Tum mujhe bhool bhi jaao

Posted on: December 29, 2008

This is a song from Didi (1959) and what a song it is ! It is sung by a female voice other than the usual names. It is Sudha Malhotra who has sung this song. Not just singing, she was also the music director of this song. Lyrics were written by Sahir Ludhianvi.

The song is picturised on Shubha Khote, who used to act in leading roles those days.

Coming to the song itself, this song should be regarded as one of the immortal songs from that era, and this song by a lesser known singer has held its own till today.

Song-Tum mujhe bhool bhi jaao (Didi) (1959) Singer-Sudha Malhotra, Mukesh, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Sudha Malhotra

tum mujhe bhool bhi jaao to ye haq hai tumko
meri baat aur hai maine to muhabbat ki hai
tum mujhe bhool bhi jaao to ye haq hai tumko

mere dil ki mere jazabaat ki keemat kyaa hai
uljhe-uljhe se khayaalaat ki keemat kyaa hai
maine kyoon pyaar kiya tumne na kyoon pyaar kiyaa
in pareshaan sawalaat ki keemat kyaa hai
tum jo ye bhi na bataao to ye haq hai tumko
meri baat aur hai maine to muhabbat ki hai
tum mujhe bhool bhi jaao to ye haq hai tumko

zindagi sirf muhabbat nahin kuchh aur bhi hai
zulf-o-rukhsaar ki jannat nahin kuchh aur bhi hai
bhookh aur pyaas ki maari huyi is duniya mein
ishq hi ek haqeeqat nahin kuchh aur bhi hai
tum agar aankh churaao to ye haq hai tumko
maine tumse hi nahin sabse muhabbat ki hai
tum agar aankh churaao to ye haq hai tumko

tumko duniya ke gham-o-dard se fursat naa sahi
sabse ulfat sahi mujhse hi muhabbat na sahi
main tumhaari hoon yahi mere liye kyaa kam hai
tum mere hoke raho ye meri qismat naa sahi
aur bhi dil ko jalaao ye to haq hai tumko
meri baat aur hai maine to muhabbat ki hai
tum mujhe bhool bhi jaao to ye haq hai tumko

What a beautiful song!

I have listened to it multiple times.

Since I don’t know anything about this movie, the words intrigue me… she is telling him about her love for him, but he keeps saying that he loves everyone, not just her. Perhaps he is a saint, otherwise it just sounds odd. Or I am simply missing something here.

Indeed a beautiful song.
I have heard it before but had no idea it was sung by Sudha Malhotra. And I most certainly did not know that she had even composed the music for the song !!!
Thanks, Atul, for posting this gem.

I love this song, as well as the one sung by Mukesh. I had no idea that Shubha Khote had ever acted as the lead, and opposite Sunil Dutt too. I don’t know if he is a saint, since he claims to have had mohabbat with everyone!

I have been hearing this song on a Mukesh MP3 disk for the past few days. It is so haunting, and the lyrics are so unusual, and not knowing the storyline, and the context, it is also a little bit difficult to understand.

The character played by Sunil Dutt here seems to have been dead – as he is shown in a strange way, as if he s not physically there. Anybody know the story here?

Couple of comments. Is Subha Khote the daugter of Durga Khote, who by the 50’s started playing mother roles?

I read somwhere about the unrequieted love between Sahir Ludhianvi and Sudha Malhotra. One, is it true, and two, if it is, does the content of the song somewhat refer to that background?

Shubha Khote is the daughter of Nandu Khote who was the brother of Durga Khote.

There are some more songs penned by Sahir Ludhianvi which seem to reflect anguish on his failed relationships with a journalist-writer and the playback singer. Examples:

1. Jaane o kaise log the jin ko pyar se pyar mila – PYAASA (1957)
2. Kabhi khud pe kabhi haalat pe rona aaya – HUM DONO (1961)
3. Chalo ek baar phir se ajnabi ban jaayen hum dono – GUMRAAH (1963)
4. Bujha diye hain apne haathon mohabbaton ke diye jala kar – SHAGOON (1964)

Durga Khote was daughter of solicitor Laad .As such Nandu Khote cannot be her brother .These are altogether different families.

No word on the story-line or the context from anyone? I also found that intriguing. But my guess is not (1) he is dead (2) its a failed relationship as some of you have posited. I think he may be a social worker or revolutionary… But we shouldn’t be speculating.. Someone knows..

Thanks for the post and this gem Atul ji !
Like this song very much and I can keep it listening and listening and …
