Today’s song is the last and final song from the comedy film Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong-1971.

This coloured film was directed by S.A.Akbar. Lyricist was Qamar Jalalabadi and the music was by Kalyan ji-Anand ji. The cast of the film was Mehmood, I.S.Johar, Sonia Sahni, Aruna Iani, Pran, Tiwari, Kamal Kapoor, Tun Tun, Manorama, Agha, Mukri, Junior Mhmood, Polson, Ram Avatar and many others.

The film was typical Johar type and his as well as Mehmood’s fans filled the audience in theatres. Mere number of comedians in a film does not guarantee a comedy atmosphere. The story, dialogues and acting are also basics of Comedy. But then, like any other Comedian, these two Heroes too had their fans spread everywhere in India.

Kalyan ji- Anand ji had used 9 singers for the 6 songs in this film (6 Females and 3 Males). 2 of these songs had joint lyricists- Qamar and Indeevar.

The year 1971 spread a wide choice for the Hindi cinema lovers. Rajesh Khanna continued being the Super star. He gave Hit films like Dushman, Amar Prem, Haathi mere Saathi and Andaz-as a Guest artist with a hit song.

Dushman was a story of reforming the prisoner (like V.Shantaram’s film ‘ Do aankhen barah haath). Haathi mere Saathi was a remake of a South Indian film and showed the Human-Animal relationship. Amar Prem was a Love story.
Guddi tried to unmask the false world of Cinema. Jaya had one more film- Uphaar- based on the story by Sharat babu.

Dev Anand’s ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna ‘gave a Hit song ‘ Dum maro Dum’. Dev’s another film Tere mere Sapne showed Doctors’ lives.

Dharmendra’s Mera Gaon Mera Desh and Shashi kapoor’s film Sharmili had very good songs.

Sunil Dutt’s Reshma aur Shera and K.A.Abbas film Do Boond Pani had Rajasthan as the backdrop. Basu Chatterjee’s Anubhav with Sanjeev Kumar was so successful that Basu da handled the Husband-Wife relationships as his future films’ central theme in Avishkar, Madhu Malti, Griha Pravesh, Panchavati and Aastha etc.

Mrinal Sen’s Ek Adhuri kahani and Mani Kaul’s Ashadh ka ek din were made with loan from Film Finance Corporation.

A Postal stamp on Dadasaheb Phalke was issued in 1971. Vinod khanna and Randhir Kapoor got married. Directors K.Asif and Debki Bose died in 1971.

Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong (1971) is a Bollywood spy-comedy film directed by S.A. Akbar and written by I.S. Johar. The detailed storyline of the movie progresses through three major acts:

The film opens in Bombay (Mumbai) introducing two small-time, greedy conmen: Ramesh (I.S. Johar) and Mahesh (Mehmood). Ramesh poses as the “Prince of Pagdandi” to trick and marry rich widows for their jewelry. Mahesh outsmarts him by disguising himself as a wealthy Sindhi widow, marrying Ramesh, and robbing him blind on their honeymoon.

This sets off a chaotic chain reaction of petty revenge. Mahesh opens a jewelry shop, which Ramesh robs while disguised as an Arab Sheikh. They eventually become rival astrologers, constantly outwitting each other until they realize their mutual rivalry is draining their profits. To fix this, they divide Bombay into separate territories for their criminal activities.

The plot shifts when a wealthy scientist from Hong Kong arrives in Bombay. Before his sudden death, it is revealed that he developed a highly classified atomic bomb formula. A ruthless Portuguese dictator (Kamal Kapoor) wants the formula to blow up India.

The scientist’s daughter was murdered by traitors looking for the formula, but her father had already safely secured it in a locker at the Bank of Hong Kong. Coincidentally, a young woman in Bombay named Sonia / Usha Roy (Sonia Sahni) is an exact look-alike of the deceased daughter. The dictator and his associate, Mr. Pran (Pran), kidnap and blackmail Sonia, forcing her to travel to Hong Kong and pose as the scientist’s daughter to retrieve the formula.

Through a series of misadventures, Ramesh and Mahesh get tangled up in the scheme and follow the trail all the way to Hong Kong. Upon realizing that the dictator plans to destroy India, the two con men experience a change of heart. They ditch their greedy ways and switch to full patriotism to save their motherland.

Hong Kong becomes a playground for their chaotic schemes:

They sneak into prisons, transferring themselves from male to female wards to evade guards. They infiltrate a morgue and manipulate “dead bodies” to outsmart bank security.

When the villains try to forcefully marry Sonia off to Pran, Ramesh and Mahesh crash the wedding, turning the ceremony into a chaotic, free-for-all striptease. In a frantic climax on the streets of Hong Kong, Ramesh and Mahesh use disguises, musical distractions (dancing Garba on the streets), and slapstick humor to successfully secure the formula, defeat the dictator, and save India.

