“Basant”(1960) was produced and directed by Bibhuti Mitra. The movie had Nutan, Shammi Kapoor, Johnny Walker, Minoo Mumtaz, Pran, Kammo, Murad, Vitthaldas Panchotia, Jagdish Kanwal, Shyamlal, Rajendra, V Namade etc with Cuckoo making a guest appearance.

Seven songs from this movie have been discussed in ther past, but so many songs for this movie have taken us only to the halfway mark, because there are 14 songs in this movie !

Here is the eighth song from “Basant”(1960). The song is sung by Rafi, Asha Bhonsle and S D Batish. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

The song is picturised on Shammi Kapoor (in disguise), Kammo and Johny Walker. This song takes place in a hall where their performance is being watched by many guests. The audience include Pran and Nutan.

There are other songs in this movie where Johny Walker lip syns in Rafi’s voice. Here he lip syncs in S D Batish’s voice.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

As per http://www.rekhta.org , the original she’r was written by Waheed Allahabadi.

Sri Sadanand Kamath must be correct as Rekhta must have done due diligence before attributing the sher to Waheed Allahabadi. My observation that it was by ‘Daag’, was based on two counts –
1. On many sites it is attributed to Daag, though I have not seen any established authority on this.

gives the full ghazal of which this is the Matla (first sher) and Daag is mentioned as the poet.

2. I recall seeing an interview of Firaq Gorakhpuri on Doordarshan, where he quoted this sher as an example of ‘bad poetry’ by some great poets, duly naming Daag! Firaq could be excessively caustic; I remember his comment that ‘sher hai ki butcher ki dukaan? dil rakh diya, kaleja rakh diya, sir rakhdiya!’!!

I hope that this correction now washes of this daag (blot) off Daag’s copybook and passes it on to his contemporary poet of the nineteenth century!

please read it in para 1 above:
humne unke saamne pehle to khanjar rakh diya
phir kaleja rakh diya, dil rakh diya, sar rakh diya.

qatra-e-khoone jigar-si kii tawaazo ishq kii
saamne mehmaan ke jo tha mayssar rakh diya.

zindagi meiN paas se dum bhar na hote the juda
qabr meiN tanha mujhe yaaroN ne kyoN kar rakh diya.

dekhiye ab thokreN khati hai kis kis kii nigah
rozne-deewaar meiN zalim ne pat_thar rakh diya.

zulf khali, hath khali kis jagah dhooNdheN ise
tum ne dil le kar kahaaN ay bandaparvar rakh diya.

Pratapji,
For the moment let us leave the ghazal to Daag and Allahabi and ‘guzzle’ the super joke of Firaqsab
‘sher hai ki butcher ki dukaan? dil rakh diya, kaleja rakh diya, sir rakhdiya!’!!!
The third exclamation mark is my small contribution to the joke!!!!

1. I agree that Rekhta’s information must have been after some research. Also, the above-mentioned ghazal attributed to Daagh Dehalvi does not find a place in Rekhta’s collection of ghazals by him.
2. At the same time, Pratap ji also seems to be right as he has cited his source from where he has reproduced ‘almost’ the full ghazal (maqtah – the last couplet invariably incorporating the poet’s name is missing).
3. But more than the above two conjectures, one would rather go with Firaq saheb’s endorsement of Dagh being the poet. Yes, he really had an acerbic tongue and a notorious temper to go along with it.
4. However, I wholeheartedly second Nitin ji’s suggestion that leaving the controversy aside, we should relish Firaq saheb’s scorn and contempt for the bad poetry by even the greatest ustads, notwithstanding Dagh’s stature.
All said and done, aesthetically the ‘sher’ in question is indeed atrocious.
