‘Jeet Hamaaree’ (1983) was produced by C. Dhandayuthapani (son of M M Chinappa Devar) under the banner of Devar Films and was directed by R Thyagarajan (son-in-law of M M Chinappa Devar). The cast included Rajanikanth, Anita Raj, Rakesh Roshan, Ranjita, Om Shivpuri, Padma Chavan, Satyen Kappu, Shakti Kapoor, Silk Smitha, Madan Puri, Jagdish Raj, Aruna Irani etc.

The film was a remake of Tamil film, ‘Thai Veedu’ (1983) with some variations probably to suit the Hindi speaking audience. Since both films starred Rajnikanth and Anita Raj with the same director, R. Thyagarajan with the same year of release (1983), probably both the films may have been shot, more or less, simultaneously with a short gap in post-production works for Hindi version. The film was an action drama.

I have watched the film recently and noted that it has all the ingredients of a typical ‘masala’ film. The story is on a familiar line of ‘lost and found’ son and the hidden treasure. The actions and fighting scenes are comical and stylist as one would expect from Rajnikanth’s unbelievable tricks. Being Devar’s film, it has also roles for trained animals – a dog with Rajnikanth and a horse with Rakesh Roshan. A major part of the film’s duration is devoted to fights, car and motorcycle chase etc which will be thrilling for the theatres’ front benchers. The film failed miserably at the box office while the Tamil version was a commercial success as per box office reports.

The story of the film is as under:

Thakur Vikram Singh (Om Shivpuri) stays in his palatial house with his wife, Nirmala (Padma Chavan) and his minor son and daughter. One day, Avtar Singh (Madan Puri), the smuggler of antiques, enters his house and tries to steal a priceless golden sword. However, Vikram Singh challenges him while stealing. In the panic, Avtar Singh picks up Vikram Singh’s son and escapes in his car. Later, he calls Vikram Singh and threatens him that his son will be killed if he does not handover the sword. Vikram Singh goes to deliver the sword in exchange for his son but he does not find Avtar Singh and his son. Actually, the son kidnapped by Avtar Singh is left inside his car which car thief, (Satyen Kappu) has stolen and driven with the son in the back seat.

The story goes fast forward. For the last 20 years, Vikram Singh has been participating in the exhibition of antique items displaying his sword with the expectation of Avtar Singh visiting the exhibition to pick up the sword but without any success. The thief who had stolen Avtar Singh’s car has brought up Mohan as Raju (Rajnikanth) as his own son. Both father (Satyen Kappu) and son run the business of stealing cars.

One day, Raju has stolen the Police Commissioner Saxena’s (Jagdish Raj) car. To celebrate the occasion, both father and son go to a club where Raju meets Vijay (Shakti Kapoor) who runs a smuggling business under Avtar Singh. After some initial confrontation, both joins hand and watch the dance by Anita (Anita Raj). After dancing with Anita, Raju develops liking for her and tells his father that he is going to marry her only.

Anita wants to learn swimming and just to woo her, Raju becomes her swimming instructor without having any experience in the field. Anita comes to know that Raju is a fraud. She slaps him and walks out. Feeling insulted, Raju’s father contracts Anita to give her dance performance on the occasion of his son’s birth day. However, when she comes to know that it was for the birthday celebration of Raju’s dog, she walks out. In his next attempt, Raju is successful in wooing Anita when Raju’s dog saves her from the ruffians. As a gratitude, Anita meets Raju and says sorry for insulting him and the dog. Anita and Raju fall in love with each other.

One day, Vikram Singh, after winning good amount at Vijay’s gambling den is waylaid by Vijay’s men. However. Inspector Anand (Rakesh Roshan), the son of the police commissioner, Saxena, who was riding his horse nearby, saves Vikram Singh. As a gratitude, Vikram Singh invites Anand to his house during which he introduces his daughter, Geeta (Ranjita) and reveals his tragedy of losing his son Mohan, and about the antique sword. Anand promises him that he will be with him whenever needed. He also promises Geeta that he will make her smile even though she has gone through the sad events. This makes Geeta and Anand to meet and to fall in love with each other.

After experiencing Raju’s heroic fights, Vijay takes Raju to Avtar Singh, the chief of the smuggling racket during which Avtar Singh assigns him to retrieve the golden sword from Vikram Singh. Raju accepts the assignment without knowing that the heir apparent son is going to steal the sword from his real father, Vikram Singh.

One day, Raju’s father is unwell and he reveals the reality to Raju as to how he has been his foster father. He had tried to locate his real father but he was not successful. So, he had brought him up. Raju says that he does not matter him. He wants him to become healthy as he has to watch his proposed marriage with Anita. On the other side, Vikram Singh has decided to get Geeta married to Anand.

One day, Raju and his father sees Avtar Singh getting down from his car. Raju’s father recognises him the person who was asking him to stop the car as he was driving his car after stealing. Raju meets Avtar Singh and introduces himself as his son. Avtar Singh recallz the incidence but seeing the opportunity to get the sword from Vikram Singh, immediately acknowledges Raju as his son. He creates a false story that it was Vikram Singh who had snatched his family sword and made him poor because of which he had do the shady business. Raju vows to him that he will try all his might to get the sword from Vikram Singh and if necessary he will not hesitate to kill Vikram Singh also.

The next about 40 minutes of the film is the various attempts made by Raju to retrieve the golden sword. On each occasion, Anand comes in his way to thwart his attempts. In these, Raju’s dog and Anand’s horse also play their roles. In his last attempt to retrieve the sword, Raju enters Vikram Singh’s house and put all servants as captives. He tells Geeta that he would wait for Viram Singh’s return and till then, he would stay in the house. Still Geeta does not know as to what is Raju’s motive to burgle her house.

Vikram Singh returns and Raju pounces upon him for making his ‘father’ poor by snatching from him the golden sword. Vikram Singh reveals the true position and apprises Raju that it is Avtar Singh who has stolen the one of the two swords of his family from the museum and was after the second sword lying with him through which he would have got the location of the secret treasure of the family. Raju slowly gets the missing links in the story told by his foster father and comes to know that he is not Raju but Mohan, the heir apparent of Vikram Singh. Thereafter, Raju in tandem with Anand fights Avtar Singh, Vijay and his cronies successfully and retrieves the swords for the family. Raju unites with his royal family and Anita but not before completing the minimum jail term for car thefts.

The film had five songs written by Indeevar (4) and Maya Govind (1) which were set to music by Bappi Lahiri. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘arre naach ke dikhaao mere yaar ko’ written by Indeevar and rendered by S P Balasubramaniam who sings for Rajnikanth. There is a female voice in-between.

The context of the song is that Anita (Anita Raj) is a dancer who give dance performances for a living. Raju’s (Rajnikanth) foster father (Satyen Kappu) books Anita for her dance performance on the occasion of his son’s birthday. When Anita reaches the venue, she is shocked to learn that it is their dog, Johny’s birthday being celebrated. She refuses to give the dance performance and walks out. On the way, Raju reminds her that she has accepted the advance and as such she will have to give her dance performance. Anita throws the amount of advance on his face and walks out. Raju follows her with his dog and starts singing the song. The lyrics of the song are self-explanatory. It is a fun song in which Raju calls his dog as his brother and and the dog is brother-in-law for her.