When I saw actor Pran’s name in the cast of this film, I remembered that Versatile actor Pran’s first Hindi film – as a Hero – was Khandan-1942 in Lahore. He again acted in another film of the same name, Khandan-in 1965. In the 1942 film he was the Hero, but in the 1965 film he was a Villain. He did exactly the opposite in another film of the same name. In the film Aan Baan-1956 ( Ajit-N.Jaywant), he was a Villain, but in the 1972 film Aan Baan (Rajendra Kumar-Rakhi) he did a benevolent person’s sober role in this film ! Pran acted as a Villain in the film Chingari-1955(Shekhar-N.Jayawant) and also in the film Chingari-1989 (Sanjay Khan-Leena Cghandavarkar).

Pran did roles in many remakes of his films. When he came to Bombay from Lahore in 1948, he got roles in films Grihasthi, Ziddi and Chunaria. In 1948, two of his Lahore made films – Birhan and Barsat ki ek raat – released in India. In both these films, he was the Hero, but in India, he started as a villain in his first 3 films. Kishore Sahu remade the film Grihasthi-1948 as Film “Ghar Basake Dekho”-1963. In this film Pran did the same role as in the 1948 film. Comedian Gope had made a film “Malkin” in 1951 (Gope and Yakub). His brother Ram Kamlani remade this film as “Biradari’ in 1966 (Mehmood and Kanhaiyalal). Pran was the villain in both the films.

In his 66 years of career, Pran did a variety of roles. Besides acting in remakes and same title films, he also worked in 2-3 generations of actor families. In the film Rajkumar-1964, he worked with Prithviraj Kapoor. With Raj Kapoor, he did films like Aah, Chori chori, Jis desh mein Ganga behti hai etc etc. He worked with Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor also. In 1973, he worked in the film Rikshawala, with Randhir Kapoor and in the film Bobby, with Rishi Kapoor. Thus he worked in 3 generations of the Kapoor family.

Pran worked with Naseem Bano in the film Sindbad the sailor-1952 and worked in many films with Saira Bano-her daughter. He worked with Mumtaz Ali and Mehmood. Pran acted with Sunil Dutt and Sanjay Dutt. He also worked with Dharmendra and Sunny Deol. There was no other versatile actor like him in the Hindi film industry ever again.

The main villain in this film was Kamal Kapoor. His snake-like eyes and fair skin made him look more like a KGB or Nazi baddie. Prithviraj Kapoor’s cousin, Kamal Kapoor, acted in over 600 films, spanning across three languages. He started off as a hero but with little success. From the Sixties onwards, Kapoor switched to playing a minor villain. His notable work includes Don, Gora aur Kala, and, of course, Mard, where he played the evil General Dyer.
Born on 22th February 1920 in Lahore, Kamal Kapoor completed his education in Lahore. He started his career in 1944, with Prithvi Raj Kapoor, working in his theatre. Kamal Kapoor’s debut film was the 1946 release, ‘Door Chalein’. This movie, produced under the banner of Durga Pictures was directed by Phani Majumdar and the music composer was K.C.Dey while Kamal Kapoor and Naseem were the leading pair. Kamal Kapoor played Raj Kapoor’s father in ‘Aag’ (1948) which was also Raj Kapoor’s debut film as producer-director. Later he got numerous offers to play similar roles which he flatly refused to do.

Kamal Kapoor’s career as a villain started with the film “Johar Mehmood In Goa” which was released in 1965. This movie proved to be a big hit thus putting an end to the bad times for Kamal Kapoor. Soon he was flooded with work and was offered to play different characters in films like “Johar In Bombay”, “Johar Mehmood In Hongkong”, “Jab Jab Phool Khile”, “Raja Aur Rank”, “Dastak”, “Pakeezah”, “Paapi”, “Chor Machaye Shor”, “Five Rifles”, “Do Jasoos”, “Deewar”, “Khel Khel Me”, “Mard” and “Toofan”.

He once again got a chance to play Raj Kapoor’s father in the 1967 release “Diwana”. In his career spanned over five decades he acted in over 200 films in Hindi, Punjabi and Gujarati languages. He played different kinds of roles from a gangster to a police officer. He played the role of Don’s right-hand man Narang in Don (1978). This blue-eyed actor always had a powerful presence on screen. He worked in 152 films – from Door Chalen-46 to Aakhri Sanghursh-97( last film). Kamal Kapoor died on 2nd August, 2010.

Here is the last and final song from this film, sung by Rafi and Manna Dey. This makes this film YIPPEED !

By some accounts there are some 100 plus duets of Manna Dey – Rafi including group songs. We have 44 posted in the blog.
