PARISTAAN (1944) was produced under the banner of N R Acharya Art and it was directed by Mahesh Kaul. The star cast included Pahadi Sanyal, Anjali Devi, Kamal Zamindar, Ranjeet Kumari, Sunalini Devi, Master Amritlal, Moni Chatterji, Padma Banerjee etc. From the title of the film, probably many people may guess that it was a film belonging to fantasy genre. But it turned out to be a slapstick comedy though the story by Vaju Kotak was not less than a fantasy.

The shortened version of the story of the film which appeared in a review published in April 1946 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine is set out below:

A group of women form an institution called ‘Naari Pratishthan’, an anti-men front. The main objective of this institution is to show men in bad light. Men are constantly abused for one cause or the other. The elderly women in this institution try to bring up the young girls with their hatred for man folks. The girls are not allowed to meet any man.

Among the young girls, Chanchal (Ranjeeta Kumari) has already developed her interest in a city boy, Biren (Kamal Zamindar). Chanchal is severely pulled up by the Matron (Sunalini Devi) and her attractive assistant Shyama (Anjali Devi) who behaves as if she is strict in enforcing the Institution’s discipline.

One day, Rasik (Pahadi Sanyal), the musician with his dancers Banke (Master Amritlal) and Pyari arrive in the town. After some mix up, Rasik lands in the institution and come across Chanchal. A pandemonium breaks out as the men are not allowed to enter the institution. However, Rasik, in due course of time, impresses the Matron and get himself appointed as a dance teacher for the girls.

Over a period of time, he becomes close to Shyama to be his sweetheart. From that point onwards, there are romantic interludes between Rasik and Shyama on the one hand and between Biren and Chanchal on the other hand. In these interludes, there are ‘hit and miss’ situations as the meetings take place clandestinely.

The story reaches a climax when both the couples get married and the objective of the Institution is broken. The institution is turned in to a maternity hospital when Chanchal gives birth to a daughter, Shayma has two daughters and Banke having 3 daughters. Now the girls are no longer men hater.

The film had 10 songs penned jointly by Ninu Majumdar and Roopdas which were set to music by Ninu Majumdar. None of the songs have so far been covered in the Blog. In fact, despite the best of my efforts, I could not locate any of the film’s songs on YT. I have mp3 clip of only one song from the film from which I have made a video and uploaded the song on YT.

I am presenting the first song ‘phool uthhi band kali mann mann mein hook uthhi’ sung by Ameerbai Karnataki from PARISTAAN (1944) to appear on the Blog. The song is penned by Ninu Majumdar and Roopdas and is set to music by Ninu Majumdar.

I instantly liked the song when I heard for the first time a couple of month back. The song has the fragrance of Gujarati folk music. The highlights of the song are that a part of the mukhda is repeated and music director Ninu Majumdar has not used any type of percussion (Tabla or Dholak) in the orchestration which is very rare in Hindi film music. Even in the absence of rhythm, the song sounds pleasing to the ears mainly because of melody and harmonious accompaniment of string and wind instruments. Please listen carefully how the soft orchestration in the background adds lustre to Ameerbai Karnataki’s rendition.

In the absence of beats, this is not a foot tapping song. But my personal experience of listening to the song was that I started automatically clapping with the song like ‘clap clap clap pause clap clap clap pause clap clap clap…..’. This gave me a further idea to replace clapping with the sounds of dandiya I got from my granddaughter which she uses during Navratri’s dandiya raas. And voila, that sounded superb to me. But my grandchildren were not amused with my experimentation.

For me, this song sounds melodious with or without dandiya.
