Blog Day : 3647 Post No. : 14478

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 2
———————————————————————

On the occasion of completing 10 years of the blog on July 19, 2018, I heartily congratulate Atul ji and his musical bandwagon for attaining a very important milestone.

The blog started with the intent of posting at least one song a day. At the time of joining the blog in July 2011, I felt as to how Atul ji could make a commitment of posting one song a day. With family responsibilities, a transferable job with chances of getting posted at not-so-internet-friendly places, the target of one song a day was not so easy as it looks. To my pleasant surprise, the target of posting one song a day (actually more) on the blog has been, more or less, adhered to with a punctuality of more than 98 per cent. My assessment is that there may be, on average, not more than 10 days in a year when songs were not posted on the blog. But the team of regular (and irregular) contributors to the blog have more than compensated by an average posting of nearly 4 songs per day during the last 10 years.

I got to know from the special posts written by Atul ji on the occasions of the celebrations of blog’s anniversaries and milestones that during the initial period of the blog, the response was not as per his expectation. At that time, as I understand from his write-ups, Raja ji’s encouraging words inspired him not to lose heart and to do his karma. Later on, as I have witnessed, the visitors to the Blog increased manifold. Presently, the number of visitors to the Blog have crossed well over 10.5 million (more than one crore). Coupled with the total number of films and songs covered, this blog is the primus inter blog (first among the blogs) covering Hindi films and non-film songs.

I consider myself very fortunate to be associated with the musical journey of the blog for the last 7 years. Based on my experience, I would say that one of the greatest contributions of the blog has been the creation of interest in Hindi film songs of pre-golden era period. When I joined the blog in July 2011, I found it interesting, amongst others, Arun ji’s well-documented informative posts about the Hindi films and their artists, especially of the pre-golden era period. I do not think that information on many of the films and artists covered in such articles is available in any other blogs on Hindi films.

On the occasion of a decade of this musical Blog, I have chosen one of my favourite songs from Hindi films of post-2000 period. This song has been my inspirational song during my Himalayan treks. The song is from the film ‘Swades’ (2004). I am reproducing the full mukhda of the song to bring out the relevance of these inspirational lines in the context of the musical journey of the blog:

yunhi chala chal raahi
yunhi chala chal raahi
kitni haseen hai ye duniya
bhool saare jhamele
dekh phoolon ke mele
badi rangeen hai ye duniya

Apparently this song is also a ‘journey song’. The hero, Shahrukh Khan is on a journey in a self-driven caravan (camping vehicle) to locate his Nanny in one of the remote villages in India. On the way, he is joined by a faqeer (Makarand Deshpande) to help him find the correct direction to his destination (he has been intentionally misguided in the earlier part of the film 🙂 ). What starts as a song being heard from the radio on vehicle’s dash board, it becomes a voice over to Shahrukh Khan (playback by Udit Narayan) and Makarand Deshpande (playback by Kailash Kher). Hariharan’s voice is used at the start of the song for lines heard from the dash board, and a line in-between the song and towards the end. The song is written by Javed Akhtar which is set to music by AR Rahman. In an interview to ‘The Hindu’ which appeared in its December 25, 2010 issue, AR Rahman had revealed that the tune of this song was originally composed for one of the songs of ‘Lagaan’ (2001) but it was not used.

As stated earlier, some parts of the lyrics of the song are relevant to the journey of our musical caravan ‘driven’ by Atul ji in which many like-minded persons are fellow-travellers. Just like the faqeer in the film shows the direction of the destination to Shahrukh Khan in the picturisation of the song, Sudhir ji has been performing more or less, the same role in our musical caravan apart from providing other value additions. Other fellow travellers in our musical caravan have been contributing in their own ways to facilitate the blog with its intent.

Any journey through any form of conveyance has a final destination. But our musical caravan is a journey sans destination, although during the journey, there are intermediate destinations (milestones). So, for our musical caravan, journey becomes more important than the destination.

