Hullo Atuldom

“Manpasand” (1980) was a Basu Chatterji directed, Amit Khanna produced (sweet) movie which was directly inspired by George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Pygmalion’.

We had Dev Anand playing the music teacher, Tina Munim playing his student & Girish Karnad playing Dev Anand’s friend who helps in grooming Kamli (the datoonwaali a.k.a Tina) into a High society girl. Leela Mishra, Mehmood, were in the main supporting cast. Jalal Agha, Simple Kapadia, Pilu Wadia etc were in guest appearances. Then we had Tarun Ghosh, Raj Kishore, Birbal, Sundar etc playing minor characters.

Amit Khanna was also the lyricist for the nine songs, one of which is practically a two-in-one song. i.e. there is hardly any gap between the two.

Eight of these songs have been covered in the blog as detailed here:-

As can be seen from the above table, this film made its debut on the blog in 2009. I think it is high time it is YYIIPPEEEEd!!!!

We are revisiting this film today, on the occasion of the 74th birthday of lyricist, director, author, media executive Amit Khanna – the producer of “Manpasand”. He was born in 1951, in New Delhi. He was been involved with media since his school days. He began his career as an executive producer with actor-producer Dev Anand’s Navketan Films in 1971 and subsequently produced films such as ‘Man Pasand’, ‘Bhairavi’, ‘Aur Ek Prem Kahani’, ‘Lalchee’, ‘Papa Kehte Hain’, ‘Saaz’ etc.

Amit Khanna has written many film and non-film songs. He has penned over 200 Hindi film songs, working mainly with music directors like Bappi Lahiri, Rajesh Roshan and Laxmikant–Pyarelal. He penned lyrics for around 200 songs released in music albums by singers Nazia & Zoheb Hassan, Sharon Prabhakar, Salma Agha, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mahendra Kapoor and Shafqat Ali Khan. In 1984, he directed three music videos for Nazia Hassan’s music album ‘Young Tarang’. He was the lyricist for the opening theme song of ten Indian television series, including Buniyaad (1986), Dekh Bhai Dekh (1993) and Swabhimaan (1995). He was also a scriptwriter.

Amit Khanna began actively working in television as a producer-director in the eighties and set up Plus Channel in 1990 which was India’s first entertainment conglomerate and the largest independent producer of TV programmes. His other achievements include editing & writing in various magazines and newspapers. He has served on the Central Board of Film Certification and the Film Import Selection Committee; as a vice-president of the Film Producers Guild of India and has been on the committees of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation; Indian Music Industry and Film Federation of India.

He was a recipient of the National Film award in three categories- Best Lyrics for “Bhairavi” (1996); Best Hindi Film for “Gudia” (1996) & Best Urdu Film for “Sardari Begum” (1997)- all of which were produced by him.

Today’s song is in the voice of T.Meena. I have no idea who she is or was. When I read it for the first time in 1979 on the movie’s cassette cover I thought that it was a spelling error for Tina Munim or that she was the actress Meena T., sister of actress Jayshree T. After all these years I am still wondering who this singer is and I am relying on knowledgeable people in Atuldom to give further gyaan on this. Myswar.co just pointed towards one other song that she has sung in the 1980 film ‘Kismat’ that had music by Bappi Lahiri.
