A look at her face (in the photos online), and it is difficult to believe that she is a grandmother of four years now. Her daughter, Riddhima, gave birth to a girl child in 2011. Rewinding further back, her wedding in 1980 to her frequent co-star Rishi Kapoor, seems like a news one read in the paper just a few weeks ago. At 57 today, her smile and the bright countenance belies her age.

A charming presence, as Peevesie’s Mom describes her memories about this simple and beautiful on screen persona, in the post just before this one, that has a simplicity about itself that will make her memories stay in the mine. ‘Do Kaliyan’ (1968) was a definitive performance as a child double role, and she charmed her way into many a hearts, including mind. A few years later, when I was re-introduced to her in ‘Khel Khel Mein’ (1975), ‘Rafoochakkar’ (1975) and ‘Kabhi Kabhi’ (1976), at first it did not register that this is the same Baby Sonia that I had a fancy for some years back. And of course, it was difficult to accept that she had grown up, and was romancing elderly men (as compared to me at that time 😉 ). Aah, the vagaries of child fancies.
And then, it seemed that she moved away from the silver screen too soon, getting married into the Kapoor clan, and taking on the mantle of a family lady. The interest in the current films dwindling, the closest memories that I retain is the decade of 1970s, and this ‘chulbuli’ charming young heroine as one of the best memories.
This song is from the 1979 film ‘Jhootha Kahin Ka’, one of the many films she appeared opposite to Rishi Kapoor – a romance that became quite famous in the industry and in the media. The film is produced by Ravi Malhotra for his own production banner RM Films, and is directed by Ravi Tandon. The cast of actors is quite a detail, and includes Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Rakesh Roshan,Vikas Anand, Indira Bansal, Bhagwan Dada, Prem Chopra, Brahm Bhardwaj, Preeti Ganguly, Brij Gopal, OP Goyle, Hangama, Helen, Jay Singh, Iftekhar, Pichoo Kapoor, Javed Khan, Harish Magon, Mushtaq Merchant, Indrani Mukherjee, Keshto Mukherjee, Neelima, Yunus Parvez, Dharam Veer, RP Sethi, Shanti, Vandana Shastri, Hari Shivdasani, Dara Singh,Om Shivpuri, Subhash, and Gauri Verma. The lyrics are written by Gulshan Baawra and the music composition is by RD Burman.
The lyrics of this song and the reminder was sent in by our dear Prakash ji. A typical ‘roothna – manaana’ song, in which the car mechanic hero is trying get a broken down vehicle to his workshop, and his lady love has taken away the keys, to tease him. He appears grim and unmoved, and so the lady breaks into this song trying to get a smile out of him. And when nothing seems to work, she gets help from his co-workers and has him strung on a recovery crane, very literally hanging by his collar. The high handed technique seems to work, for at the end of the second stanza, there is joy and there are smiles and hugs. View the on screen antics of this pair – the role model romance for the young at heart in the 70s. And even now. 😉 Enjoy.

But the dialogue audio posted is before the song “baarah baje ki sooyiyon jaise”. I may ve seen the movie only once but this is one of the childhood movies which is etched in the mind.
