“Milan” (1967) was full of wonderful songs in it. The popularity of its songs during the heydays of this movie was to be seen to be believed. Personally I was a very young and impressionable kid who loved listening to the songs of this movie at that time. As for watching the movie, I finally watched the movie only in 1980s, which is not the same as watching this movie when it was first released.
Here is a jited lover song from this movie. Sunil Dutt is in love with Nutan, but Nutan is getting married with Deven Verma. Deven Verma was becoming typecast in roles like this, I think. even in “Devar” (1966), he hijacts Dharmendra’s lady and marries her.
Here is this song which is sung by Mukesh with his usual Midas touch. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Laxmikant Pyarelal composed the music.

I was listening to this song (after a very very long time) on youtube just as you were posting it. Coincidence na? Anyway I like it a lot just as I do most of the songs in this movie.

Are you sure you got the context right?
Milan is a remake of the blockbuster telugu movie “mooga manasulu” (silent hearts) by the same producers. I am not sure if I watched the Hindi version, I may have. But at least in the Telugu version, and I see no reason they would have made altered it to that extent, “Sunil Dutt/Nageswara Rao” as the local boatman, handyman, errand boy, etc adores “Nutan/Savitri”, the collee going daughter of the local landlord. One wouldn’t call it love, or that he was “jilted” by her imminent marriage.

did you notice., it is again devan verma here just as in dewar!! Seems he is a perfect fit for these kind of roles.
