Hullo Atuldom

Wishing our in-house Encyclopedia, whom I love to address as GURUJI, otherwise called Shri. Arunkumar Deshmukh a very Happy BirthdayEmojiEmoji. May he continue to enlighten us with his painstakingly researched knowledge about all things connected with Indian Films as a WHOLE. He loves South Indian films as well as Made-In-South films possibly because of having been in Hyderabad in his formative years.

May his zeal to write posts never dim. Posts, that have a definite content, form and buildup leading to the featured film, artists and songs contained in the film. Posts that are not necessarily about the golden oldies or the middle generation films. I like what he says, “it is not necessary that only old songs are melodious, there are good songs in the later decades too”.

Arunkumarji’s posts have been tweaked (without much additions or subtractions) to become books which will hopefully become reference material for future generations of Indian film followers.

I have never tried to adopt his style of presenting in my posts as I know that is not easy.

I would have loved to present a song by C. Ramachandra (a composer who’s work Guruji loves) but I hope he likes what I am presenting here-in. 🙂

It is a song sung by Nitin Mukesh which is composed by Laxmikant -Pyarelal and written by Asad Bhopali (some sites on the internet credit Santosh Anand for this song). It is from “Ranbhoomi” that released on 16th August 1991. (Does this movie become an old movie, not-so-old movie, or a recent movie by the standards of this blog ?)

“Ranbhoomi” was produced by Vijay Sinha (would love to know who he was) and directed by Deepak Sareen who was an assistant to Yash Chopra in many films of the 1970s- ‘Deewar’, ‘Kabhi Kabhi’, ‘Faasle’ etc (to name a few). As I have said in the preceding para, Laxmi-Pyaare were the music composers who used the voices of Anuradha Paudwal, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Amit Kumar, Nitin Mukesh, Jolly Mukherjee & Sapna Mukherjee for the five songs that were written by Asad Bhopali, Santosh Anand, & K. K. Singh. Choreographer for the film was dance master Kamal.

Asad Bhopali- who was born as Asadullah Khan on 10th July 1921 in Bhopal- was a poet/lyricist who began his career in films in 1948; his first songs were sung by Mohd Rafi (Rona hai to ro chupke chupke) & Suraiya (Armaan lutey dil toot gayaa) in the 1949 released ‘Duniya’ which had music by C. Ramachandra.

Following this, he went on to write songs till 1990 when he fell ill and his family took him back to Bhopal. Going through the list of films with songs written by Asad Bhopali, I find very few albums where all are from his pen- whether in the initial stages of his career or later. Our blog’s stats page says that he has about 531 songs (the blog has 261 of these) to his name in Hindi films the last of which were in films that released after his death on 9thJune 1990.

Asad Bhopali’s most popular songs were ‘woh jab yaad aaye bahut yaad aaye’ & ‘mere dil mein halki si’ composed by Laxmi-Pyare in ‘Parasmani’ (1963). He won the Filmfare award for Best Lyrics for the 1989 released ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ at the awards function held in 1990. Unfortunately, he couldn’t collect the award personally as he was ill and in Bhopal.

Coming back to ‘Ranbhoomi’- it had Dimple Kapadia, Neelam, Shatrughan Sinha, Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor in pivotal roles with Raza Murad, Gulshan Grover, Shekhar Suman, Sayeed Jaffery, Anu Kapoor, Anjan Srivastav, Mangal Dhillon, Yunus Parvez, Amita Nangia, Bharat Bhushan, Parijat (I think she is Bharat Bhushan’s grand child) etc. in supporting roles.

I have seen parts of this film ages back, and this is what I recall about it

Village born, simple-minded and honest, Bholanath (Rishi Kapoor) comes to the big city with five hundred rupees, which he decides to keep with a prostitute (Dimple), as he feels that his money will be a lot safer with her, than with him. He then befriends a dreaded gangster, Roopa Singh (Shatrughan Sinha), and goes to live and keep house for him. In an attempt to end hostilities between Roopa Singh and rival gangster, Chandan Singh (Jeetendra), he offers himself as a hostage.

In the song with this post we find that Rishi Kapoor is the only one singing & dancing at the wedding of Parijat to Shekhar Suman. Shatrughan Sinha & his team are fully armed to be prepared for any hanky-panky that Jeetendra & his team may resort to. I also found that just before this song Rishi Kapoor has gone to meet Jeetendra & Shatrughan Sinha as the ‘premdoot’ of the lovers and facilitate the wedding. we also have fleeting glimpses of the heroines Neelam & Dimple.

I need to see the rest of the film to give the complete story.

haaye haaye re meree gaadee chhootee jaaye
ho dil pagla shor machaaye
haaye re ye sabkee khushee mein gaaye
ye sabkee khushee mein gaaye
mere dil ko pakad lo
haaye haaye re meree gaadee chhootee jaaye
o meree gaadee chhootee jaaye
meree gaadee chhootee jaaye
