“Teesri Kasam” (1966) was produced by Shailendra and directed by Basu Bhattacharya for Image Makers. The movie had Raj Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Ifthekar,Dulari,Vishwa Mehra, Asit Sen, C.S.Dubey, Krishan Dhwaan, A.K.Hangal, Pachhi, Ratan Gaurang, Mansaram, Shivji Bhai, Pardesi, Samar Chatterjee, Harbanslal,Sabita,Sabina, Moolchand, Keshav Rana, Rekha Mallik, Nabendu Ghosh, Keshto Mukherjee, Rehana,Amol Sen, Shailendra, Fazlu, Parmanand etc in it.

This movie, which was based on Hindi litterateur Phanishwar Nath Renu’s novel, “Maare Gaye Gulfaam” was a labour of love of Shailendra. Unfortunately, the movie goers at that time were not mature and refined enough to appreciate quality cinema and a movie as outstanding as this failed at the box office and this shock took its toll on Shailendra who died at a very young age of 45.

The movie may have failed at the box office, but it was a superbly crafted masterpiece that has since then won much critical acclaim with discerning movie watchers. The music of this movie has gone on to become timeless classic.

As many as ten songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. All these songs are all time great songs that all music lovers are familiar with.

I was given to understand that all the songs of this movie have been covered. But when I checked up, I realised that this movie had one more song in it that has not been discussed so far. This song is very much there in the movie and its video is available as well. This is one song that I was not aware of, but when I watched/ heard this song, I was bowled over. This song is just as great as the other songs of this movie.

This song is a nautanki song that takes place on a stage. The song begins with the tale of a king of middle east who had a daughter called Laila. Yes, it is a tale of Laila nad Majnu, sung in nautanki style replete with fully witticisms. The song is picturised on a few female dancers and this one male dancer who lip syns this tale. The singer is Shgankar Shambhu according to myswar and other online sources. But then Shankar Shambhu was not one singer but a pair of singers who were well known qawwals of those days. So this song may have been sung by either Shankar or Shambhu. Personally I am not much familiar with the voices of these two singers. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify this voice.

The song then ends on stage and then a new song begins which is lip synced by Mubarak Begam and a male voice (same voice that sang earlier or perhaps another voice). Picturisation wise this should be a separate song but it appears that this song is treated by online sources as one song. And all these online sources do not at all mention Mubarak Begam’s name in this song. I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us about the description of this song in HFGK.

The lyricist of this song is not known. The lyricist, whoever he may be, has come up with superb lyrics.

Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra long long ago.

with this song, “Teesri Kasam” (1966) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

tum mujhko dekhaa karo
aur dil-o- jaani

yehi khwaahish hai
tum mujhko dekhaa karo o o

kyaa haqeekat judaai ki
zaahir karoon
badi mujhko bhi jo
bekaraari ee ee rahe
bhoolti yaad pal ko
nahin jhoolti(?)
meri aankhon mein soorat

aaa aaa aaa aaa aaa aaa aaa aaa

maah-e-naqaab (?)
dil lagaake na
dil ko hataa…aaa… lenaa tum
bewaffaayee na karnaa
kabhi bhool kar
bewaffaayee na karnaa
kabhi bhool kar
gar mohabbat karo to
nibhaa denaa tum
bewaffaayee na karnaa
kabhi bhool ke ae ae

Congratulations Atul ji- Prakash ji on covering all songs of this film ‘Teesri Kasam – 1966′, and this films’ joining to the ‘list of movies -all songs covered’.

Thanks PC for the rare nautanki. It was classy. I was transported to UP.
Iftekhar, Krishna Dhawan etc can seen

Atul ji,

As per HFGK,this film had only 9 songs in it. The above song is NOT in the list.
I have read somewhere that the film Teesei Qasam-66,had actually 12 songs to start with, but at the last minute 3 songs were deleted from the film, before submitting to Censors. Those 3 songs, however, must have escaped and appeared on Internet later. may be the 12th song also will surface some day. may be,as you feel the above song is a combined song of 2 songs, making the total of 12 songs.

Thanks for this information. This song indeed looks like two songs one after the other. Total length of the song is nearly six minutes and that too makes it appear like two songs.

I mentioned it as one song based on the myswar list where it is mentioned as one song. But in that list, singer’s name is mentioned as Shankar Shambhu, and there is no mention of Mubarak Begam. It is another clue that the Mubarak Begam’s portion of the song is a separate song. That way all the twelve songs of the movie have thus been located and identified.

trying to put the missing words ; please review ;
– thha ek kaif ?? – ‘thha ek kais pisar azhad’
– sultaani ?? – ‘ sultaani naazon shehar thhi’
– fida thhi kaif per laila – fida thhi KAIS per Laila (Kaif should be Kais in
other sentences also)

Apart from the missing words completed by Avinash ji, these are some correct words :

‘ thhe ‘ alhadpan mein wo donon
ladakpan ka zamaana thha
aa aa aa
aake ‘ maqtam ‘ mein aapas mein
taak aur jhaank rehti thhi ee
yahi thha ‘ shaghal ‘ rozaana ka
padhne ka bahaana thhaa

Majnoon’s name is ‘Qais’ .

‘Damishq’ in third line from above is the arabic name of ‘Damascus’, which is now the capital of Syria. I thought the story of ‘Laila Majnu must be somewhere in ‘Iraq’, but it seems it originates in ‘Damascus’ which is in the west of Iraq, almost on the Mediterranean sea.

Few lines below that is the word ‘Raiyyat’ – the collective community of subjects of the king.

‘maqtam’ means the madrasa or place of learning.

‘shagal’ or ‘shugal’ is a favourite pass time activity.

I had seen this song while doing this post and mentioned it there :

A most charming ‘nautanki’ song.

Thank you nahm ji for the meaning of the words and all the translations. You are simply superb.

Thank you very much Nahm ji for the correct words, meaning of the words and other details!
