The Many Colors of Love #14 – The Seasons of Love – Saawan
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

And so wrote the scribe. . .

rim jhim ke taraane le ke aayee barsaat
yaad aaye kisi se wo pehli mulaqaat

There is something about the season of rains that tickles the hearts in love. When the clouds of the thick black monsoon begin to appear on the horizon, there is many a thought that take a sigh of relief. The soil baking under the hot sun for weeks and months, takes in the cool winds carrying the promise of moisture with a pleasure that makes it smell so good. And when the drops of rain fall on the dry soil, its distinctive aroma floats and spreads the message of fragrant life that is about to be. The saplings of the seeds sitting just below the surface, feel the moisture seep into the soil around them, dampening their coats. And small moist particles slowly seep into their being, awakening the dormant life and slowly causing new plantlets to arise.

The plants and the trees, so far parched and dry, find new colors blossoming into their stems and leaves, and new life flow through their veins. The birds and the animals, lethargic so far with heat, find a new energy, and new songs to sing, as the cool showers descend from the heavens. The farmers’ hearts light up with pleasure, for now their sweaty exertions of the tilling and planting, are about to be blessed with life and growing fields.

With this wave of relief all around also comes a renewed vigor for love. As I said before, there is something about the season of rains that tickles the hearts in love. The sight of wafers white clouds, followed by thick blankets of dark grey – as they sweep in from the horizon, something happens to the young hearts. It is a delight that the heart is keen to just share with someone – someone whose thoughts alone are enough to tingle the strings of the heart. And then there follows the song – that which is the essential expression of joy and celebrations. The song beckons the partners in love, the hearts singing verses of longing to be close together, just listening to the pitter patter of the raindrops on the tree leaves, and watch the drops falling down and making puddles on the earth. And then the desire, to hold hands and just walk into the drizzle, feeling the pouring drops on the face and the skin, and getting drenched, as if in a waterfall of love. Ah yes, the rains is a season to be in love. There is new life, new vitality, cooling relief and everything that brings joy to the heart. And so the love and longings happen.

The songs of love in the season of rain are too numerous to be enumerated. I am sure each one of us has a few favorites, tucked away in the moist recesses of heart and memories. And we will hum them, alone or together, when the skies will open up and bless all creation with the elixir of life.

The song being introduced today is a lovely gem that will grasp your heart’s strings, as soon as you hear the voice of Shamshad croon the first line

nimbuwaa pe papihaa bola. .aa

And the feeling of sprightly joy and restlessness will animate your heart, for the duration it plays, and even beyond as you will want to continue hearing it and humming it. The words, the notes, the rhythms, the singing tones, the chorus – it is all a lovely conspiracy that the team of creators play on the mind and heart of the listener. Fabulously captivating.

The film is ‘Lakeeren’ from 1954, produced and directed by Harbans for Susheel Pictures, Bombay. The main cast of actors includes Ashok Kumar, Nalini Jaywant, Sulochana Chatterjee, Kamal, Pran, Tiwari, Durga Khote, Ameer Banu. The eleven songs of this film are written by Shewan Rizvi and the music – ah yes, the music is by Hafeez Khan. (Note: this is the music director Hafiz Khan, and not the singer-music director Hafiz Khan Mastana). The singing voices are those of Geeta Dutt and Shamshad Begum.

Such lovely and flowing melody that develops at a rapid pace. The song is an expression of expectations. As the clouds gather on the horizon, signaling the onset of the rainy season, so do the lemon and mango trees bloom with fruits. As the fruits will ripen, the birds will be feasting and singing from these trees. And the village belles tease each other – it is time for the beau to return home. It is traditional that during the rainy season, the men folk who travel far for search of trade and livelihood, will return to the village and spend time at home. The exchange between lady friends tells of new emotions that now tug at the heart. As the lines of the song say

main samjhi saawan aaya
dil bola jawaani aayee

I realize that the saawan is here
But the heart tells me
That the youth is flowering inside

The melody is simply marvelous. The burden of the song

dekh dekh chhaayee re badariyaa chhaayee
dekh chhaayee re badariyaa chhaayee

makes such a wonderful verse that you will continue to hum endlessly.

A charming and delightful song of love, as it blooms and prospers in the seasons of rain. I am sure you will want to play this melody again and
again. Enjoy.
