It is all about feline creatures. Cats are said to have nine lives. Who says ? Maybe some legend. It is also said that the truth is stranger than fiction. I imagine behaviorally cats are closer to humans than monkeys, theory of evolution not withstanding. Or maybe felines are the evolved human race, and in previous lives they were human, who knows. Anyway I have also heard that the civilized world is all going to cats and dogs. No kidding, this proves my hunch that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. (Note : No sleight or slander intended to cats, dogs, monkeys, humans and their assorted species).
What with all the hullagulla in the media circus about ‘freedom of expression’ and ‘ freedom of choices ‘ just today I got into a heated discussion on things I strongly believe in and feel about, with two different persons and different times. I am told time and again especially by my peers that why to go so deep in matters not related to us directly or affecting us on day to day basis. Why not just go along with things around us as it is easier to go with the flow ? I am very sorry to say this is a defeatist attitude with which we have become programmed to react this way.
Earlier it happened that sometimes in the larger picture, small details would go unnoticed. Nowadays it is the minute issues that hold center-stage and they are used to camouflage the real serious matters.
Recently, a friend in office was listening/watching to some Punjabi songs on YouTube. I looked at the details of the song and was astonished to find the song writer was named “Muntashir’. It has to be a ‘takkhallus’, meaning ‘bikhra hua’ (dispersed) as far as I can explain it. Poetically the concept of ‘bikharna’ is wonderfully expressd in “Arziyaan Saari Main Chehre Pe Likh Ke Laaya Hoon” from the film Delhi 6 (2010) in these lines :
toot ke bikharna mujh ko zaroor aata hai
aur na i’baadat waala sha’ur aata hai
The word readily available to describe ‘muntashir’ is ‘scattered’ . Literally, it may be better translated as ‘gone to pieces’. Another meaning which comes to mind is ‘publish’ as in ‘advertisement’ which is ‘ishtehaar’ in urdu.

There is another famous relevant reference which comes to mind:

‘auraaq-e-hasti’ = ‘auraaq’ is ‘safhaat’ i.e. pages. ‘auraaq-e-hasti’ would literally mean – chapters and verses of life.
Going back to the my two sessions of heated discussions, yeah it is argued that everybody has their own choices to make and one should be free to choose. I say, the word free and choice and liking are liberally used and abused. Will someone tell me, if any of the creation in the universe had ever had a choice on where, why, when, how they were born and more importantly why, when, how and where they are going to die ? It is in between these two events, birth and death that we talk about choices and freedoms. And hey, aren’t we making the most of it ? What happens before birth and beyond death, is he question no one needs to bother their ‘intelligent’ brains with.
This song from ‘Yuvraaj’ (2008), I did like a lot when the movie was released. Recently, we were listening to a newer song by Alka Yagnik, when a colleague asked if it was Lata Mangeshkar. I said it can’t be Lata in such a recent song. That triggered the memory of this song, where Alka Yagnik is sounding so mature as almost Lata’s tenor. Other voices in this song are Naresh Iyer and Benni Dayal.
But the show stealer in this song is indeed Sonu Nigam. No wonder he is proud of the Rafi elements in his singing. In this colorful, multiple hat wearing party song, this composition by AR Rehman is a worth the effort by all contributors including Gulzar, talking of ‘dil ka ehwaal le ke aaye’. The word ‘ehwaal” is the plural of ‘haal’ as presented in the song :

Dear Nahm ji,
No, the color coding was not missed out in mail. Just that I was not able to get it done last night. One reason being that there are actually two more voices in this song, as per details available on line. These voices are of Naresh Iyer and Benni Dayal. Since these voices are new to me, I will need more time to correctly decipher the color coding.
I will try to complete it today evening. 🙂

I have the colour coded copy with me. If you could just finalise which voice belongs to whom, it should help you. There are some lines in chorus also , also some with Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik.
