Today’s song is a qawwali from a Bilingual film – Kalakar-1954.

This was a film made in 2 languages-Hindi and Marathi. The film was made by Datta Dharmadhikari, for his own banner Alhad Chitra, poona. (Alhad was his son’s name).

When talkie films started, it also prompted the Marathi producers to make films in Hindi and Marathi, in order to capture the bigger All India market and to make more money. The very first Marathi Talkie film ‘ Ayodhyecha Raja ‘-1932 was also made in Hindi as ‘ Ayodhya ka Raja ‘at the same time. So, in this game of Bilinguals Marathi films were ahead of Bengali films, whose first Bilingual came out much later.

Over a period, the regional markets grew so much that there was no need to make bilinguals anymore, for bigger Hindi markets. Slowly Bangla and marathi films stopped it, but the South Indian producers entered and presented their Hit films in Hindi remakes and dubbed films.

However, one director-producer Datta Dharmadhikari made 5 bilinguals in Hindi and Marathi, in the 1950’s decade. He even tried and made a film in 3 languages-Hindi, Marathi and English.. Mahatma-1953. However, the Hindi films were in its “Golden Era” making very entertaining and musical films and these bilinguals made by Datta did not fare well. he even introduced a successful marathi Director Anant Mane, to direct 2 of the 5 such films, without much success. Datta also brought up a new MD pair of Vasant- Ramchandra to compose Hindi songs.

Film Kalakar-1954 was directed by Anant mane and the music was by Vasant-Ramchandra. The cast of this film was Sheila Ramani, Raja Nene, Agha, Sunder, Raja Gosavi, dhumal and others. The 50’s decade was not suitable for average bilingual films.

The 50’s decade was called the Golden Era of HFM, not for nothing. Year after year, the films provided excellent songs, different film Genres, convincing stories, superb acting and Full Paisa Vasool Entertainment. In such a scenario an average music, beaten track stories, mediocre acting, poor direction and lustreless short lived songs had no chance of winning. Today’s film was one such film.

Just before this decade, the Genre of crime story films had already started being popular with films like Apradhi-1949 and Sangram-1950. In 1951 Baazi, in 1952 Jaal etc. continued this trend. The year of 1954 also began with Guru Dutt’s Aar Paar, with hit songs by O.P.Nayyar. Next was Taxi Driver from Navketan. It had foot tapping melodious songs.

Filmistan brought Nastik, which showed the change of a Nastik to being Aastik, Its songs were very good. Filmistan’s Naagin gave Hemant Kumar the necessary boost with hit songs. Minerva’s Mirza Ghalib showered good songs. It also won the President’s Gold Medal – the First for a Hindi film.

After Do Bigha Zameen-1953, Bimal Roy brought Naukari on the issue of unemployment. His other film was Biraj Bahu, an effective Tragedy film, based on Sharat Babu’s novel. Kamini Kaushal won her First and the only Filmfare award for Best Acting.

Film Amar from Mehboob Khan survived with good songs in spite of a weak story. Some films were made for children. Filmistan’s Jagriti, Munna- India’s second songless film from K.A.Abbas, Bimal Roy’s Baap Beti and H.S. Rawail’s Mastana were these films. All had good music too.

Satyen Bose made Parichay, Debki Bose’s last film in Bombay-Kavi Mohan Sehgal’s Aulad were followed by Shantaram’s Subah ka Tara- last film before Shantaram and jayashree were divorced. To save the sinking studio Bombay Talkies from bankruptcy, its employees made the film Baadbaan, in which all artistes, technicians and others worked free of charge. However Bombay Talkies had to be sold to Tolaram jalani. Today, its site in Malad is full of small Plastic factories.

Kala Maharshi Baburao Painter died in 1954. Dilip Kumar became a victim of depression, due to his continuous Tragedy films in which he always died in the end and had to seek psychiatric treatment. The year 1954 also saw some films being made in colour partially heralding fully coloured films in a few years later.

In such a situation, average films or average music had no chance to succeed in Hindi. As far as the new MD pair of Vasant-Ramchandra was concerned, they started in 1952 with the Hindi – Marathi film Nanhe Munne-1952. They went on to do They went on to do music for some more Hindi films, mostly remakes of Marathi films. However their work remained limited in Hindi films otherwise. Many people think that the pair of MDs- VASANT-RAMCHANDRA was made up by Vasant Desai and C.Ramchandra. But this is not true.

VASANT- RAMCHANDRA – this pair was of VASANT PAWAR AND RAMCHANDRA WADHAVKAR, both composers from the Marathi film world. Together they gave music to 5 Hindi films. Individually, Vasant Pawar gave music to 50 Marathi films and 8 Hindi films. Ramchandra Wadhavkar gave music to 5 Marathi and 5 Hindi films.

Famous director Datta Dharmadhikari gave break to this pair of Composers- Vasant-Ramchandra ( Vasant Pawar and Ramchandra Wadhavkar ) for 5 of his films in Hindi, but they could not get any work from other banners and their career in Hindi, as a pair, ended with these 5 films only.

Vasant Pawar ( 1927 to 6-8-1965) was from Kolhapur. He was professionally trained in Sitar. He was also proficient in playing Flute,Sarangi and harmonium etc. He was assistant to Khemchand Prakash in Ranjit. From 1946, he worked for Sudhir Phadke. He gave music ( under guidance of Sudhir Phadke) to film Jai Bhim-52, Earlier he had composed one song in film Do kaliyan-49,where his co-composer was P.Shankar. Finally, he composed music for Shivleela-52 (Bilingual in Hindi/Marathi). His music was extremely popular in Marathi films and also for NFS of Lata,Asha and many others. His Bhavgeets became very popular and were sung by leading Marathi singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Sudhir Phadke, Manik Verma, Sulochana Kadam and many others.Due to alcoholism,he died in 1965 at the young age of just 38 years.

