Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 5
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
This rare offering comes to this blog at the express request of AK ji. I remember that a while back, someone, maybe AK ji only, had sent a message that this song needs to be searched. At that time, the name of the female singer accompanying Mahendra Kapoor was not known with certainty, and some guesses were being suggested. Anyway, I received a message from AK ji yesterday night, asking whether this song is traceable. I reproduce his message below.
There was a wonderful Mahendar Kapoor song (a duet) in the late 60s/early70s: Teri zulf mein chunke champe ki kaliyaan, teri maang ko motiyon se sazaa dun/ Mera vash chale to ae jaane tamanna, tujhe main bahaaron ki malika bana dun from Jaan Bachi Laakho Paaye, composed by an unheard duo called Ajay-Vishwanath. Very popular on radio, but seems to have vanished. I am surprised that it Is not on YT. Any idea of the song?
Well, yes sir, AK ji, very much have the song and here it is being posted today at your request. 🙂
Rightly said by AK ji, the name of the music director duo Ajay – Bishwanath is completely new to me. Scanning the Geet Kosh, I could find only one more film with this team as music directors – ‘Hanuman Vijay’ from 1974. As I tried to search for this and similar names, I came across two possibilities. One is music director MS Vishwanathan who had paired with music director Ram Murti to compose the iconic gem “Laut Gaya Gham Ka Zamaana” for the film ‘Naya Aadmi’ (1957) using the duo name of Vishwanath-Rammurti. Then, in the 1970s, I could locate another music director, actually two – one with the name Ajay Das and one with the name Ajay Swami, both with just one or two films to their credit. Just wondering whether Ajay Das changed his name to Ajay Swami, just to see if the lady luck would work in his favor. Anyway, this is speculative digging. Thus far, there is no confirmed information about this music director duo.
The Geet Kosh simply lists this film as one of the unreleased from the decade of 1960s. The banner that had planned for this film was called BK Films. Besides that, there simply is no other information available for it. Except for the details of 6 songs that were recorded for this film. The lyricist is Anjaan, and the names of the singers are listed. Most likely that these details have been captured from the labels of the set of records that carry these songs.
A rare combination of singing voices. A relaxed and soothing composition and rendition. As AK ji mentions, this song was very popular on radio during its time. And here it is, once again aired, upon the reminder from AK ji.
Listen and enjoy.

mere saath chal tu
main raahon mein teri sitaare bichhaa doon oon
mera bas chale to sitaare to kya hain

Ajay-Vishwanath were self-acklaimed followers of Shankar-Jaikishan school of music (though they had never worked with Shankar-Jaikishan). This film even had a semi-classical song sung by Manna Dey, in Shankar-Jaikishan mould, whose words were: `Ho gori tori man mohani muratiya dil pe jadoo daal gayi’. Can this song be also found?
