likh likh phhaadi kitni pattiyaan
o
likh likh phhaadi kitni pattiyaan
likh na paaun beeti batiyaan
chhote din aur lambi ratiyaan
yaad karoon saare mehle do mehle
laage jiya pe thhes re baabul
kaahe ko byaahi bides
o o
kaahe ko byaahi bides re baabul
kaahe ko byaahi bides
jeevan sapna nikla jhoothha
o jeevan sapna nikla jhoothha
mera man mujhse bhi roothha
mukh darshan(?) mein darpan toota
apna aap na pahchaaanoon
badla jeevan ne aisa bes re baabul
kaahe ko byaahi bides
kaahe ae ko byaahi bides re baabul
kaahe ko byaahi bides

Madam ji
Enjoyed every bit of your article and superb selection of song. I have written the lyrics of another Shabana Azmi(Asha) song from this movie (and waiting for the right occasion to send that one to Atul ji), Main bach gaya.
