“Rooh Pyasi Hai Pareshan Hai” sung by Anwar, is written by Gauhar Kanpuri and composed by Hemant Kumar. It is a very short title song of “Oos Raat Ke Baad” (1970).

We usually have seen and heard the haunting title songs from suspense/horror/thriller movies in the voices of female play back singers. Here’s a haunting song sung by a male singer.

This movie was produced and directed by Y B Siraj for 51 Cine Commercial corporation, Bombay. The movie had Sanjeev Kumar, Tanuja, Sailesh Kumar, Shaminder, Kishore Bhat (introducing), Aruna Irani, Madan Puri, Tarun Bose, Bela Bose, Asit Sen, Pravin Paul, Sundar, Amrit Patel, Dinesh Hingoo, Masterji etc in it.

Oos Raat Ke Baad is a suspense thriller film. The film mixes family drama, murder mystery and ghostly horror elements.

The story revolves around Thakur Sunder Singh, a wealthy landlord haunted by a guilty secret from his younger days. He had once fallen in love with a village girl and abandoned her after she became pregnant. Years later, he lives with his daughter Sharmila, who falls in love with Dr. Shyam, the family doctor. Sunder Singh strongly opposes their relationship after his scheming brother Madan Singh poisons his mind against Shyam.

Madan Singh has ulterior motives. He persuades Sunder Singh to change his will and replace Dr. Shyam with another doctor, Lakhan. Soon afterward, Sunder Singh suddenly dies under mysterious circumstances, supposedly from a heart attack. Because of his strained relationship with the Thakur, Dr. Shyam becomes the prime suspect in the murder.

Sharmila returns to the family mansion after her father’s death and discovers strange happenings in the haveli. The mansion appears to be haunted by Sunder Singh’s ghost. Frightening incidents, hidden motives and suspicious characters create an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. As the mystery deepens, the truth behind the Thakur’s death slowly emerges.

In the climax, it is revealed that the “ghostly” events are part of a conspiracy connected to greed, inheritance and murder. The real culprits are exposed, the mystery is solved, and the lovers are finally cleared of suspicion. The film combines gothic horror style with a classic whodunit narrative.

Today’s song features twice in the movie. Once during the credits and then again as the film ends. The links below play only the first stanza/antara, but I have added the second stanza/antara from the film video. You can watch the full movie here.

Editor’s note:- The opening credits of the movie mentions Anil Kumar as the singer of the title song. The voice sounds like Anwar so it appears that Anwar used to sing with the pseudonym of Anil Kumar during those days.

Song-Rooh pyaasee hai pareshaan hai us raat ke baad (Us Raat Ke Baad)(1970) Singer-Anil Kumar, Lyricist-Gulzar, MD-Hemant Kumar

Lyrics:

rooh pyaasee hai pareshaan hai
oos raat ke baad
har taraf maut ka saamaan hai
oos raat ke baad
rooh pyaasee hai

main koi gair naheen
mujhse yeh vehshat kyun hai
main toh saaya hoon tumhaara
tumhen hairat kyun hai
tum ko raahon ke andheron kee
shikaayat kyun hai
maine har mod pe ashqon ke
jalaaye hain charaag
rooh pyaasee hai

zindagee maut se miltee hai youn
hans hans ke galey
kaalee raaton ke liye
kaise kaheen shaam dhaley
chaand taaron ko bujha daalo
andhera kar do
raat ke rang ko kuchh aur bhee
gehra kar do
ho sakey toh na lagaao
meree hastee ka suraag
rooh pyaasee hai pareshaan hai
us raat ke baad
