Deven Verma, the Actor-Comedienne-Producer-Director was 77 when he passed away last year. Unbelievable that it’s a whole year since then. How time flies but certain voids are never filled.
He was born in Kutch and was educated in Pune. He was a graduate in Politics and Sociology. He was married to Rupa Ganguly, Ashok Kumar’s daughter. He was on the bollywood scene since early sixties working in about 149 movies. He was offered his first movie in 1961 by B.R.Chopra- “Dharamputra”. The 1963 movie “Gumrah” had him play a comic character that of Ashok Kumar’s servant. And that is what he is best remembered for- his comic timing. The role of Parveenbhai in movies of Brij like “Chori Mera Kaam” and “Chor Ke Ghar Chor” are an example as also his roles in Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Chaterjee and Gulzar movies. He was the winner for Best Comedian in “Angoor”; “Chori Mera Kaam” and “Chor Ke Ghar Chor”.
Who can forget his comic timing in tune with Sanjeev Kumar in Angoor? But the 1976 Ravi Tandon directed “Zindagi” had this pair in a completely different AVATAR. Sanjeev Kumar played Mama to Deven’s character of Prabhu. Here is a song from this family tear jerker movie where Prabhu (Deven Verma) is trying to cheer up his Mama (Sanjeev) with the help of the neighbourhood kids. The song is in the voice of Kishore Kumar and Rajesh Roshan is the music director. The lyricist of this song is Manmohan Talkh.

Deven Verma was a gifted artiste. I remember his role in film, Khatta-meetha and Angoor.
He was the only actor who did a Triple role and Directed the movie
Besharam-78, till Asrani with his Hum nahi sudharenge equalled his record in 1980.
His date of Death coincides with his sister in Law-Preeti Ganguly.