I have personally interacted with Atul ji only once and may be a couple of times through e-mails. But with my 7 years of association with blog, I feel that I know him through blog more than my interactions with him. Two lines of Allama Iqbal from his nazm, ‘Saaqi Nama’ perhaps sum up my impression about Atul ji in the context of his musical journey through the Blog:

bahut usne dekhe hain past o buland
safar usko manzil se badh kar pasand

He has seen many low and high (of this blog’s journey)
But for him, the (musical) journey is far preferable than any destination

I wish Atul ji many more happy and enchanting years of the musical journey of this blog.

Hullo Atuldom

Back to writing after a gap of 3 weeks. Lovely three weeks. Spent among the hills of North- East India and South India. Must thank my nephew for insisting that I accompany them. If the Himalayas and its snow-clad peaks are a heavenly sight so are the mountain ranges of the Nilgiris in the south – the common feature being acres of tea gardens. For the second weekend outing to the Nilgiris, I hold my son and niece responsible.

Trust humans to spoil a good thing. Where there was a lot of discipline among the locals at both places; tourists have ruined Ooty as much as say Lonavla, Khandala or Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra. Thankfully Sikkim has not faced much tourist onslaught and so is much cleaner. The air in these hill stations are so pollution free one doesn’t feel like returning to pavilion and the reality of daily routine. I am sure our Sadanand ji will be nodding in agreement being an avid traveller and having visited many such pristine locations. Hope I am right?

More about my travels some other time, I will get straight to the topic of this post.

This post is to wish the lady with the dazzling smile a very happy birthday. Unbelievable that she turned 51 yesterday. The dancer who out-dances her co-star without meaning to and effortlessly at that. But she is not all song and dance only; she is great in exhibiting all emotions with her eyes, face and voice. Just like the heroines of yesteryear, specially Madhubala, with whom she used to be constantly compared. Yes yes. I am speaking of Madhuri Dixit (now Nene). Having made her debut in movies through the 1984 Rajshri Productions ‘Abodh’ and tasting success with ‘Tezaab’, ‘Ram Lakhan’, ‘Tridev’, etc. she made a place for herself among the top-ranked heroines of Bollywood. Her teaming with Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt, Govinda, Jackie Shroff (all the reigning stars of that period) was well received by the audiences. In the later half of the 90s she also teamed successfully with the 3Khans. She was lucky to have roles written specially for her as in Prakash Jha’s ‘Mrityudand’ and MF Hussain’s ‘Gaja Gamini’.

As much as I love Madhuri and her movies with their songs and dances, there are some songs of her’s which I don’t approve of. For example, her song in the movie ‘Anjaam’ – “Athraa Baras Ki Kunwaari Kali Thi. . . Choodi Tooti Chane Ke Khet Mein” or the song from ‘Khalnayak’ – “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai”; and then there is ‘Mera Piya Ghar Aaya O Ram ji” in ‘Yaarana’ or even “Dhak Dhak Karne Laga” from ‘Beta’. All these songs and some more of that type, which made Madhuri Dixit a dancing-star, are full of double meanings and were lapped up by the public. But there also is a greater number of Madhuri songs which are just as popular and have more ‘decent’ lyrics. For example, “Didi Tera Devar Deewana”, and her songs from ‘Devadas’, ‘Saajan’, ‘Sangeet’ etc. (no, I am not going to list her filmography here 🙂 ). The song with this post is one such song.

It is from Rajkumar Santoshi’s 2000 release ‘Pukaar’ (making a debut on the blog).  The main cast of this film is Madhuri with Anil Kapoor and Namrata Shirodkar and a supporting cast of Om Puri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Rohini Hattangadi, KD Chandran, Neeraj Vora, Danny and Prabhu Deva (just for a song). It is a well-made film based on espionage in the army and had a love triangle added for spice which gives the central characters a lot of scope to showcase their ‘sacrificing attitudes’. The songs are penned by Javed Akhtar and AR Rehman is the composer. This song is sung by Shankar Mahadevan and Kavita Krishnamurty. It is a stage show to celebrate some event in the army cantonment. The song shows Madhuri decently matching steps to Prabhu Deva’s vigorous dance. Anil Kapoor, Namrata and the other members of the cast are in the audience which join in towards the song’s climax.

