Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) Part-2 –post-2 (1982)

In this post I am presenting a wonderful Pancham song from the movie ‘Ye Vaadaa Rahaa-1982’. I vaguely remember to have watched this movie during the weekly screening of movies in our colony club during 1982-1983. The year 1982-1983 was the academic year of class Xth for me, which means I would be appearing for board exams in the month of March-1983. I was above fourteen years of age when I would have watched this movie. So that was a perfect time for a growing person to get ‘dreamy’ in life and about life around us. The school days were full of fun. Every one of my friends was serious about studies I was the one more interested in cricket and was missing someone who had left for another town due to transfer of her father from the place where we were staying. I remember I liked this movie and its music very much and the songs from this movie have remained close to my heart ever since. On this blog we have so far covered four songs from this movie.

‘Ye Vaadaa Rahaa-1982’ was directed by Kapil Kapoor for ‘Rose Movies, Bombay’. It was produced by Ramesh Behl. It had Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, Poonam Dhillon, Sarika, Rakhi, Rakesh Bedi, Iftekhar, Agha, Sundar, Gulshan Bawra, Hari Shivdasani, Chandu Prakash, Madan Joshi, Shrimati Mistry, Prasad, Pappu, Geeta, Aditya, Shanta, Salma, Asha, Avinash Thakur and others. Shammi Kapoor made a special appearance in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 31.03.1982. ‘Ye Vaada Rahaa-1982’ had six songs penned by Gulshan Bawra and composed by Rahul Dev Burman. One two singers, viz.Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle were use for the songs of this movie.

Though this movie ‘Ye Vaadaa Rahaa’ has some great music composed by R.D. Burman, none of the songs from this movie featured in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala of that year 1982. Only one song from this movie was considered in ‘chhaaon’ list or shadow list i.e. ‘Tu, tu hai wahee dil ne jise apna kahaa’.

Here is the situation for this song in the movie:-
As the movie starts, we see a temple on a hilltop and Vikram (Rishi Kapoor) ringing the bell in the temple. The next we see is the idol of Lord Krishna with flute and a girl present there praying to the god with the ‘aartee thhaal’ in her hand. Moving forward we see this beautiful girl finishing her ‘pujaa’ and turning her face towards the audience’ side. The boy and the girl see each other and there ‘eyes’ talk to each other.  here is what the boy says (to himself😊) after looking towards the girl…

tumhee to ab tak meree raaton mein thhee
mere sapne kee tarah
tumhee to mere dinon mein ho
mere karam kee tarah
tumhee meree zindagee mein ho
meree saans kee tarah
tum mere aaj mein ho
mere kal kee tarah…

The boy comes close to the girl as if she would offer him either the ‘aartee’ or ‘prasaad’, but the girl just moves away from him. So, we the audience assume that this is the case of ‘love at first sight’:) from the boy point of view.

Next, we have the boy roaming in the village fair, where the girl is enjoying the ‘carousel ride’ and the boy is watching her. She gets down from the ride and goes past him to another stall in the fair. The boy is eager to know more about her. He doesn’t know where she lives and what is her name. At one of the gaming stalls of ‘ring tossing’ at the village fair the girl attempts to win a necklace which she likes very much but fails in her bid. The girl is accompanied by her uncle there. The girl’s uncle enourages her ‘ek baar aur koshish karlo’ but before that the boy has already won it. The girl’s dejected uncle tells her –

‘Chalo Sunitaa beti’

(Sunitaa …) (now the boy gets to know her name, the perfect beginning of love – to fall in love with the name first 😊

Sunitaa … Sunitaa… Sunitaa

Vikram has a friend (Rakesh Bedi) who is an artist, and both are at a beautiful scenic location in the hills, where he is sketching something.

hoye, kyaa huaa,
ah
sunitaa kaun hain… mujhe pataa hai ae
kyaa…
love, pyaar ishq mohabbat,
ha ha ha
memsaab hain kaun, rehtee kahaan hai ..

yahee to naheen pataa yaar

koi tasveer hain uskee ..

naheen

to ban jaayegee

kaise?

arey tu dekh naa aa …a… bataa… bataa uskaa chehraa kaisaa hai …

and we have the boy singing this song …aisaa kabhee huaa naheen

The song is an audio visual treat. It grows and grows on one… magic of Pancham Dada.

The picturisation of this song takes place in beautiful outdoor location (either in Kashmir or Himachal ) where the two friends are near a river and surrounded by hills. Gogi (Rakesh Bedi) is painting a picture (of greenery & hills) on a canvas. But, he keeps it aside and starts drawing the ‘tasveer’ of the girl (Sunita -Poonam Dhillon) as the hero (Vikram/Vicky-Rishi Kapoor) sings and describes her in the song. Sunita appears in his daydream in various looks as imagined by the hero. 😊
