Some films don’t attract audiences, they just flop. No filmmaker makes a film to loose his investments. They begin with a firm story in mind but incorrect promotion and/or word of mouth spread by the few who see it works against the fortunes of the film.
“My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves” that released on 11th January 2008 is one such film. The first thing that was touted about the film was the protagonist played by Nikhil Dwivedi was a Shahrukh Khan look-alike. Second, the title of the film itself was not something that would give an idea to moviegoers about the content of the film. All this was in the year 2007/2008.
Cut to 2026. I was googling to find out if there was any song that Amit Kumar had sung with Pawan Malhotra lip syncing. Why? Because 2nd July is the date of birth of Pawan Malhotra & 3rd July is the DOB of Amit Kumar. And, as is my habit, I tried to find a song and do a post highlighting the two artists.
Pawan Malhotra (DOB 2nd July 1958) was born in Delhi & graduated in arts from Hansraj College, Delhi University. His first hand experience in movies was as an assistant in costume department of ‘Gandhi’ (1982). Thereafter he was production assistant in ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ (1983), ‘Khamosh’ (1986) and ‘Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho!’ (1984) and television series ‘Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi’ (1984), before he got a role in Saeed Akhtar Mirza’s TV series on Doordarshan, ‘Nukkad’, where he played ‘Hari’ a hard-working cycle repair shop owner, which got him noticed. Pawan Malhotra’s debut in films came through Pankaj Parashar directed ‘Ab Aayega Mazaa’ (1984). Over the years he has worked with directors like Buddhadeb Dasgupta, Saeed Akhtar Mirza, Shyam Benegal, Deepa Mehta and Roland Joffé.
Pawan Malhotra has silently completed 42 years in the entertainment industry- being seen on OTT series, television & films in a variety of roles. There are songs in films that he has acted in but he has hardly lip-synced any song, even if he was present in the scene (atleast that is what I remember.)
“My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves” had Pawan Malhotra playing Sikander Bhai (on whom the story rests) & Nikhil Dwivedi (who made his debut in this film) played the title character. Sikander Bhai had a longer screen time as compared to Anthony. If I have to give the story of the film, it is based on Shakespeare’s ‘Julius Caesar’. Mukesh Tiwari played Maqsood & Dayashankar Pandey was Riyaz (on the lines of Cassius and Brutus). Mithun Chakravarthy, Anupam Kher, Amrita Rao, Lillette Dubey, etc played supporting characters. Priyanka Chopra & Anil Kapoor played themselves in cameo roles. Saurabh Shukla, Jaaved Sheikh, Manoj Pahwa were also there in the film.
The film had eight songs which had the voices of Sunidhi Chauhan, Krishnakumar Kunnath (as KK), Shaan, Amit Kumar and Remo Fernandes (as per the listings on myswar.com). Irshad Kamil & Sameer were the lyricists. Himesh Reshmmiya, Pritam Chakravarthy & Sachin-Jigar were the music composers of the eight songs in the album. Three of the songs have two versions each- the song ‘Ya Baba’ & ‘Tum Mile’ had remix versions and the song ‘Jaane maula Jaane khuda’ has two versions- in the voices of Remo Fernandes & Amit Kumar.
With this post we also wish the nephew of Ashok Kumar and Anoop Kumar- Amit Kumar- a very Happy Birthday. May he have a lots of Good Health and cheeer. May we keep getting to hear him on songs yet to be recorded & older songs yet to be discovered (like today’s song).
It is common knowledge that Amit Kumar was the son of our favourite singer Kishore Kumar & his first wife Ruma Guha Thakurtha. He is the loving older brother of Sumeet Kumar (Kishore Kumar’s son from his wife Leena Chandavarkar) who is around 30 years younger to him. He has been entertaining us since “Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein” (1964) as an actor & with his songs from “Badthi Ka Naam Dadhi” (1974). He has been singing and acting off-n-on; but he is more of a singer.
As a footnote, I would like to add that the film “My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves” is worth a view. I sat through it and found some good acting from the whole cast. Even if Nikhil Dwivedi was promoted as a Shahrukh Khan lookalike, he doesn’t ape SRK- not even in the opening scene where he is shown to be dreaming of a life as an actor. Pawan Malhotra and Anupam Kher don’t disappoint at all. The reason I sat through the film was to see the background for today’s song, where it fits into the film etc. Unfortunately, I was not able to locate it; maybe a case of ‘deleted from the version uploaded on YOUTUBE’.
