When Atul started his alphabetical series of actresses who have lip-synced to Asha Bhosle’s voice, I suggested the names of some actresses who were missing from the list. I also sent the respective songs. Amala’s name was on my list, along with the song “Step by Step” from Dost (1989). When I asked Atul if he would mind my writing a post on the song, he replied that he would welcome it. This is how this contribution of mine came about after a long hiatus from this resourceful blog.

I became aware of Amala through her first Hindi film, Pushpak (1987). The film made quite a splash in the Hindi film industry, as it was a silent movie released in the middle of a decade that was full of very loud films. I did not have the chance to watch it in a cinema hall at the time. Amala looked quite different from the usual Hindi heroines of that era. In her interviews, she came across as a very sympathetic person who was actively involved in efforts against cruelty to animals. This brings us to the plot of the movie in question.

The story revolves around a forest officer played by Mithun Chakraborty. His main job is to fight poachers and deforesters in general. He meets a young girl from a well-off family. During the course of their courtship, they sing the entire repertoire of songs from the movie. They eventually get married. The attentive reader may now be asking who the friend (Dost) is. It is an elephant whose life is saved by the hero in the very first few reels of the film and who becomes a devoted friend to him. If the leading pair in a movie gets married midway through the story, misunderstandings are bound to crop up. Here, they arise because of the villains mentioned earlier and the eponymous elephant’s alleged misbehaviour. The latter part of the movie is all about how the hero regains his family and defeats the villains. The story, especially the elephant-friend part, somehow reminds one of Haathi Mere Saathi (1971).

Although I mentioned the song “Step by Step,” I could not find its video online. I do remember having seen it at some point, and I also remember that it is Amala who lip-syncs to Asha Bhosle’s voice in the song. However, since I do not have sufficient proof of this, here is another song from the same movie, with Amit Kumar and Asha Bhosle lending their voices to Mithun Chakraborty and Amala respectively. Although I am an avid Pancham fan, Dost (1989) did not appear on my radar for a long time. This is true of most of his albums from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Although it pains me to say so, the album pales in comparison to his creations from the 1970s and early 1980s.

Amala would go on to marry Nagarjuna, who was her co-star in Ram Gopal Varma’s Shiva (1990). As far as I know, she is still active in cinema and continues to earn awards for her work.
