Mukesh and his Actors – 03
———————————————
It was 1967, nearly 3 decades since Mukesh started singing in HFM. Yet, his mettle was again put to test. The film was Milan (1967) for which the production house of L. V. Prasad, decided to rope in emerging composer duo Laxmikant Pyarelal (LP). This was in spite of their successful association with Shankar Jaikishan for Chhoti Bahen (1959), Sasural (1961), Hamrahi (1963), Beti Bete (1964) etc.
LP were already in huge demand with independent composing of more than 20 films in just 4 years since they made their debut in 1963 with Parasmani (1963). Quite a few of these 20 odd films were blockbusters.
When LP decided to engage Mukesh as the only playback singer for Sunil Dutt in the new film, Prasad productions were not all impressed and even demanded a replacement.
LP were uncompromising with their choice of Mukesh and threatened to quit the film if they were not allowed to have their say.
Mukesh was retained as the sole male playback singer in Milan (1967) for Sunil Dutt and the rest as they say is history. The midas touch of Mukesh was undented. In fact, he rose to new heights with the musical blockbuster.
After nearly 6 decades, what remains of the film in active memory is the glorious songs rendered by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar.
Mukesh had 3 duets with Lata and two solos.
One duet was of course the title song rendered several times in happy and sad moods. The second duet featured Mukesh rendering singing lessons to Lata in the film. The third duet being a happy and chirpy village fair song featured Sunil Dutt and famed actress Jamuna.
Of the two solos, one was Mukesh’s forte, a poignant number and another a lullaby which could put even the Gods to sleep.
Coming to the next actor in the series, I take up Mukesh’s playback for Sunil Dutt and here is the table of their association.

The debut playback of Mukesh for Sunil Dutt seems to be for singer Sudha Malhotra in the film Didi (1959). Readers are well aware that this duet was also composed by her. His next association was for the film Ek Phool Chaar Kaante (1960) in which Mukesh sang 2 solos and a duet with Lata Mangeshkar. Here, it is pertinent to write that Song No 3 was arguably one of the best classical songs sung by Mukesh and he does come out in flying colors in it. One only wonders why he was not offered more opportunities by composers to sing classical raag based songs.
Salil Chaudhary who arguably had the highest regards for Mukesh’s voice amongst all singers has composed 2 duets for Mukesh along with Lata Mangeshkar at S. No 5 and 6.
7-11 are probably the most famous songs of Mukesh for Sunil Dutt. In one film itself, he sang one-third of all his songs for the actor.
13 to 15 are also popular songs which are remembered to this date. The last solo from Darinda was released posthumously in 1977.
In all these songs, the famed hit-ratio of Mukesh is once again established. Each of the songs is well known and remembered till this date. There are few background songs and not exactly lip-synced by Sunil Dutt. I have intentionally avoided such songs.
Coming to today’s song, for a very long time, I had this strange intuition that this particular solo may not have been covered on the blog. Lo and behold, it was actually waiting for this post.
It is from the movie Bhai Bahen (1969). The cast included Sunil Dutt, Nutan, Ashok Kumar, Pran, Sulochana Latkar, Helen, Padmini etc. It was directed by A. Bhimsingh and produced by Ranga B.S. The composers were Shankar-Jaikishan.
The picturization of the song immediately reminds us of a similar song sung by Mukesh for Sanjeev Kumar. Here is the song from Manchali (1973) “tan man dhan sab hai tera” and beautifully described by Atul ji in the post.
Today’s song is sung by Sunil Dutt to an unassuming Nutan in a temple. To know, what happens after the song is over, I saw the film in super-fast mode and was not impressed with the mediocre plot of the film. And readers are aware that I am not a good storyteller. Please excuse me for the same. Interestingly, Sunil Dutt sings a line or two from the film Milan in his taxi with Nutan sitting in the rear seat.
Anyway, please enjoy today’s song. The antics of a pretending blind and the innocence of Nutan is to be watched to be believed.
Being one of the most adorable pairs Hindi cinema has ever seen, I really get confused with Nargis and Nutan as to who was the real life partner of Sunil Dutt. And, each time, my mind automatically and immediately resets and corrects itself. 😊
I have referred to the great Sanjeev Kumar above. Let me try my luck with him in my next post as he too has some wonderful songs sung by Mukesh.