Wish you a very Happy Birthday Madhuri!

Blog Day : 3567 Post No. : 14298

Hullo Atuldom

This is the ideal time for this post as a cricket- crazy nation is enjoying the 10th season of Indian Premier League or IPL as it is called.

It is also the time to celebrate the 45th birthday of’ ‘the god of cricket’. But he himself is rather humble and human enough to say that ‘God of Cricket’ is someone else. He is also called the ‘Master Blaster’. He is a pint-sized tornado that burst on the Indian cricketing scene in 1989 following his awesome performances in the local tournaments of Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy and Deodhar Trophy. His inclusion into the Mumbai Ranji team happened in 1987 but that year he narrowly missed playing alongside his idol -Sunil Gavaskar who had retired from all forms of cricket after the 1987 Cricket World Cup. But he was used mostly as a substitute fielder. At the age of 15 years and 232 days, in 1988, he was picked to play for Mumbai against Gujarat and scored a century on debut, in fact he has scored centuries on debut in the Irani and Deodhar Trophies too. His brilliance was the talk among cricket followers of Maidan-cricket, in Mumbai, in that period and he was coached by the able master Ramakant Achrekar. At age 14 he attended the MRF Pace Foundation to train as a fast bowler under Dennis Lillee who asked him to concentrate on his batting. He holds a record along with fellow school-mate and India Teammate Vinod Kambli for an unbroken partnership of 664 in a Harris Shield Inter-school tournament. Oh, he has numerous records to his name – youngest player to debut in International games for India being one of them. He was 16 years 205 days at the time of his test debut and 16 years 238 days when made his ODI debut.

If the readers have not yet guessed, I am talking of Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, named after his father Ramesh Tendulkar’s favourite music composer- Sachin Dev Burman. (See the cricket to movie connection here, we simply cannot escape the two going parallel). So, like every normal youngster of the late 70s and early 80s cricket was Sachin’s addiction and he was lucky that his parents saw his talent early on and provided facilities to nurture his talent unlike other parents back then who used to feel – “playing all the time meant studies would suffer then what would one do for bread and butter?” It can be safely said that Sachin’s parents, more importantly his mother, must have been inspiration for parents of later cricketers specially from smaller towns and cities of India – hope that explains the emergence of players like the Pathan brothers, Dhoni, Sehwag etc.

These days there is a trend of biopics among filmmakers in Bollywood. I think ‘Bhaag Milka Bhaag’ (2013) was the inspiration for this new set of films. What followed was a movie on Azharuddin (2016), MS Dhoni (2016), wrestler Mary Kom (2014) etc. There was a movie even on the match fixing scandal that rocked cricketing circles and got bans of various durations for the players involved virtually finishing their playing careers.

But I don’t want to talk of sad occurrences like scandal or bans in this post. Let us focus on our birthday boy who played cricket for close to 25 years without a break? No there was a small break when he had an injured elbow and the world learnt what is a tennis-elbow 😉. There was a film in 2017 which was more of a docu-drama where Sachin himself faced the camera as the narrator of the movie; unlike the movie on Dhoni where Shushant Singh Rajput enacted the part and Emraan Hashmi played Azhar. “Sachin: A Billion Dreams” is directed by James Erskine and released world- wide in the month of May just as the IPL season was coming to a close. The movie shows Sachin as he is in real life. It has music by AR Rehman, and the songs are written by Irshad Kaamil. The song with this post is sung by Sukhvinder Singh and an unknown female voice towards the end, also in the English words. It begins on Sachin’s home ground – Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium where there are stands named after Vijay Merchant, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar- all of whom have played a major role in making cricket a national craze. It shows the back of a Sachin fan who was a permanent at all the venues where India has played cricket since 2008. The song with the mantra – chant “Sachin Sachin” that used to be heard everywhere whenever Sachin stepped on the field; be it for batting, bowling or plain fielding. He was a darling of the public. Wishing him all the best in his retired life and lots of good times with his family and friends.

[Ed Note: As per information from other online sources, the rap portion of this song is written and sung by Kaly.]
