‘Aahistaa Aahistaa-1981’ was directed by Eesmayeel Shroff for ‘New World Enterprises, Bombay’. It was produced by Sibte Hasan Rizvi. The cast of this movie included Shammi Kapoor, Nanda, and Padmini Kolhapure, Deven Verma, Shashikala, Ashalata, Aruna Irani, Savita Bajaj, Sudhir Pande, Manisha, Rakesh Bedi, Leela Mishra, Master Sandeep, Baby Waheeda, Baby Gazala, Sunder Taneja, Kalu Singh, Krishnakant Pandya (junior), Deepak, Iliyas Contractor, Pramod Pathak, D.A. Ambaule, Harish, Suresh, Ramesh and others. The movie introduced Kunal Kapoor and Soni Razdan. Kadar Khan, Rahman and Girish Karnad had a special appearance in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 05.10.1981. The music of ‘Aahistaa Aahistaa-1981’ was composed by the genius music director Khayyam Saab. Many songs from this movie became popular during those days.
The year this movie was released I was studying in 9th standard at a small town near Akola in Maharashtra. We were staying in a small colony meant for the employees of state electricity board which had a 64MW thermal power station there.
That time I liked the song ‘Nazar se phool chunti hai nazar aahistaa …’ very much and it was played frequently on radio and around in those days. Thereafter as I grown up I became aware of the other ‘poetic genius’ song ‘Kabhi kisi ko muqqammal jahaan nahin miltaa’ from this movie which is a timeless classic.

I have not watched this movie but over the years I have read that this movie is ‘tragic love story’ and its story has a ‘devdaasi’ angle and its story was written by M.K. Indira. There was a movie made in Kannada ‘Gejje Pooje’ in 1969 with this story first. The Hindi movie is a remake of this Kannada movie. The reviews of the Hindi movie, available on the internet, mentions that the Hindi movie was a debacle and the only saving grace for the movie were the performances of Shammi Kapoor and Padmini Kolhapure. There was a strong performance by actress Nanda too in this movie. She was nominated for the Filmfare award in the category of ‘best supporting actresses’ for this movie. However it was Padmini Kolhapure who won the award for ‘Special Performance’ for this movie.
Today I present the sixth song from this movie which is a duet song. Kunal Kapoor and Padmini Kolhapure lip-sync in the voices of Anwar and Asha Bhonsle respectively. This is a song of expression of love where the two lovers want to forget about what the ‘world’ says about them, however it is because of the ‘world’ around them that they have to sacrifice the lives in the end.
