#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
——————————————–
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 33 # Qawwaalis – 2
———————————————

Talking about qawwaalis, I remember, in my childhood there used to be programs of Qawwali muqabla (competition) and mushairas, and in ‘quawwali muqablas’ the names that easily come to mind is the name of Shakila Bano Bhopali, Jaani Baabu Qawwaal and Aziz Nazaan.

The qawwaalis mostly popular and heard on the loud speakers were “Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom Sharaabi” (‘Five Rifles’, 1974), “Raaz Ki Baat Keh Doon To’ (‘Dharma’, 1973) and “Chadhta Suraj Dheere Dheere“, a non film qawwaali by Aziz Nazaan (from 1970).

These were also the most ‘in demand’ in ‘orchestra’ during Ganpati festival and Durga Pooja seasons. I remember in one orchestra from Jalgaon there was one singer who used to sing the “Chadhta Suraj” number very nicely and he was very well appreciated by the audiences each time this orchestra team visited our place.

From the early seventies to late seventies, and thereafter to the qawwaalis of current times, the popularity of qawwaali has been going through changes and fluctuating according to times. In the seventies too there have been many popular qawwaalis in Hindi films.

Now during all those years whenever I read or discussed about qawwaali, one name that was always in my vague memory was the name of ‘Shankar-Shambhu’ and I was almost sure that there was a movie made on them.

But, that is how our mind gets made up from things happening around us when we are growing. And later they become part of our memory and these memories keep intervening in-between as we move ahead in life.

So, after stepping into the ‘internet world’ and after getting associated with this blog , I started searching for the info and got to know that yes there had been a film made by the same name but it had altogether a different story line, and it has nothing to do with these famous qawwaali singers ‘Shankar-Shambhu’. (Though, this film had a qawwaali song i.e. “Hum Lootne Aaye Hain”, which will be introduced in the post following this post).

As I was curious to know more about ‘Shankar-Shambhu’, I searched on the internet and found some qawwaalis sung by them, including ‘Non-Filmy’ also.  I think they have sung more non filmy qawwaalis than they have sung for films.

On our blog we have two qawwaalis sung by them.  They are part of the famous qawwaali from film ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’ (1960) – “Nigaah e Naaz Ke Maaron Ka Haal Kya Hoga“. The second one sung by them is “Kissa Hota Hai Shuru“.

Today I introduce to you, a qawwaali by these legendary singers from the film ‘Tumhaaraa Kallu’ (1975).

‘Tumhaaraa Kallu’ (1975) is a presentation  by Aarohi Film Makers, Bombay, and it is directed by Basu Bhattacharya. The main cast of this film consists of Kuldeep Bhagi, Kajri, Somnath Mukherjee, Devendra Khandelwal, Manik Dutt, Urmila Devi, Shaili Shailendra, Dharmveer, Shubhra, Radheshyam Dixit, Bharat Bhushan (not the Bharat Bhushan we know) , Nagardas Sharma, Mahesh Dubey, Jagdish Bansal, Shankar-Shambhu, Ramkumar, Babban, Kamal, Ghanshyam, Dulari and Anita Dutt amongst others. This film was passed by Censor on 23.08.1975.

There are two songs in this film, one each penned by Dil Lakhnavi and Gyandev Agnihotri. This qawwaali is from the pen of Dil Lakhnavi. The other song “Dardiyon Na Jaane O More Raja covers almost ¾th of the EP record released for this film (as per information in HFGK). Kanu Roy and Shankar-Shambhu each composed one song for this film.

Shankar-Shambhu, Jagjit, Chitra, Krishna Dasgupta and Madan Chopra gave their voices to the songs of this film. However in film this song appears to be incomplete and may have been edited or may be the clip available on YT does not contain the full song. Also there is one more song “Sumiran Kar Le Mere Manaa”, sung by Chitra Singh, which is also in the film, but not mentioned in HFGK. I would request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on above.

A short summary of this film is given on IMDB as follows;

This is a coming of age movie based on the life of a young man named Kallu, who lives with his wealthy family in a small village in India. Kallu is attracted to a pretty young woman named Laxmi, but is unable to express his love for her.

On her part, Laxmi too is attracted to Kallu, and would like him to take the lead in this romance. Kallu wants to write a love-letter to Laxmi, and is unable to do so, as he cannot read nor write. When he discusses this matter with his grandma, he is told that it is not necessary for him to learn to read and write, as the family is wealthy, and this matter can be taken care of by hiring someone who can read and write.

Story of this film is written by Prafull Chakravarty, screenplay is written by Gyandev Agnihotri and Basu Bhattacharya, while dialogues are by Gyandev Agnihotri.

I do not remember to have read or heard about this movie during those years, neither have I watched this film until this post. The film is available on line and for preparation of this post I have watched this film and it is an interesting film to watch and is definitely a film that is different from our other regular movies. I will not dwell more on the story of this film so that the interest of those who wish to watch it remains intact.

I would request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the film and how did it fare at the box office and about its songs. And most importantly I would request our senior members to share with us the information about this great quawwali singer duo – ‘Shankar-Shambhu’.

I do not know much about them (and I think they have not been discussed on our blog so far). I cannot differentiate between their voices also. I need to learn more about them.

In this song they are shown singing their own composition. They appear when the song starts and the rest of the song is in the backdrop of the two lovers meeting and being with each other. Part of this qawwaali also plays in the back ground when the initial titles are being displayed. A few lines of this song are again repeated in the background at the end of the film. In this video clip, we see the main flow of the song in the film.

Enjoy this lovely ‘naatiya kalaam’. The sufi is expressing the emotions of love and adoration in his worship of the Almighty. The indications of love are all for Him, and the interpretations apply equally to the love between and man and a woman.

[Notes: Meanings of key words (by Sudhir Kapur)]

hashr = Day of Judgment, doomsday, day of resurrection
mahshar = place of resurrection;
[In essence, hashr and mahshar refer to the same idea; hashr has a connotation of time whereas mahshar has a connotation of space]

raahzan = a highway robber
rehnuma = guide
fazaa = environment, atmosphere
haadsa = accident, calamity
sajdaah = bow one’s head, prostrate in adoration, worship

rooh = soul
aaftab = sun
mahtaab = moon

toor = Mount Sinai
Musa = Moses

[Moses heard the voice of God on Mount Sinai, and received the Ten Commandments from Him. He then expressed the desire to see Him. God said that Moses will not be able to sustain the presence, but Moses insisted. God appeared for a brief moment. The trees and vegetation on the mountain top got burnt crisp. Moses was overcome by His presence and fainted. So it is said that Moses was not able to see God, but when he regained consciousness, he saw the evidence of His appearance around him in the form of burnt trees and bushes. And so the lines

  musa tadapte hi rahe aur toor jal gaya
  aai ye naql e toor se be-saakhta sadaa
  tadpa diya kisi ko to kisi ko jala diya

The essence of the Mount Sinai spoke and said spontaneously – some one got burnt and someone remained in anguish; the indication is towards Musa who remained in anguish of not really being able to see God, even though the opportunity presented itself.]

be-saakhta = spontaneous
azhar = very clear, visible, apparent
mazhar = manifestation
daawar = a law giver, judge, God
pushtah = support, prop, embankment
shams = sun
qamar = moon

End of Notes]

I am ‘a fan’ of them. I love their sweet voices (unlike harsh voices of many quwaals) and their taans going in three octaves without sounding ‘besuri’
