Mukesh and his Composers – 34
Do Badan (1966) song “Raha gardishon mein hardam” was first recorded in the voice of Mukesh for Ghunghat (1960), which belonged to the production house of Gemini Studios.
The producer S. S Vasan felt that the song was not aligning with the flow of the film and he recommended its exclusion.
Six years later, composer Ravi took permission from S. S Vasan and included the song in the film Do Badan, in the voice of Rafi. Of course, the said song as well as all others in Do Badan (1966) did become quite popular. But sadly, the unused Mukesh version is probably lost forever. According to some sources, composer Ravi was said to be in possession of the spool recording of this unused Mukesh song, but unfortunately, it was lost in the Mumbai floods of 2005. Thus, the only place where there is a remote possibility of this song being traced is Gemini Studios, the production house of Ghunghat (1960).
My email communication to Gemini studios a couple of years back has yielded no response. Probably, it was not the right address, and I am trying to find other options with my friends in Chennai. It seems that the studio itself has now been converted into a hotel, but the archives must have been stored somewhere. I understand they did have/had some studio in Bombay as well.
Mukesh may not have sung the song with the same gusto as that of Rafi in Do Badan, but then it would be quite interesting to listen to his rendering, for his ability to churn the human soul is well known. Well, no comparisons or complaints, but then Mazhar Khan the producer and director of the film Pehli Nazar(1945) also wanted the immortal song Dil jaltaa hai to jalne de to be dropped from the film. Upon sobbing requests from Mukesh, he agreed to retain the song for the first week or so to know its influence among cinema goers and then take a call.
And, as they say, rest is history, for we all know what this song meant to Mukesh and HFM.
I have intentionally written this post with a rather abrupt beginning, haphazard flow of sentences etc. only to highlight and also request readers to throw any leads that they may have regarding the Mukesh version of Rafi’s song in Do Badan.
Coming to next post of this series, I have no clue why it took me so long for putting Mukesh and Ravi together. There are a few composers whom I have taken for granted that all Mukesh’s songs for them have been covered on the blog. But, I come across some rarely heard or not so popular song and then upon checking in detail, I get to know that I can cover a post and this is one of them. Mukesh and Ravi were extremely popular in their own domains and it would be interesting to study their collaboration. And so, here is the table.
| S.No | Name of the song | Movie (Year of release) | Co-singer if any | Lyricist |

| 7 | Mere peechhe ek deewana | Nazraana (1961) | Asha Bhosale | Rajinder Krishan |

| 13 | Main khushnaseeb hoon mujhko kisi ka pyaar mila (Multiple version) | Tower House (1962) | Lata Mangeshkar | Asad Bhopali |
| 14 | Jab Jab Tujhe Dekhoon | Premika (1977) | Ravi | |
| 15 | Meri duniya ko bahaaron se sajaaya tum ne | Saanjh Ki Bela (1980) | Prem Dhawan and Ravi |
Writeup for this post went into a hiatus mode for more than a week after I completed the above table.
There were two reasons. One was a minor health issue. The other being the vexation of learning the unfair treatment vetted to Mukesh for reasons which cannot be pin-pointed.
If readers can recollect, I had started this series “Mukesh and his Composers” with three prominent composers who engaged Mukesh in late 40s and early 50s and then simply forgot him inordinately only to have a few songs later on.
The three composers I wrote the posts were
• Naushad
• Madan Mohan
• S. D Burman
The debut post in the series on Naushad was sans the table of compilation, which I later covered in this post.
Nevertheless, it was disheartening to learn that yet another composer namely Ravi falls very much into the same category.
Ravi started his composing career in 1955 with Vachan (1955) and roped in Mukesh in 1960 for Apna Ghar. In 3 years, till 1962 we have 13 memorable songs. And then, Mukesh, all but vanishes in Ravi’s compositions. Rafi and Mahendra Kapoor looming large in his compositions is understandable, but Mukesh being almost ignored in spite of his hit-ratio track-record is really incomprehensible.
The above table of 15 songs is a mix of solo, duets with multiple singers, sad, romantic, cheerful etc.
Personally, to me, all songs are quite known and I am sure readers will be able to connect to most of the songs.
• 1 is a vintage Geeta Roy Mukesh classic.
• 2 and 3 are very good solos.
• 4, 5 and 7 are romantic duets with Suman Kalayanpur, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosale respectively. 6, 9 and 10 are typical sad songs of Mukesh which he himself could excel.
• 11 and 12 are again chhed-chhaad duets.
• 13 is a multi-version song wherein arguably Mukesh again dominates Lata and also the version sung by Mukesh remains more popular.
• 14 is being taken up in this post.
• 15 is again a well-known song.
The last two songs are from an era when Mukesh had already passed away in 1976 and it is obvious that the films took a lot of time for their release.
In the above description of songs, I have intentionally skipped 8, a beautiful duet with Asha Bhosale.
What a song this is. One of the best duets to be ever composed and sung in my view. Incidentally, it was covered by our Sudhir ji as a biographic post on composer Ravi. Readers are well advised to read the post and also listen to the duet. I am sure you would rewind to listen to it multiple times.
Today’s post is from a film Premika which is making its debut on the blog. The production house is Beekay Deejay Films starring Vinod Mehra, Usha Solanki, Usha Joshi, Komilla Virk et. al.
The music as well as the lyrics are by composer Ravi. It was produced by Brij Katyal and David Jefferies.
The film was written and directed by Brij Katyal.
There are a total of 4 songs in the film with one song, written, composed and sung by Ravi himself. 😊
So here is the solo and sole song of Mukesh in the film.

Song-Jab jab tujhe dekhoon mera dil ye boley (Premika)(1977) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Ravi, MD-Ravi
Lyrics
jab jab tujhe dekhoon
mera dil yeh boley
kuchh na kuchh na zaroor hai
tera mera naata
jab jab tujhe dekhoon
mera dil yeh boley
jab jab tujhe dekhoon
mera dil yeh boley
kuchh na kuchh na zaroor hai
tera mera naata aa
jab jab tujhe dekhoon
mera dil yeh boley
tu mujhe pita kahe
main tujhe beta kahoon
laadle aisa kahaan
mera naseeb hai ae
tu mujhe pita kahe
main tujhe beta kahoon
laadle aisa kahaan
mera naseeb hai ae
bhola bhaala pyaara hai tu
ankhiyon ka taara hai tu
jiska tu laal hai
wo bada khushnaseeb hai ae
kaash main wo munne tera
pita kehlaata
pita kehlaata
jab jab tujhe dekhoon
mera dil yeh boley
jab jab tujhe dekhoon
mera dil yeh boley
kuchh na kuchh zaroor hai
tera mera naata aa
jab jab tujhe dekhoon
mera dil yeh boley
aankhen teri mere jaisee
baaten teree mere jaisee
tu mera koi naheen
main tera koi naheen
phir bhi na jaane kyun tu itna kareeb hai ae
tere baghair mujhe chain naheen aata aa
chain naheen aata aa
jab jab tujhe dekhoon
mera dil yeh boley
jab jab tujhe dekhoon
mera dil yeh boley

Ravi and Mukesh form a combination to provide very good songs as listed. Even his GHUNGHAT song that was not used could have come out well with Mukesh’s voice. As written often, whatever Mukesh sung became hits andthis true irrespective of the music director!
