‘Duniya Jhukti Hai’ (1960) was produced by Wadia Movietone and was directed by J B H Wadia. The cast included Sunil Dutt and Shyama in lead roles supported by Kumkum, Agha, B M Vyas, Sheila Vaz, Wasti, Uma Dutt, Bhagwan, Neelambai, Satya Rani, Dalpat, Kesar, W M Khan, M K Hasan, Madhu Apte, Damu Anna Malvankar etc. Probably, this was the only film in which Sunil Dutt was paired with Shyama in lead roles.

In my younger days, I had often heard a dialogue –दुनिया झुकती है, झुकाने वाला चाहिए। (The world bows, need someone to make the world bend). Probably, the inspiration of this dialogue was the song, ‘jhuktee hai duniya jhukaane waala chaahiye’ from the film ‘Sagaai’ (1951). After many decades, I have heard this dialogue afresh in the film under discussion when Sunil Dutt, who is in love with Shyama in the film is rejected by her father as a groom because he is poor. He says that the world bows to the rich for whom the money is power to make the world bend. Sunil Dutt takes a vow that one day he would become rich and with his money power, the whole world would bow to him. To achieve his objective, Sunil Dutt turns criminal.

The story of the film is as under:

Mohan (Sunil Dutt) is in love with Laxmi (Shyama), the daughter of a rich businessman. However, Laxmi’s father rejects Mohan as he is poor. Instead, he arranges Laxmi’s marriage with a rich man. Mohan turns a criminal which is a quick way to become a rich person. He takes a new name, Bankelal and works for his boss, Sethji (B M Vyas).

Bankelal spends most of his spare time with Balma (Kumkum), a courtesan with whom he shares his good and bad times including his marriage break-up. But he is not interested in developing a formal relationship with her. Whenever he remembers this incidence, he goes out of Balma’s house. During one of such occasions, Bankelal while driving his horse-cart, hears some commotion, He sees that a schoolboy is about to get drown in the lake. He saves the boy who introduces himself as Munna (Daisy Irani). The boy reveals him that the whereabouts of his father is not known and his fellow students in the school make fun of him. Just to please Munna, Bankelal introduces himself as his father and says that he would return home only after he completes his education and gets a job.

Munna and Bankelal meets almost every day and soon they develop affinity for each other. Initially, Laxmi is happy about their relationship without personally meeting him as this has made Munna happy and he does not enquire about his father’s whereabouts anymore. However, when she comes to know that Bankelal works for a criminal gang, she stops Munna meeting him. Neither Munna nor Bankelal is happy about this development.

Chandu (Agha), the man-Friday of Bankelal finds a way out. He manages to bring Munna in a marriage ceremony in which Bankelal will be present. Dring their meeting, Munna calls Bankelal as gunda which is not liked by him. Bankelal slaps Munna and scolds him. It is a shock for Munna. After he returns home, he falls ill with high temperature. Bankelal visits Laxmi’s house with a doctor but does not want to directly meet Munna as he still feel offended by Munna calling him a gunda in front of the marriage guests. Laxmi is shocked to know that Bankelal is none other than Mohan who was to marry her. So, she avoids meeting him directly. However, when Munna calls him in his subconscious state, Bankelal is forced to see him and Munna is happy to meet him. He takes promise from Bankelal that he would give up his criminal activities.

The next day, Bankelal surrenders at the police station. However, the police inspector does not want to arrest him. Instead, he tells Bankelal that to get access to his invisible boss Sethji, it is necessary that he is free so that he gets assignments for the criminal activities through whom he gets substantial collections.

Simultaneously, some other developments are getting revealed about Sethji, the invisible boss of Bankelal to whom only Bansilal (Wasti) has personal access. Sethji has presented himself as a philanthropist to the society. His recent contribution is the donation for setting up of an old age home. His palatial house has a front to depict as a normal household while it can be converted into his den for the criminal activities. [This reminds me of somewhat similar set-up in the film ‘Muqaabla’ (1942) which was also produced by Wadia Movietone with Babubhai Mistry as Art Director].

Sethji gets to know that Bankelal has given up his criminal activities because of his affinity toward Munna. Sethji gets Munna kidnapped to force Bankelal to continue to work for him. The news of Munna’s kidnapping reaches Bankelal and Laxmi. They separately rush to get Munna released from Sethji, Bankelal through his gang led by Chandu and Laxmi by pleading Sethji to release Munna.

A fight between the gang led by Bankelal and Sethji’s gang takes place. Sethji escapes to his den and Bankelal follows him. When the fight between Bankelal and Sethji is going on, Laxmi reaches the spot and stops Bankelal from killing Sethji as she reveals him that Sethji is her husband and Munna is their child. She also reveals that because of his nefarious activities, Laxmi had decided to leave separately from her husband. Taking advantage of the situation, Sethji tries to shoot Bankelal but police team reaches in time to shoot Sethji to his death before he shoots Bankelal. Munna is freed. Bankelal/Mohan is arrested by police for his past criminal activities. However, since he has helped police to nab the notorious criminal, Shethji, he gets a reduced imprisonment.

The film ends with Mohan getting released from the jail after serving his jail term. Mohan offers Laxmi that he is prepared to marry her and she agrees.

The film had eight songs written by Rajendra Krishan which were set to music by Hemant Kumar. Four songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 5th song, ‘kuchh is tarah wo mere paas aake baithhe hain’ which is written in the ghazal format. The song is rendered by Asha Bhosle and is picturised on Kumkum.

The context of the song is that after a fight with the gang members of opposite camp, Bankelal is on the run following the arrival of the police on the scene. The police team chases him but loses his trace when Bankelal enters Balma’s (Kumkum) house where her mujra dance performance is in progress. As the dance performance is about to end, the police also reaches the place to enquire about Bankelal from Balma and to search her house as they suspect that Bankelal has taken the shelter in her house.

Song-Kuchh is tarah wo mere paas aa ke baithhe hain (Duniya Jhukti Hai)(1960) Asha Bhonsle, Rajinder Krishan, Hemant Kumar

Lyrics (Based on Video Clip):

aa aa aa aaa
bulbul ke nasheman par
bijlee to giree lekin
haaye
kambakht ko girne kaa andaaz naheen aaya

kuchh is tarah wo mere paas aake baithhe hain
kuchh is tarah wo mere paas aake baithhe hain
ke jaise aag se daaman bachaa ke baithhe hain
ke jaise aag se daaman bachaa ke baithhe hain
kuchh is tarah wo mere paas aake baithhe hain

ye baar baar mere dil se aa rahee hai sadaa
ye baar baar mere dil se aa rahee hai sadaa
ke jaise wo
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
ke jaise wo meree mehfil mein aa ke baithhe hain
kuchh is tarah wo mere paas aa ke baithhe hain

kareeb unke huye thhe sazaa ye khoob milee
kareeb unke huye thhe sazaa ye khoob milee
ke saaree duniya se
aa aa aa aa
ke saaree duniya se ab door jaake baithhe hain
kuchh is tarah wo mere paas aake baithhe hain

ye jaante hain ke dushman hai aasmaan apnaa
ye jaante hain ke dushman hai aasmaan apnaa
magar duaa ke liye
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
magar duaa ke liye haathh uthhaa ke baithhe hain
kuchh is tarah wo mere paas aa ke baithhe hain
ke jaise aag se daaman bachaa ke baithhe hain
kuchh is tarah wo mere paas aake baithhe hain
