Hullo Atuldom
Followers of this blog may have noticed my inclination towards combining anniversaries of celebrities. That is, I try to find songs where two or more celebs, who’s birth or death anniversaries fall on the same dates or adjacent dates, are featured. I must admit that finding songs of some combinations are difficult as the concerned actors or actresses may have been in the same film but may have not even shared screen-time or screen-space, so finding a together song is a tall order.
I am in luck this time; for which I shall GOOGLE.
12th July is the birth day of the beautiful & multi-talented singer/actress Sulakshana Pandit. She was born into a family of musicians originally from Pilimandori Village in Hissar (now Fatehabad) district of Haryana state. The famous classical vocalist and legendary Pandit Jasraj was her uncle. Her brothers Mandheer, Jatin & Lalit are all music directors. She has three sisters too, of whom Vijayta was also an actress/ singer. (couldn’t find much details about the other two sisters -Maya & Sandhya) Her father Pratap Narain Pandit was an accomplished classical vocalist. Her nephew Yash Pandit is an Indian television actor. Nieces Shraddha Pandit and Shweta Pandit are playback singers. Her cousin is playback singer Hemlata. The family belonged to the Mewati gharana.
Her debut as an actress came in 1975 in the Raghunath Jhalani directed suspense thriller film ‘Uljhan’ with Sanjeev Kumar as her co-actor. Before that she had shared the recording room as playback singer for ‘Beqaraar dil tu gaaye jaa (Door Ka Raahi)‘ with Kishore Kumar & ‘Saat samundar paar ke…pappa jaldi aa jaanaa (Taqdeer) ‘ with Lata Mangeshkar when she was still a child.
In a career spanning approximately 13 years she was seen in around 25/26 films and was cast opposite most of the top actors of that period like Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Shatrughan Sinha, Navin Nishcol, Raj Babbar, Vinod Mehra etc and Sanjeev Kumar. ‘Do Waqt ki Roti’ in 1988, where was cast opposite Sanjeev Kumar, was her last release.
The last she was heard, in a film, was in the 1996 released Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed ‘Khamoshi- the Musical’ in the song “Saagar Kinare Bhi Do Dil Hain Pyaase” which was a duet with Udit Narayan. In her short career, she had sung duets with Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Shailender Singh, Yesudas, Mahendra Kapoor and Udit Narayan under the music direction of the likes of Shankar Jaikishan, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji, Kanu Roy, Bappi Lahiri, Usha Khanna, Rajesh Roshan, Khayyam, Rajkamal and several others. I am not sure of the number of her film songs but the blog has 34 of her songs. I think she continued to record non-film albums for a while before disappearing from public eye after a series of surgeries left her impaired.
Another actor who is remembered on 12th July is Pran Krishan Sikand. Pran, who was fondly addressed as Pransaab was one of the most successful and respected actors in the history of Indian cinema. In a career spanning over six decades he was also one of the highest-paid actors of his time. He was one of seven children, born in Lahore in 1920. He was academically gifted, especially in mathematics. His father had a transferable job, and so Pran studied in various places, including Dehradun, Lahore, Kapurthala, Meerut and Unnao (Uttar Pradesh), finally completing his matriculation from Hamid School, in Rampur (U.P.).
He began his career as an apprentice to become a professional photographer. An accidental meeting with writer Wali Mohammad Wali got him his first role in Dalsukh M. Pancholi’s Punjabi film ‘Yamla Jat’ in 1940. 1942 saw him in his first Hindi language film as romantic hero to Noor Jehan in ‘Khandaan’. From then on, till India’s partition he had acted in about 22 films (18 before 1947 itself). Post partition he came to India and landed his first film only in 1948; doing odd-jobs in the interim.
When he was cast in Bombay Talkies’ ‘Ziddi’ (1948, which was the first big film of Dev Anand too), his career took off and then there was no looking back. From 1950 to (around) 1967 he was THE villain or main negative character to the protagonists played by all the heroes (top rung, second rung and new comers). Even newer producers & directors cast him in their films even though Pran asked for the highest price among supporting actors. He was given a change in image by Manoj Kumar in his films like ‘Upkar’, ‘Purab aur Paschim’, ‘Sanyasi’ etc. Manoj Kumar specially wrote a character for Pran in his ‘Shaheed’ in 1965.
But why I am writing all this. Pransaab’s life story has been written in a number of posts on our blog, and is also available on various sites on the internet. One trivia, about this versatile actor, that I love to repeat is how he has acted with pairs of fathers & sons, mothers & daughters etc. He has been in many films along side Raj Kapoor as well as Rishi Kapoor (just to give one example).
I shall just say that this stylish (who can forget the different ways in which he held a cigarette, cigar, pipe or even a beedi & blew smoke rings) “VILLAIN OF THE MILLENIUM” had a long run in India’s film history having started as romantic hero, going on to play negative characters and ending his acting career in 2007 (a film called ‘Dosh’ don’t know much about it) playing a genial grandpa. That is he had acted even when he was 87 & had a career of almost 65 years. He passed away on 12th July 2013 at Bombay which had become Mumbai by then.
Now let me speak of the song which has Sulakshana Pandit with Pran on-screen. Yes! there is such a song.
I landed on it when I googled for films with the two actors in the cast. I found a 1987 film that was produced by R. K. Mehta & directed by Desh Gautam. It had music by Sonik-Omi & Varma Malik was the lyricist for the 5 songs which had Asha Bhonsle, Dilraj Kaur, Mahendra Kapoor, Sulakshana Pandit, Mohd Aziz, Raj Sonik & Shahid Bijnori as playback singers (the last two names are new for me).
“GORAA” had Raj Kiran, Sulakshana Pandit, Preeti Sapru, Ramesh Deo, Seema Deo, Rajan Haksar, Bindu, Mohan Choti, Anwar Hussain, Kalpana Iyer, Om Shivpuri, Jayshree T., Birbal, AND PRAN in the cast with Rajesh Khanna being billed as special appearance.
“Goraa” was launched in 1978 with the title ‘Sasta Khoon Mehanga Pani’. From what I have read online, the film had Rajesh Khanna play a dacoit (rather unusual for the actor). This was also the last released film of actor Anwar Hussain.
This is what one of the online user review has to say about the film
Fairly good watch
“Goraa” is one of those films that fared badly because it was long in the making. Sualakshana Pandit teams up with Kaka in this film & their pairing is quite good. They could have done more films together. The villains are good but not menacing.
Rajesh Khanna is usually not cut out for action but here he is convincing as a Dacoit. He is however let down by a weak script & poor direction.
But though it is a Dacoit movie, there is no violence & some of the scenes are straight from the heart.
It is a decent one time watch.
Today’s song is a four-singer song in the voices of the birthday girl Sulakshana Pandit wit Mohd Aziz, Mahendra Kapoor & Dilraj Kaur giving their voices to Pran, Raj Kiran, Preeti Sapru & Sulakshana (herself). It is a dance under the influence of ‘Bhaang’ I think going by the scene itself. I found it interesting to see character actor Kedarnath Saigal, who normally plays serious characters also enjoying himself in this song.
