Hullo Atuldom
At the outset I would like to wish our in-house Encyclopaedia Shri. Arunkumar Deshmukhji a very Happy Birthday. May he always enlighten us with his knowledge on well-known, known & not-so-well-known artists who have walked the firmament of the Indian film industry. May he always find artists about whom he has not-yet shared any information. May he always be available to us when we pop questions or doubts about anything and everything. All this in the time he finds between his writing for the blog and books. I would also like to wish him lots of time with his family and followers and admirers.
Normally, when I write a post for wishing our In-House Encyclopediaji, I look for hitherto unposted songs composed by C. Ramachandra, I know he is a huge fan of the composer. But today’s post is a deviation. So, before I began my post, I asked google a query “Posts by Arunkumar Deshmukh on Vasant Desai” and this is what google began its reply with:
“Film historian and music enthusiast Arunkumar Deshmukh has written extensively on the legendary Indian composer Vasant Desai. His (Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh’s) contributions span multiple vintage film blogs and platforms, focusing on Desai’s musical repertoire, his iconic compositions, and lesser-known trivia.
His commentary and posts on the maestro can be found across several primary archives:
Key Platforms & Articles
Songs Of Yore: Deshmukh has contributed detailed commentary to multi-part features on Vasant Desai. For instance, he provided insights on Desai’s post-50s era hits and his professional dynamics with artists like Lata Mangeshkar.
Check the detailed evaluation on Songs of Yore: Vasant Desai Part 1 .
Read about Desai’s best works with legendary singers in Songs of Yore: Vasant Desai Part 3.
Atul’s Song A Day: Mr. Deshmukh often authors or provides background context for posts featuring songs composed by Vasant Desai. You can explore tagged articles and specific song write-ups via the Atul’s Song A Day Vasant Desai Archive.
Recurring Themes in His Posts
Underrated Legacy: Deshmukh frequently highlights that despite Desai’s immense talent and contribution—such as composing the secular prayer “Aye Maalik Tere Bande Hum”—he did not always receive the widespread industry accolades he deserved.
Lata Mangeshkar Dynamic: He has shared rare perspectives and context on the working relationship between Desai and Lata Mangeshkar, particularly noting alleged tension regarding Desai’s support of other vocalists like Vani Jairam.”
I am so proud to know Arunkumarji (I love to address him as Guruji on the blog’s whatsapp group) and be a part of the same blog that he contributes to. For a person, who says that he picked up the art of writing for blogs & other places, who learnt to use the internet to share his immense knowledge, at a rather late stage in his life; he has made the medium his personal sphere and has reached a personal tally of 1882 on ATULSONGADAY (as I write this post). His contributions can be seen in some other blogs too ‘songsofyore’, ‘anmolfankaar.com‘ etc. to name the 2 that I am aware of; I am sure there will be more places on the internet which have Guruji sharing his thoughts & knowledge.
I would like to explain why I deviated from trying to find a C. Ramachandra song and looked up for songs by Vasant Desai.
9th June is the birth anniversary of the music director. He was born on this date in 1912 into a wealthy family in Sonawade village, Maharashtra state, and grew up in Kudal area, also in Konkan belt, Sindhudurg district. I have read in the posts, that Arunji has shared on the blog, that Vasant Desai had started his career with the famous Prabhat Film Company since it started making talkies. He acted, sang, and sometimes composed songs in Prabhat’s films. After learning the craft of music composition, he stuck solely to it since the 1940s. Desai scored music for a majority of V. Shantaram’s films.
I have very little knowledge about the music director’s work but am surprised that many songs that I am a fan of are compositions by Vasant Desai- songs like ‘humko mann ki shakti dena’, nain so nain naahi milao’, ‘dil ka khilona hai toot gaya’, ‘ae malik tere bande hum’ and so many more.
Vasant Desai’s music was heard in about 54 Hindi films & 20 Marathi films.
“Shaque” (1976) was a film that was produced by N.B. Kamat & directed by the Aruna-Vikas team. The film had a cast lead by Shabana Azmi, Vinod Khanna & Utpal Dutt. Bindu, Arvind Deshpande, Suhas Bhalekar played supporting characters and Durga Khote & Farida Jalal were in guest appearances. Utpal Dutt played a negative character.
The songs of the film which were written by Gulzar had Mohd Rafi, Vani Jairam, Asha Bhosle as the playback singers with Kumari Faiyyaz & J.K. Banerjee who’s names appear in the films titles sequence as “introducing” (as I was writing this post I saw a bit of the film).
This post by Sadanandji gives us details about the film. Personally, I have seen this film ages ago on some satellite television channel.
“Shaque” was dedicated to music director Vasant Desai who died during its making in a freak accident in a lift. The film’s background score was recorded after his death by musician Enoch Daniels and the film’s directors Aruna Raje and Vikas Desai based on ideas, composition and songs of late Vasant Desai (this is as mentioned in the titles of the film). This was Desai’s last released film as a music director.
This post by Sudhirji highlights that the song in the post played for hardly a minute in the film. As I ran through the film for writing this post I noticed that most of the songs were present only in snippets. I don’t know if that is all, that was there in the original film or the version I saw on youtube was an heavily edited one. The song with this post runs about two minute in the film. It shows Shabana Azmi visiting Kakaji (played by J.K. Banerjee). Kakaji compels Shabana Azmi to hear a recording of a song which he has just composed, and she sits through it uncomfortably till Durga Khote appears to her rescue.
Editor’s note:-This song, which was penned as a ghazal by Gulzar was originally sung and composed by Hemant Kumar as a non film song in 1968(not yet represented in the blog).