Ramchandra Wadhavkar ( 1919 to 2-12-1972) started with Prabhat films in 1935 as a Harmonium player. He also played Organ and Sitar. Along with V Shantaram,he too left Prabhat and joined Rajkamal. For a few years he worked in a private company too and hence could not accept Shantaram’s offer for films twice. He joined Vasant Pawar in 1952 as a composer. He died in 1972.

Vasant Ramchandra gave music to 5 films.

1. Nanhe munne-52 ( Remake of Marathi film-Chimni Pakharen चिमणी पाखरें )

2.Mahatma-53 (Trilingual in Hindi, English and Marathi)

3.Suhagan-54 ( Remake of Marathi film Suvasini सुवासिनी )

4. Kalakaar-54

5.Savdhaan-54

All the above films were produced by Datta (Dada) Dharmadhikari, under the banner of his “Aalhad Chitra-Poona”. He also directed 3 films. Only Kalakaar and Suhagan were directed by his protege Anant Maane.

Anant Mane was a struggling Director in 1949, but due to hard work and of course with good luck, he became a very big and renowned director in Marathi cinema. His contribution in the Hindi cinema was of a minimal nature but his Marathi films were mostly Hit films.

Anant mane was born in a lower middle class family of kolhapur, on 22-9-1915. His uncle Gyanba Mane was working in Prabhat films as an actor (in his last days Gyanba was seen selling vegetables on the roads of Kolhapur, for survival). Anant used to go with him to Prabhat studio. The studio life attracted him. At the age of 15 years, he left school and joined Prabhat. he was given work in the Laboratory. First 2 years he worked without pay and then he got a salary of Rs.10 pm.

While in Prabhat he worked and learned a lot in editing, Artwork, Sound recording in addition to working as an extra in a Mob scene. He was impressed with Shantaram’s knowledge in the studio. When the film ” Sairandhri” was made, he was given Vishnu’s role in it.

His diligence impressed Shantaram and he was taken to the Editing laboratory. When Prabhat shifted to Poona, he too came with it and continued working in editing. He did editing of all Prabhat films till 1941. When Shantaram left Prabhat in 1942, he too left but joined as an assistant to director Raja nene till 1946. In 1949, he directed his first Hindi film ” Jai Bhim”-1949.

In 1950, Anant mane and Dada Dharmadhikari started ” Alhad Chitra”. Its very first Marathi film ” Bala jo jo re” became a hit and celebrated Silver jubilee. Their next two films ” Stree janma hi tuzi kahani” and ” Chimni Pakhare” also became Jubilee films. Chimni Pakhare was remade in Hindi as Nanhe Munne-1952. Anant mane directed 2 Hindi films in 1954-Kalakar and Suhagan, which were remakes of their Marathi films.

After this he concentrated only on Marathi cinema and became a well known and successful director of 58 Marathi films. He also wrote stories and screenplays of 14 films. He won many State and Central Government awards. He considered Shantaram as his Guru. Even after being so successful, he worked as an assistant director to Shantaram for his famous film ‘ Pinjara”-1972.

Anant Mane died on 5-10-1995.

Now, let us see what happened to Datta Dharmadhikari. Datta Dharmadhikari was born on 2-12-1913 at Kolhapur in a lower middle class family. He studied up to Matriculation and started working in various film studios of Kolhapur. He first worked with Baburao pendharkar and then joined Prabhat. He learnt from almost every department of film making, except the Music department. He even acted a small role in the film Sant Gyaneshwar -40, a bilingual in Marathi and Hindi. Having worked as an assistant director, he became an independent Director with the film ‘Shadi se pehle ‘-47. Simultaneously, he directed some very successful films in Marathi.

He established his own production company “Alhad Chitra”. Alhad ( means joy ) was his son, who worked as a child artiste in all his films- Hindi and Marathi.Datta re-made some of his successful Marathi films in Hindi, like Nanhe Munne-52 ( Chimni Pakhare in Marathi), Mahatma-53 in 3 Languages- Marathi, Hindi and English and Suhagan-54 ( Suwasini in Marathi ).

When he produced the film Mahatma-53 in Hindi and Marathi with an English version,he lost heavily and was forced to sell everything he had. Things were so bad that his wife had to cook Tiffins for people to run the house. However Datta came out of this all. He started accepting Directorial work from other producers, both in Marathi and Hindi. His last film was in 1982. Datta Dharmadhikari died on 30-12-1982.

He directed 21 Marathi and 11 Hindi films. His films in Hindi are Shadi se pehle-47, Maya Bazar-49, Nanhe Munne-52, Mahatma-53, Bhagyawan-53, Savdhan-54, Sudarshan Chakra-56, Deep jalta rahe-59, Subhadra Haran-64, Mujhe seene se laga lo-69 and last film Daulat ka Nasha-82. He gave break to a pair of Composers- Vasant-Ramchandra ( Vasant Pawar and Ramchandra Wadhavkar ) for 5 of his films in Hindi, but they could not get any work from other banners and their career in Hindi, as a pair, ended with these 5 films only.

Today’s song from this film is a qawali, sung by Khan Mastana and Balbir. Enjoy….
