“Devdas” was a Bangla Novel written in 1917 by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. This novel proved out to be so popular that several movies have been made on this story in several languages in India ever since. Even Pakistan and Bangladesh have made one movie each on this topic recently.

The first movie made on this topic was “Devdas” (1927), which was a silent movie. The next movie was made in 1935 by New Theatres, Calcutta in Bangla as well as Hindi. This movie still remains the golden standard for all movies made on this topic.

The movie (Bangla as well as Hindi, and later Assamese) was directed by P C Barua. The Hindi version had K L Saigal playing Devdas, Jamuna Barua playing Paro while Chandramukhi was played by Rajkumari. The movie also had Biswanath Bhaduri, Krishna Chandra Dey, Vikram Kapoor, Kshetrabala, Leela, Nemo, Pahadi Sanyal, Kidar Nath Sharma, A. H. Shore, Sultana, Zubeida etc in it.
PS-Wikipedia mentions T R Rajkumari as the actress playing Chandramukhi, which does not sound right. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the identity of this Rajkumari.

Here is a song from “Devdas” (1935) that had not been discussed in the blog so far. This song is sung by Rajkumari (singer, and not the actress of this movie). Kidar Sharma is the lyricist. Music is composed by Timir Baran.

The song (the only female playback song in the movie) is picturised on Jamuna (I guess). I request our knowledgeable readers to confirm/ refute my identification.
PS-Now we know that the song was sung by Rajkumari Calcuttewaali for herself in the movie.

I have not been able to get the lyrics right at some places. I request our readers with keener ears to point out the correct/ missing words wherever applicable.

Song-Naahin aaye ghanshyam (Devdas)(1935) Singer-Rajkumari Calcuttewaali, Lyrics-Kidar Sharma, MD-Timir Baran

The voice in the song does not sound like that of Rajkumari Dubey. Probably, the actor and singer is Rajkumari Calcuttewali. This needs to be confirmed.

Right but everywhere it is mentioned Rajkumari

Yeah, she’s Rajkumari Calcuttewali.

Chandramukhi was played by Chandrabati Devi.
The main cast had Nirmal Banerjee, Manoranjan Bhattacharya, Dinesh Ranjan Das, Amar Mallick, Salian Paul, Prabhavati, KL Saigal as guest at Chandramukhi’s house, Ahi Sanyal
Versions: Devdas (1928), Devdas (1936), Devadas (1953), Devadasu, (1953), Devdas (1955), Devadasu (1974), Debdas (1979), Devdas (2002), Devdas (2002) and Dev.D (2009)

Chandrabati Devi played Chandramukhi in Bengali version. In Hindi version, role of Chandramukhi was played by Rajkumari. The question is which Rajkumari.

It is Rajkumari Calcuttewali positively. She did films only in calcutta and she was in this Devdas, doing Chandramukhi’s role.In Listener’s Bulletin 72,in an interview (Feb 1988),Rajkumari Banareswali has clarified that the Rajkumari working in NT films was Pullobai, also known as Rajkumari Calcuttewali.

Thanks for this information. Wikipedia is spreading the disinformation that T R Rajkumari of south played this role in this movie.

To my knowledge, except for Chandralekha-1948, T R Raajkumari of south hardly ever worked in Hindi films.

Atul ji,
I think the suitable words to fill in the blanks appearing in your lyrics seem to be thus:
Baithhe Soche ‘Brijdham’,
Neeko Lage Nahin ‘Kaam’.
Thanks & regards,
Avadh Lal
