Today’s song is from the film Fariyadi-1953.

The film was produced by Habeeb Sarhadi, under his own banner Habeeb productions, Bombay. It was also directed by him only. There were two Music Directors, namely B.N.Bali and Gulshan Soofi. Gulshan Soofi was a multifaceted artiste. He had acted in 7 films, as a singer, he had sung 14 songs in 7 films and as a Music Director he gave music to 11 film, composing 66 songs. This social film had a cast of Rahman, Shakuntala, H.Prakash, W.M.Khan, Mirza Musharaff, Jankidas and others. All the 8 songs of this film were written by Lyricist Mujaffar Orakzai (what a strange name !). He gave music to one more film-Anokha jungle-1956.

The early 50’s period was when the older artistes, be it actors, Directors or M.Ds, were slowly going out of circulation giving way to newer entrants. For example, the music director of this film -Gulshan Soofi. Fariyad-1953 was his last but one film. After this film he gave music to only one film-Ghamand-1955. Then his career came to a close. Singer of today’s song- Pramodini Desai sang only in 3 more films (Ek do teen-53,Chaar Chaand-53 and Pehli tarikh-54) and her singing career came to a close. There Is an interesting story of how this pramodini was found from an obscure place in Maharashtra, by Vasant Desai, the famous Music Director.

There were 3 Major Centres for Hindi Film Production in India in the early days. Calcutta,Lahore and Bombay. From the period of Talkie films, all the 3 centres became very active and many films with lot of songs were produced. Initially,in the Talkie films, even the Dialogues were in poetry type,so it was difficult to demarcate Dialogues and songs separately.Films like Indrasabha-1932 had 71(or 69) songs.Similarly films from that era had anything between 10-50 songs each.

In the Calcutta centre, film music had a distinct influence of Robindra Sangeet,In the Lahore films it was Punjabi and folk tunes whereas in the western Bombay centre music was influenced by Marathi stage, Gujarathi Dramas and Parsi Theatre. Out of this, Marathi stage music had a pronounced effect on films as many classical Drama artists joined the Film industry. As such this music was well developed and its acceptability was taken for granted.

When more films and songs were made in Bombay, there was a need for more singers. The composers were constantly on the lookout for fresh singers. Prabhat Film Company shifted from Kolhapur to Poona, but there were many connections still left in the Kolhapur area. When Prabhat started making the film ” SANT SAKHU ” in 1941,the Music Director Keshav Rao Bhole needed new singers. His assistant that time was a young man from Kolhapur area, named VASANT DESAI.He was entrusted with the task of getting new singers.

There is a book “The Desai Trio and the movie industry in India” by shri Nilu Gavankar. He describes this episode thus-

Vasant Desai had lot of connections in Kolhapur and Konkan. He had learnt about 2 Desai Sisters of Kolhapur who were very good singers, but he did not know them.He went to Kolhapur and met Mrs.Susheelabai Gavankar, the author’s wife and his family friend. He enquired if she knew these girls. She said,Yes.Their mother Sharadini Desai is my friend.”

They both went to Desai house.Vasant Desai was introduced. There were 2 sisters VINODINI AND PROMODINI.Vinodini was about 15yr.old. Vasant Desai proposed that Vinodini sing for a Hindi film. There was a flat refusal ” as girls from good homes do not sing in films”. After a great convincing and a promise of personal protection, it was agreed.

Accordingly, VINODINI sang for her first Hindi film Sant Sakhu in 1941. Later she was given many opportunities to sing in Marathi films, Bhavgeets etc. In 2 years’ time Vinodini got married to Music Director PANDURANG DIKSHIT and became Vinodini Dikshit. She was actually more into classical singing and devoted time in that so she sang 15 songs in few Hindi films like Sant Sakhu-41, Gwalan-46, Lakhon mein ek-47, Poojya Gandhi ji-48, Sati narmada-50 and Bhagwan Shrikrishna-50. She gave stage shows for classical singing and was actively involved in Kalyan Gayan Vidyalaya near Bombay.

Her younger sister Pramodini desai followed suit and started singing in Hindi films, starting with Khush Raho-49 and Raaz-49.She sang in more films than her sister. Her films include Shokhiyan-51, Char chand-53, Fariyadi-53, One two Three-53, Kashmir-51, Nand Kishore-51, Sazaa-51, Gunah-53, Pehli Tarikh-54, Naulakha Haar-53 and Dilruba-50. Later she got married to Ashok Patkar and settled in Bombay as a Housewife.
So, this is the story of Desai sisters.

There is another interesting name in the film’s cast – H.Prakash. Hardly anyone will know about him. His story is amazing. He was lucky to repair the damage to his career by his own foolish nature. Few men in this world get such opportunities. The real name of actor H. Prakash was Hashmat Ullah Khan. He was born on 3-8- 1914 at Gwalior, where his father was a businessman. The family was originally a Punjabi Muslim. Hashmat studied somehow upto Inter arts and left the college. He was an overactive child , interested in acting in films.Hashmat ran away to Bombay and worked in Sagar Movietone. He got a small uncredited role in the film Village Girl-1936. Not satisfied with this, he travelled to Calcutta.

In Calcutta, Hashmat worked in 3 films-Taqdeer ka teer aka Premlakshya-36,Hawai Daku aka Bandit of the Air-36 ( this was the first film of K N Singh as a Hero. Mazhar Khan was the villain here) and Dangerous woman aka Khatarnak Aurat-38. He also got a miniscule role in New Theatre’s film Abhagin-38. Not getting what he aspired to, Hashmat shifted to Delhi and worked in A.I.R. as a singer. True to his nature, within two years he left this job and landed in Bombay again.

It is reported that he was very arrogant, untrustworthy and a first rate Cheat. It seems he was quarrelsome, a liar and short tempered. His experiences, perhaps, taught him a lesson and he decided to change himself and concentrate on work seriously. This did good to him in his life. In Bombay first he worked in Garib ki ladki-40, but the film got delayed and was released in 41 only. Meanwhile he did Rani saheba and Pyar also. This time his career took a good turn. Till film Garib ki ladki, he used his name Hashmat for credits, but then he took a new name Prakash thereafter till the end.

A changed actor Prakash became acceptable to the industry and films were on his way. In all Prakash did 5 films as Hashmat and 38 films as Prakash. However, he got only action, stunt and C grade films. Once director W Z Ahmed met him and Prakash went to Shalimar Pictures Poona to do 3 films for them, namely Ek Raat, Prem Sangeet and Mann ki Jeet. He was also a favourite of Master Bhagwan and appeared in many of his stunt films. The year 1946 proved to be the best year for Prakash, because he did 14 films in 1946.

After Partition he migrated to Pakistan and did few films there. He came back to India and started working here again as an actor. He was billed as H.Prakash or as simply Prakash also. His last film was Zamaane se poochho-1976. He did 62 Hindi films in all. He died in India on 3-5-1978.

I do not know about this film’s storyline or any other details. Here is the 4th song from this film, sung by Pramodini Desai with Chorus. Enjoy….
