Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’ से ‘ह’ तक (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 13

“घर से तो कट चुका पत्ता”
As I search for songs of Rafi Sb, I continue to find unheard and obscure gems, that make one wonder – where have these songs been hiding so far. And more importantly, continue to marvel more and more at the versatility of Rafi Sb’s voice and the depth of his emotional connect with the intent of the song. When I picked out this song and heard it, the one word that flashed in my mind was ‘free spirit’. This song is meant to be a freewheeling song of a wanderer, who has no roots. As the song progresses, the mind catches the attention of the feeling of lightness one experiences, as the sounds of Rafi Sb’s voice sink into the mind. The sound is coming almost as if from the skies, light as the wind. It carries a plucky feeling of a carefree heart that is joyous in its rootlessness. I am so enchanted by the emotional expression in this song that today I actually went ahead and created a new category – ‘Free Spirit Song’.
One thinks of the multitude variety of songs that Rafi Sb has sung. And one wonders at the depth of the emotional treasure that he was carrying within. In every song, in every emotion, Rafi Sb is living that experience which is so wonderfully expressed in his singing. He has this knack of identifying the exact flavor of an emotion, and then present it with all the nuances that only heighten the correctness of the appropriate feeling. None else could sing like him.
The song is from the 1959 film ‘Kal Hamaara Hai’. This film is from the banner of K Amarnath Productions. This is one of the few films that K Amarnath himself produced but did not direct. The film is directed by SK Prabhakar. The film has Madhubala in a double role. She plays the role of twin sisters, one who is very traditional and the other who thinks that life is a fling and one should enjoy without a thought about consequences. The male lead is played by Bharat Bhushan. Others in the star cast are Leela Chitnis, Jayant, Jagdev, Deepak, Hari Shivdasani, Ram Lal, Wazir Mohammed Khan, Lalit Kapoor, Heera, Brahm Bhardwaj, Bishen Khanna, Jeevan Kala and Amrit Rana etc.
The story is of a lost son, separated from his parents when very young. He grows up to become a criminal of every sort. Unbeknownst, he bumps into his real father who is a corrupt and anti-national businessman. A conflict arises between them, as the young son draws a line when it comes to national interests for committing crimes. The story progresses on some predictable lines, although the father son relationship, when revealed near the end, comes as a surprise. This film belongs to the category of films produced in 1950s, that tackled the issues faced by a nation that has recently achieved its independence from foreign rule.
The film has seven songs written by two songwriters – Shailendra (3 songs) and Majrooh Sultanpuri (4 songs). This song is from the pen of Majrooh Sb. The film also has two music directors – Chitragupt (5 songs) and Gajanan (2 songs). The melody of this song is created by Chitragupt. The film is available on disc as well as you tube. Unfortunately, this song is missing from the disc version. We have the audio versions only available on the net.
Note: As per the comment below from Manju ji (daughter of K Amarnath, the producer of this film, this song is performed on screen by actor Deepak. Thanks Manju ji, for this input.
It is a beautifully crafted song, the words and the music is excellent. Of course, topped with the voice of Rafi Sb – rendered oh so wonderfully. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Ghar Se To Kat Chuka Pattaa (Kal Hamaara Hai) (1959) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD – Chitragupt
Lyrics
ghar se to kat chukka patta
hoon naujawaan main albatta
mere liye
ab ek hai
bombay ho ke kalkatta
ghar se to kat chukka patta
hoon naujawaan main albatta
mere liye
ab ek hai
bombay ho ke kalkatta
parvaah nahin
duniya mujhe hans ke pukaare
badnaam hoon
ye bhi to hai
ik naam pyaare
parvaah nahin
duniya mujhe hans ke pukaare
badnaam hoon
ye bhi to hai
ik naam pyaare
aaj le ke mera naam
hanste hi to hain tamaam
koi ro to
nahin
sakta. . .
ghar se to kat chukka patta
hoon naujawaan main albatta
ho mere liye
ab ek hai
bombay ho ke kalkatta
main to sabhi ke saath karta hoon bhalaai
dekho mazaa
phir bhi nikalti hai buraai
main to sabhi ke saath karta hoon bhalaai
dekho mazaa
phir bhi nikalti hai buraai
koi chor main nahin
seena zor main nahin
zaraa kismet
ka hoon
kachchaa
ghar se to kat chukka patta
hoon naujawaan main albatta
mere liye
ab ek hai
bombay ho ke kalkatta
bigde huye
laakhon baney
dekha yahin pe
hoon sochta
aksar yahi
baitha zameen pe
o bigde huye
laakhon baney
dekha yahin pe
hoon sochta
aksar yahi
baitha zameen pe
aasmaan ko pyaar aaye
meri gaadi dol jaaye
kahin de de
jo ik dhakkaa
ghar se to kat chukka patta
hoon naujawaan main albatta
mere liye
ab ek hai
bombay ho ke kalkatta
ghar se to kat chukka patta
hoon naujawaan main albatta
mere liye
ab ek hai
bombay ho ke kalkatta. . . aa haa haa

Thank you Sudhir ji once again for a wonderful & amazing write-up on one of dad’s movie songs. This song was picturized on actor Deepak.
As per comment by Pratap above
1. ‘koi chor main nahin, seena-zor main nahin,’ – is correct but
2. ‘bol jaaye’ should be ‘dol jaaye’

Sudhir ji
Any idea on whom it has been filmed. The starcast makes it difficult to guess, and like you said the video is not in the net or the disc
