Blog Day :

6447 Post No. : 20009

Our Blog has achieved a substantial milestone of completing 20000 posts with Sudhir ji’s post on a rare song, gham kaa banoge nishaana. When I had joined the bandwagon sometime in July 2011, the Blog had just completed 4000 songs in about 3 years. At that time, I had never imagined that the Blog would attain even a milestone of 10000 articles because it would have been a long haul during which the interest of the owner of the Blog (Atul ji) and the guest writers may wane because they may have to prioritise other important commitments. In the event, I have been proved wrong. Over the period of time, not only Atul ji has been keeping his interest in the Blog intact, but more guest writers have also joined the bandwagon making Atul ji’s posts appearing more as a ‘guest’ post while some of the guest writers have turned regular contributors on a voluntary basis. Furthermore, there is a phenomenal increase to the visitors of the Blog which is currently in the threshold of crossing 18 million in 18 years, that is, an average of one million a year.

To the best of my knowledge, I do not think that as on today, there is any other blog covering exclusively Hindi film and non-film songs which had discussed 20000 songs than our own Blog without a break (with some rare exceptions) for nearly 18 years. This achievement is more pronounced despite stiff competition from other social media platforms for the blogs in general. The Blog has now become like an encyclopaedia of Hindi films and its music, with biographies of many unknown artists, and with a wealth of statistical information which, to my mind, no other musical blogs catering to Hindi films possess. This is mainly due to the hard work done by Atul ji whom I consider to be a ‘Parthasarathi’ of our musical bandwagon under whose leadership the Blog has been progressing in a steady manner.

My hearty congratulations to Atul ji and his bandwagon for reaching a significant milestone of 20000 posts for a blog. This time, I am more optimistic than ever before that the Blog would attain its next important milestone of 25000 posts at a faster pace than that for reaching 20000 posts from 15000 which took nearly 7 years.

Continuing with my series on the semi-classical songs from the TV Serial, ‘Mahabharat’ (1988), I present the song, ‘pranay ke prathham prahar kee baat’ rendered by Anuradha Paudwal from Episode-41. This episode covers the story of Subhadra’s marriage with Arjun and his return to Indraprastha with her. The song is written by Pandit Narendra Sharma and is set to music by Rajkamal. The song is picturised as a background song on Aloka Mukherjee in the role of Subhadra.

The context of the song is that when Arjun elopes with Subhadra as planned, Balram gets furious. He orders his army to pursue Arjun. Krishna specifies Balram’s anger by pointing out that as per the security staff with her, it was Subhadra who eloped with Arjun by driving herself the chariot, which means that Subhadra was not happy with marrying Duryodhan. Krishna, therefore, suggests to Balram that instead of fighting with Arjun, his army should honourably bring Arjun and Subhadra to Dwarka for performing their marriage ceremony. With this, the tension is defused. Now, Subhadra is decked up as a bride and there is a celebratory atmosphere in Vasudev’s house for wedding. Subhadra garlands Arjun in the presence of her parents and brothers, Krishna and Balram among others. With ‘saptapadi’ completed, the marriage ceremony gets over.

The song plays in the background as Subhadra is waiting in her room for the arrival of Arjun (Feroz Khan) for their first meeting as husband and wife. Pandit Narendra Sharma has beautifully composed a love poem full of purity. Note as to how perfectly the poet has used the words, ‘vansh’ ‘ansh’ and ‘hans’ in the first line of the third stanza to add the lyrical quality of the poem beside giving a rhyming effect. In Hindi, it is called ‘Anupras Alankar’ (अनुप्रास अलंकार). As far as I know, I have never come across in any Hindi songs, a few Hindi words which have been used in this poem like ‘madhumaat’ (honey-sweet), ‘apalak’ (unblinking) and ‘paash’ (bond).

The song is based on Raag Yaman which is generally used in tender expression of love. The sitar recital and the melodious rendition of aalaaps by Anuradha Paudwal after each stanza give a soothing feeling. The song starts with antara tune and joins the mukhda of the song, ‘pranay ke prathham prahar kee baat’.

For Arjun, Subhadra’s elopement turned out to be an easy task. But he has now a difficult task ahead when he returns to Indraprastha with Subhadra to get her introduced to Draupadi.

Sadanand ji,

I entirely agree with your all statements about Atul ji and the Blog.

We are lucky to be in this team. We got a readymade platform to showcase our abilities in discussing old film songs, without any restrictions imposed by Atul ji at any stage.

From time to time there have been encouragements and help from Atul ji.

I wish the Blog all the best.
