‘Sakhi Robin’ (1962) was produced by Dhanpat Rai under the banner of People’s Pictures and was directed by B J Patel. The star cast included Ranjan and Shalini in the lead roles supported by Nilofer, Rajan Kapoor, Babu Raje, Shri Bhagwan, Habib, Vishwa Mehra, Dalpat, Shyam, Ghory, Shetty, Bhushan Tiwari etc.
The film’s director, B J Patel was associated with 28 ‘B’ grade films as a director during 1950-70, mainly in the genre of action, stunts, suspense thriller and costume drama. Nilofer, one of the supporting actress in the film was one of his favourites of director, B J Patel having worked in his seven films. She was also one of the favourites of producer-director, N A Ansari. She mostly did the roles associated with the villains of these genre of films.
I had given the story of the film in detail while covering the song, tere dam se ye jahaan hai. The condensed version of the story is as under:
King Dilip Singh (Dalpat) and his neighbouring King Rao Angaar are at war with each other for a long time. Both kings decide to meet for a negotiated settlement during which King Dilip Singh is kidnapped by the soldiers pf King Rao Angaar while his accompanied soldier Robin (Ranjan) escapes. King Rao Angaar demands a huge ransom for the release of King Dilip Singh from Shila Dutt (Rajan Kapoor), the brother of King Dilip Singh. However, he sees an opportunity to become the king himself by not paying the ransom. Robin tries to convince Shila Dutt to resume war with King Rao Angaar but instead he hikes the taxes on the subject in the guise of collecting money for paying ransom for the release of King Dilip. Shila Dutt declares Robin as rebel and orders his arrest. But Robin escapes. Since then, a ‘hide and seek’ game is going on between Robin and Shila Dutt’s soldiers.
During his escapades, Robin comes into contact with a village girl, Seema (Shalini) who has unknowingly given him shelter from the soldiers of Shila Dutt during a chase. They fall in love. Shila Dutt’s soldiers have seen Robin and Seema together. They capture Seema and Shila Dutt puts her in a solitary confinement in the guise of a ‘royal guest’ as a bait for Robin. However, Robin frees Seema from the captivity. Shila Dutt is disappointed by his soldiers inability to capture Robin. Madhuri (Nilofer) offers her services and arranges Robin’s capture in a deceitful manner. Shila Dutt orders Robin’s execution. However, the loyal soldiers with the help of hundreds of villagers who are angry with Shila Dutt for higher taxes help Robin to get him to escape to his den. He organises his troops along with villagers to fight with King Rao Angaar.
In the meanwhile, Madhuri (Nilofer) with the convoy carrying the ransom amount in gold coins reaches King Rao Angaar’s palace and delivers the ransom to him against the release of King Dilip Singh. Instead, Madhuri gets arrested as it was a ploy of Shila Dutt so that King Dilip Singh is not released, and he can become the King. However, Robin with his band of armed supporters storm King Rao Angaar’s palace and get Dilip Singh released. They proceed to Shila Dutt’s palace where he is dreaming of coronation of himself as king. However, the fierce fight ensues in which Shila Dutt is killed. Dilip Singh is reinstated as the King.
The film has six songs written by the debutant, Yogesh who has been accredited in this film as Yogesh Kumar. The songs are set to music by Robin Banerjee. Five songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 6th and the final songs, ‘yahee to hai sama’ rendered by Suman Kalyanpur who sings for Nilofer while Rajan Kapoor is swimming in the swimming pool inside the palace enjoying her dance.
The context of the song is that Seema (Shalini) has been captured by Shila Dutt’s soldier and is put under solitary confinement. The soldiers are pressurising her to reveal the whereabouts of Robin (Ranjan) which she does not reveal. At the same time, Robin along with his loyal group climbs the walls of the palace and the sword fights are going on between his group and the soldiers of Shila Dutt (Rajan Kapoor) who is enjoying his swimming in the swimming pool to the dance of Madhuri (Nilofer) by which time, Robin escapes with Seema.
With this song, all the songs of ‘Sakhi Robin’ (1962) have been covered on the Blog.
