Hullo to atuldom

Today is the 76th birthday of Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma of the Shiv-Hari duo. So on this occasion I was going through the list of movies for which the duo have given music and came across this song from Yash Chopra’s Chaandni (1989). And I thought bingo! Apt song for saluting the genius of Shiv- Hari and for the celebrations in our family that begins from tomorrow.

But before that a word about Panditji. He was born in Jammu to a singer Uma Dutt Sharma. At first his father was training him vocal and table, but later at around age of 13 he started learning classical music on the Santoor. His first performance came in 1955. He is credited with making the santoor a popular classical instrument. He has composed the background score for one of the scenes of V. Shantaram’s “Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje” (1956). He teamed up with Hariprasad Chaurasia and Brij Bhushan Kabra for a popular concept album “Call Of The Valley” in 1967. The first movie where they gave music together was Yash Chopra’s “Silsila” (1980).

Now there is the wedding of my extremely talented niece this week. I just can’t imagine that the little 2 year old who was running around at my wedding is actually going to be wedded. She has requested all of us (her Chachas and Chachis) to put up a dance for her Mehndi/ Sangeet. And all of us have developed cold feet (oh and the Bangalore weather has nothing to do with it 🙂 ). But as far as shaadi songs go we have a huge thank you to Yash Raj films and HFM for this wonderful wedding number by Anand Bakshi and sung by Pamela Chopra for Sridevi. I am sure that he feeling expressed in the song is exactly what my niece will be experiencing. (o what would we do but for these helpful Hindi Film songs!!!) 🙂

Song-Main sasuraal nahin jaaungi (Chaandni)(1989) Singer-Pamela Chopra, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Shiv Hari

Lyrics

main sasuraal nahin jaaungi
doli rakh do kahaaron
saal do saal nahin jaaungi
doli rakh do kahaaron

pehla sandesa sasurji ka aaya

achha bahaana ye maine banaaya
buddhe sasure ke
o buddhe

o buddhe sasure ke sang nahin jaaungi
doli rakh do kahaaron
saal do saal nahin jaaungi
doli rakh do kahaaron

dooja sandesa saasuji ka aaya
dooja sandesa saasuji ka aaya
budhiya ne haaye mujhe kitna sataaya
is budhiya ko
is budhiya ko ab main sataaugi
doli rakh do kahaaron
saal do saal nahin jaaungi
doli rakh do kahaaron

teeja sandesa nanadiya ka aaya
teeja sandesa nanadiya ka aaya
isne ishaaron pe mujhko nachaaya
use ghunghroo ab
use ghunghroo ab main pehnaaugi
doli rakh do kahaaron
saal do saal nahin jaaungi
doli rakh do kahaaron

chauthha sandesa nandoiji ka aaya
chauthha sandesa nandoiji ka aaya
main chal padi thhi magar yaad aaya
itni jaldi main
itni jaldi main kaise maan jaaungi
doli rakh do kahaaron
saal do saal nahin jaaungi
doli rakh do kahaaron

paanchva sadesa piyaji ka aaya
paanchva sadesa mere piyaaji ka aaya
koi bahaana na phir yaad aaya
koi bahaana na phir yaad aaya
nange paav main
nange paav main daudi chali jaaungi
doli ko goli maaro
maike vapas main lautke na aaungi
sainyanji se lipat main jaaungi
sooni sej sajariya sajaaungi
o banke bistar main haaye bichh jaaungi
