C Ramchandra – 40th remembrance day anniversary on 05/01/2022

Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 7
—————————————————-
Rafi sahab sang 80 + songs under C. Ramchandra, starting from 1946 to 1977 beginning with Bachchon ka Khel(1) and Safar(2) in 1946. This is followed by 6 songs in ‘Saajan’(1947), two each in “Khidki’ and ‘Nadiya ke Paar’ in 1948.
Two of the most melodious Solos, which made both Rafi sahab and C. Ramchandra , famous have seen the light of day by this time. ‘These are ‘keh ke bhi na aaye tum, ab chhupne lage taare’ in Safar 1946 and ‘ham ko tumhaara hi aasra tum hamaare ho na ho’ in Saajan 1947. Geeta Dutt, Lalita Deulkar and Shamshad Begum feature in group songs and duets with Rafi in all these films till 1949.
Then there is Duniya 1949 with Suraiyya, where Rafi sahab sings two duets and two solos.
‘Namoona’ 1949 has the first ever Rafi-Lata Duet (tadpa ke mujhe ab chhod diya ) under C. Ramchandra.
There are no more solos for Rafi Sahab, till ‘Insaaniyat’ 1955, where Rafi Sahab is part of 11 songs including 5 solos, out of total 17 songs in the film. The journey continued with films like Lutera 1955, ‘Nausherwan-e-adil’ in 1957, ‘Amar Deep’ in 1958, ‘Paigham’ in 1959 and ‘Sarhad’ in 1960. Here they both take a break from each other, I mean C. Ramchandra and Rafi Sahab, till 1970 where they work together for “Rootha na karo”. Lastly Rafi Sahab sings teams up with C. Ramchandra in 1977 for the film ‘Akbar Saleem Anarkali’ where he sings 3 duets with the south Indian legend P. Susheela.
The association seems inconsistent, with gaps in between, and appears inadequate. But by 1960 Rafi Sahab had made his name as the foremost playback singer and C. Ramchandra’s career was petering out. The fact that C. Ramchandra himself was a singer of repute, could have been one of the reasons for there being so less songs in the 50’s decade. While Rafi sahab was giving block buster musical scores for established and non-established composers through 50’s, C. Ramchandra was also making great music with films like ‘Anarkali’, Shabistaan, Albela, Azaad and Navrang etc.
The song I am presenting in this tribute post on remembrance day for C. Ramchandra is a duet song from the film ‘Saanwariya’ 1949. Lalita Deulekar is the co-singer in this song, which is written by P. L. Santoshi. I have counted 30+ songs written by P. L. Santoshi in the excel sheet of Rafi songs, between 1948 to 1968. With Lalita Deulkar, there are total 8 songs including 2 group songs.
Here is the total no. of songs to the credit of all three, composer, lyricist and co singer and the songs posted in the blog:
Artist | Songs in blog | Songs in HFM career |
---|---|---|
C Ramchandra(1942-1978) | 556 | 110 movies(907) |
P L Santoshi | 212 | 664 |
Lalita Dewoolkar | 34 |
The following 6 songs from Sanwariya (1949) are already posted in the blog:

Duaa dene waalon hamen do duaayen | 2 October 2012 |

Chale gaye angrez english gaana nahin achcha | 5 May 2014 |

The present song in 7th out of ten songs in the film. Only audio link is available, but from the lyrics it appears to be a ‘holi’ song. Quite a spirited song with chorus and the chhed-chhad mode, which is usually the case with holi songs.
While writing down the lyrics, I had to take the help of head phones, as this is a very old song, almost 73 years old. The audio quality is sometimes very poor, and this song record is the same. But surprisingly or not so surprisingly, its Rafi sahab’s voice which is crystal clear and stands out as the humanely divine sound, in the portions he sings alone and along-with chorus also. He sounds more amazing in the last stanza ‘kahat kabir……’ part and the inevitable alaap in between.
If anyone present in that recording studio in 1948-49, is still alive today, surely could not have forgotten the sound of the echoing divinity of the singing voice, where it seems as if the primitive microphone in front of Rafi sahab is much too hungry to absorb his powerful voice. Or was the technique for echo in sound recording was in use back then?
I will hold this thought, till I find another amazing rendition by Rafi Sahab.
Song-Zara bach ke ho zara bach ke(Saanwariya)(1949) Singers-Mohammed Rafi, Lalita Deulkar, Lyrics-P L Santoshi, MD-C Ramchandra
Lyrics
Arra ra ra ra ra ra
Ra ra ra ra ra

Bach ke ae
Zara bach ke
Ho zara bach ke
Maaro pichkaari
Kalaayi tumhaari

Teri aankhon ke
Ho teri aankhon ke
Aaj sab rang pheeke
Sab rang pheeke
Ho sab rang pi ke
Khelan ko hori
Woh aaye rahi gori
Khelan ko hori
Woh aaye rahi gori
Jawaani mein ras ke
Haan ras ke

Arey zara bach ke
O zara bach ke
Maaro pichkaari
Kalaayi tumhaari
Na lachke
Haan re
