Today (30 january 2015) is the 67th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi (2 october 1869- 30 january 1948). We pay our tribute to the Father of the nation on this day by observing two minutes silence at 11 AM.
Mahatma Gandhi’s influence in our lives in incalculable. All the major movements of the world that began in the twenteeth century were pioneered by him, be they anti colonism, anti apartheid, non violent protests, movement against non touchability (an uniquely Indian social evil) etc.
As often happens in India, self seeking individuals have often used Gandhiji name to further their own agendas by claiming to be the followers of Gandhiji without following his messages in any way. They would just don Khaadi and call themselves Gandhians. They would go on Relay hunger strike (where they would skip just one meal) and describe it as following Gandhi ji’s method of hunger strike.
The true heart felt tributes for Gandhi have come from those who genuinely admired him. Such admirers included ordinary people as well as people of extraordinary abilities. If someone like Albert Einstein admired him, then one has to sit up and take notice. Einstein expressed his admiration for Mahatma Gandhi several times. Here are some of his observations on Mahatma Gandhi:
You have shown through your works, that it is possible to succeed without violence even with those who have not discarded the method of violence.
-Part of a letter that Einstein wrote to Mahatma Gandhi in 1931.
And here is what Einstein said about Mahatma Gandhi in 1950:
I believe that Gandhi’s views were the most enlightened of all the political men in our time. We should strive to do things in his spirit: not to use violence in fighting for our cause, but by non-participation in anything you believe is evil.
Einstein’s theories of Physics were different to understand for laymen. Likewise, understanding the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi was counter intuitive for people who were conditioned to thing and act differently. For instance Mark Shepard (biographer of Mahatma Gandhi)writes that the concept of satyagraha is “a hard one to grasp”–Especially, “for those used to seeing power in the barrel of a gun.”

When one looks at all the preachings of Mahatma Gandhi, we find a common thread in all of them. They all aim to make the world a better place by seeking to help mankind live in peace and with dignity.
On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary, here is a tribute song from “Uddhaar”(1949). This song is sung by Lata. Narendra Sharma is the lyricist. Music is composed by Vasant Desai.
