Nigaah e naaz ke maaron ka haal kyaa hogaa

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Film Barsaat Ki Raat (1960) is a tale of romance and love, built around a poet’s dream, and a troupe of singers who specialize in qawwaali singing. The storyline progresses as two sub plots intertwined with each other. The first is about Bharat Bhushan and his romantic interest in Madhubala. And the second is about Shyama and her family, who are the troupe of qawwaali singers, and their progression in the qawwaali competitions. Besides the wonderful songs that have been created for this film by Sahir Ludhianvi and Roshan, there are three iconic, and very famous qawaalis in this film, that basically defined its popularity in the minds of film goers.

The kind of competitions that are portrayed in this film, are the pastime of rich businessmen, who will wager a whole factory on a single evening of a qawwaali. The three qawaalis are shown as a progression of competitions. This qawwali is the first one in this competition series, that pits Shyama and her team, against another team that is led by actor Khurshid ‘Bawra’. Behind both teams are two rich businessmen, who have each placed one of their factories as the bet for winning the competition. This first round is lost by Shyama’s team.

In the film, Bharat Bhushan is an orphan child who has been brought up Shyama’s family, and there is a tacit expectation that he and Shyama will tie the matrimonial knot when they grow up. Fate intervenes, and Bharat Bhushan has a chance encounter with Madhubala, and his life’s interest gets defined. Bharat Bhushan is a poet, and expectedly writes for his family’s participation in such competitions and functions. In the storyline, when the family is preparing for this first competition, he is away from the family, and hence the family is without the support of their star poet. As the qawwali progresses, it becomes apparent that Shyama’s team cannot hold water to the opposite team, and they give up in the end, with their sponsor losing a factory.

On screen, the actors present on the two sides are as follows. Shyama and her younger sister, (role played by Ratna Bhushan, who is the real life wife of Bharat Bhushan) are the lead singers from their side. There are two gentlemen sitting on their side. The one with a beard is Shayam’s father (played by S K Prem), and the thin person next to him, with old fashioned glasses, is the businessman who is their sponsor (played by Haroon). On the other side, the lead singer is role played by Khurshid ‘Bawra’. Once again, there are two people sitting on that side. The thin bespectacled person in a black achkan (long coat) is the actor Mirza Musharraf, who plays the role of the poet/writer for that side. His takhallus is ‘fitna’ in the film. The person sitting with him, and occasionally patting his back, is the businessman who is the sponsor of that side.

The lyrics are by Sahin Ludhianvi, and the music is composed by Roshan. With this film, Roshan made an indelible mark on the industry as a creator of superb qawwaalis, and every qawwaali creation that came after 1960 was measured against this film’s benchmark. In terms of the singers, on the side of Shyama, Asha Bhosle is singing for her, an Sudha Malhotra is singing for Ratna. After the starting verse, however, they both are always singing together in chorus. The opposite side is represented by the iconic qawwaali singer duo, Shankar Shambhu Qawwaal. On this side also, the singing by both is in chorus.

The words of this qawwaali are a tussle and an exchange between ‘husn’ and ‘ishq’. The ‘husn’ is propounding its powers and capabilities to devastate the ‘ishq’, and in return ‘ishq’ challenges ‘husn’ to do exactly that.

Enjoy this wonderful poetry, being contested as a qawwaali.

Atul ji,
I missed putting in two names in the write up. In the para where I list the names of actors, one sentence is, “The one with a beard is Shayam’s father, and the thin person next to him, with old fashioned glasses, is the businessman who is their sponsor”.

The person with the beard, playing Shyama’s father is actor SK Prem. The thin businessman sitting next to him is Haroon.

Sudhir,

Thank you so much for giving this detailed background for the song. I saw this movie a couple of times, but didn’t quite follow the intricacies of the feud.

I thought Shyama and her ‘friend’ were very good, and now I know that the friend is actually Bharat Bhsuhan’s wife.

On the same topic, the other qawwaali song from this movie, “Ye ishq ishq hai”, I can never seem to get it completely. It is a rather long song, and several links have it in various levels of incompletion. The audi would be missing a few verses, the lyrics (text) would be missing a few verses, and so on.

Either you, or Atul or any o fthe cogniscenti here have a link for the complete version of the song, along with the lyrics?

Thanks.

Krishna ji,

The reason that the qawwaali ‘Ye Ishq Ishq Hai Ishq Ishq’ is generally not found completely, is the following. The complete qawwaali is 12 minutes plus. In that era (1960), the standard format of records was 78 rpm with little over 3 minutes of recording time on each side (total of 6 minutes for the two sides of the record). The complete song of 12 minutes could be accommodated on two such records (i.e. four sides). Hence physically two records were issued for this qawwaali.

After some years, as the visual memory of the public faded, the next generations started to treat these two records as separate qawwaalis. Although in continuation, their starting lines are different, that has led many to believe these to be separate songs. The qawwaali starts with ‘Na To Karwaan Ki Talaash Hai. . .’, which is the first record. The second record starts with ‘Ye Ishq Ishq Hai Ishq Ishq. . . ‘. Hence the confusion, and hence, in most references you may find these published separately and not together as one item.

To compound the issue, when HMV released a selection of qawaalis from Hindi films (sometimes in 80s or early 90s), they did not take the trouble to combine the tracks to present it as a single item. The selection contains two separate items, identified as above. And that has perpetuated the confusion even further.

We must thank Atul ji for locating the complete version, and publishing the entire qawwaali as a single item, with complete lyrics for the 12 plus minutes of performance.

Who was the actor who played Chand Khan in this movie ? Who are the male singers in the second (sequel to this) quawwali in this film “Ji Chahta Hai Choom Loon Tumhari Nazar Ko Mein” ? The main male singer sounds like Shankar Shambhoo [na khanjar uthega na talwar…]but in the credits the singers names are Balbir, Bande Hasan & Chorus ? Is this an error ?
