Today is the 76th birthday of Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma of the Shiv-Hari duo. So on this occasion I was going through the list of movies for which the duo have given music and came across this song from Yash Chopra’s Chaandni (1989). And I thought bingo! Apt song for saluting the genius of Shiv- Hari and for the celebrations in our family that begins from tomorrow.
But before that a word about Panditji. He was born in Jammu to a singer Uma Dutt Sharma. At first his father was training him vocal and table, but later at around age of 13 he started learning classical music on the Santoor. His first performance came in 1955. He is credited with making the santoor a popular classical instrument. He has composed the background score for one of the scenes of V. Shantaram’s “Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje” (1956). He teamed up with Hariprasad Chaurasia and Brij Bhushan Kabra for a popular concept album “Call Of The Valley” in 1967. The first movie where they gave music together was Yash Chopra’s “Silsila” (1980).
Now there is the wedding of my extremely talented niece this week. I just can’t imagine that the little 2 year old who was running around at my wedding is actually going to be wedded. She has requested all of us (her Chachas and Chachis) to put up a dance for her Mehndi/ Sangeet. And all of us have developed cold feet (oh and the Bangalore weather has nothing to do with it 🙂 ). But as far as shaadi songs go we have a huge thank you to Yash Raj films and HFM for this wonderful wedding number by Anand Bakshi and sung by Pamela Chopra for Sridevi. I am sure that he feeling expressed in the song is exactly what my niece will be experiencing. (o what would we do but for these helpful Hindi Film songs!!!) 🙂
