Matwaali naar thumak thumak chali jaaye

Posted on: August 27, 2010

Here is a song from “Ek Phool Chaar Kaante” (1960). I had read a lot about this song, the last such reading being in the farmaish page of this blog. 😀

When I listened to this song yesterday, it was the first time I was listening to this song. I was expecting to listen to a song in Manna Dey’s voice, but I found myself hearing Mukesh’s voice instead. I have got used to Manna Dey singing semi classical songs like this and that is why I was expecting to listen to his voice in this song.

This song is picturised as a stage song with Waheeda Rehman and Sunil Dutt present on the stage. The song itself is not lip synced by anyone in particular, rather it gets played in the background.

Shailendra is the lyricist and it is his creativity in thinking up the lyrics of this song that makes this song what it is- viz a memorable song which is remembere eve today after the passage of half a century !

Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.

Lyrics

aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa aaa

matwaali naar thumak thumak chali jaaye
matwaali naar thumak thumak chali jaaye
in kadmon pe kis kaa jiyaa naa jhuk jaaye
in kadmon pe kis kaa jiyaa naa jhuk jaaye
matwaali naar thumak thumak chali jaaye

phool badan mukhdaa yoon damke
aaa aaa
phool badan mukhdaa yoon damke
baadal mein jyun bijli chamke
geet sunaa ke tu chham chham ke
geet sunaa ke tu chham chham ke
lalchaaye,
chhup jaaye,
haay haay
matwaali naar thumak thumak chali jaaye
in kadmon pe kis kaa jiyaa naa jhuk jaaye
in kadmon pe kis kaa jiyaa naa jhuk jaaye

ye chanchal kajraari aankhen
aaa aaa aaa
ye chanchal kajraari aankhen
ye chitchor shikaari aankhen
gayi dil cheer kataari aankhen
gayi dil cheer kataari aankhen
muskaaye,
sharmaaye,
jhuk jaaye
matwaali naar thumak thumak chali jaaye
in kadmon pe kis kaa jiyaa naa jhuk jaaye
in kadmon pe kis kaa jiyaa naa jhuk jaaye

aa milke ham dhoom machaa den
aaa aaa
aa milke ham dhoom machaa den
sapne sach karke dikhlaa den
is duniya ko preet sikhaa den
is duniya ko preet sikhaa den
jag dole
sang hole
aur bolen
matwaali naar thumak thumak chali jaaye
in kadmon pe kis kaa jiyaa naa jhuk jaaye
in kadmon pe kis kaa jiyaa naa jhuk jaaye
matwaali naar thumak thumak chali jaaye

My friend told me that movie name should have been “Waheeda & her four uncles (crazy)” 😉

I guess I have to watch this movie to confirm that 🙂

Btw, Nice song.

A lovely song where Wahidaji’s beauty and dancing talent comes through beautifully.
In fact throughout the movie she looks good. Other songs are also as lyrical especially the bhajan Banwari re…
Dulhan hum le jayege starring Karishma and Salmankhan is made on the same lines (copy!!!) of this movie.

I can’t take my eyes off of Waheeda in this song. She comes across like a typical South Indian girl, schooled in classical dance, both of which she was. She shows off, in one of the rare chances she has had in Hindi cinema (another is “Guide”), her classical dance training in Bharata Natyam, which apparently she learnt in Visakhapatnam.

Just look at her expressions at the end of each verse (“muskaaye, sharmaaye, haay haaye”, …)

And what can one say about Shankar-Jaikishan! they didn’t compose many classical/semi-classical songs, but whenever they did, they did superbly! Hats off to them.
